You guys use dyno oil? Hmm I use synthetic but a friend of mine who used to work at a Subaru dealership told me I should switch back to regular... I dunno. The manual says synthetic doesn't it?

I use Mobil 1 synthetic 5W30. Synthetic is impartant in a turbo because it doesn't coke. Do a search. This has been discussed quite a bit.

I wish I had the link to svtperformance.com writeup that some engineer had done. Basically he was blasting any of the snake oil additives out there, in the writeup he talked about oil's and the recomendation for application. Since the forum was targeted the 03 cobra there was some information we found useful. So the short version.

In tighter (new generation) clearence motors the thinner the oil is the more you flow thus increasing the cooling effect. The 03 cobra has an issue w/ cooling to one of the heads and the oil passaages being too narrow. Most new motors are calling for 5w20.

After reading through the article I switched to Mobil1 0W40. I've been running really hard on my 14-15psi cobra. I have 5w30-40 in the WRX for now. In my RX7 I have to run at least 20W50 because I have a high pressure oil pump. If I run anything thinner than that the oil control seal in the TO4B turbo start leaking and the car smokes really bad.

anyway, Mobil1 is the best oil you can buy at a store. but for a WRX running in the winter I would at least use 5W and maybe the 0W depending on how cold and where you are at.

Stay away from Penzoil. That oil is pretty much crap. I've heard bad things about castrol, although I've run it in the WRX for a while. I know the RX7 guys say it's the surest way to ruin a rotary.

Anyway, if you can afford it, get the royal puple, redline, amsoil. Those oil's are much better made. If you can't get those then get mobil1, if you want to change oil often and save a buck, then you can use 5w havoline or valvoline for a cheap cheap alternative.

not sure about synthetic, but regular has lots of wax in it. causes carbon buildup much quicker.

I didn't want to lose any low end. The next time I have to rebuild the motor I will though. Along w/ a bigger turbo. But I'm set, it's still fast enough. I have Microtech Lt8 EMS, nice turbo, and other goodies on a pretty light chasis. Should be ableto hit 11's no problem on a daily driven car. I'm in the middle of replacing the fuel rails and completely redoing the car now. The motor is new, only has about 25K on it. I just haven't driven it much the last 3-4 years.

i use mobile 1 in mine (stock for now), and i'll probably change it out around 5k (i drive it hard but not all the time). but i've also changed out the diff and trans to mobile 1 synthetic 85w90.

in my ex-import truck i changed to mobile 1 in the trans and diff and noticed when i touched the metal part of the stick-shift it was cool to the touch. before it transmitted quite a bit of heat, actually hot when driven for any length of time.

i know that a lot of people suggest neo synthetics for their trans and diff to shift into 1st gear at a higher speed. but, i've been able to shift into 1st at approx. 26mph (just letting it slide in/street driving conditions) without any problems.

(almost) any feedback is greatly appreciated.

For those that use Mobil 1 synthetic, how often to you go between oil changes? 3k or do you run it for 5k?

I would have to say that 15w50 is to thick for these engines and most new engines on the market. I would at most run 10w30 in these cars. It tends to be older gernerations that are still under the impression that thicker is better. Where i work i still have people coming in and wanting 15w40 in their new altimas.
