2 + 3 + 2 seating setup. 3rd row will have limited headroom.

Front row control setup is identical to 3 from the looks of it. I am ok with this.

To sum up where I am at now:

1) A Model Y Performance is definitely in my future. 3 rows sealed it for me-that's exactly the occasional-use kind of setup I'd like to have with my young kids.

They're saying Fall 2020 ship date, which would be awesome as Colorado's EV tax credit will be $4k that year, falling to $2.5k in 2021, 0 in 2022 and thereafter.

Edit: Per the configurator the 7 seat interior will ship in 2021. So lower tax credit. Also will mean I'll have a 3 of some sort for over 2 years! Heaven forbid.

2) Whether a Model 3 Performance is in my garage next week depends entirely on the CarMax appraisal tomorrow. $48.5k ($275/mo cost thus far inclusive of tax effect of the trade) is my minimum number.

If it comes up less than that then I stick with my LR AWD 3 and probably add on Full Self Driving for its discounted-through-Sunday-only price for ****s and giggles. FSD wouldn't add anything to my current Enhanced Autopilot until it's supposedly "feature complete" later this year, but I could get much of a year's use out of it and it'd help resale a bit, too.

If it comes up at that or more then I jump to a 3 Performance for the next year and a half.

I'm thinking blue for the Y***8230;

So realistically fall 2022 is when you'd actually get your taller 3rd row model 3 with a model x rear.

Sure, but who is really going to try and get seven adults into something smaller than a suburban/excursion? The model Y is aimed at the vast majority of people that need seven seats, those that have a couple kids and want to be able to bring a couple of their friends and those people are all midgets. It will be years before I need headroom in the third row, but I could use the extra horizontal but parking space with seat belts now.

I will either end up wit a Tesla LR Y in 2021 or, if at all competitively priced and VW ID Buzz VanEgan in 2022.

I think I should trademark VanEgan, it is descriptive and catchy and egan is yes in Hungarian and Finnish so there is that...

VanYes!

The 3rd row of a Suburban is actually quite terrible. I prefer the Chevy Traverse if I have a choice. I haven't been in an Expedition recently so I can't comment on that.

Let’s not forget the “I need dat performance trim to haul around my kids and their ****ty friends crowd.

I really wish I could be someone that found these cars appealing but they look so ****ing boring and relatively the same. It would be like BMW charging you out the ass for what looks like a base model 320i but under the hood is a M3 engine.

Boring and hard pass.

Good design is one thing. Honda of the early- mid 90's is good design. Simple, functional and stands the test of time. Tesla is just kinda meh. I appreciate the simplicity but it's just a bit off.

Can you even fit 2 car seats in the back?

Given Shik's scenario of carrying his kids and some extra adults. Im guessing adults go in the adults seats, not the neck breaking rear seats.

Ive been there, and Im not really tall (5,6).

Minivan is still where it's at for 7 (or 8, in case of my Odyssey) adult hauling, plus some room for luggage a little larger than fanny packs.

The 3 row SUV: Sure fit 7 people comfortably or not -so-comfortably, but you cannot pack anything behind the third seat. I looked at CX-9, and trunk space with 3rd row up is a joke. In the Odyssey, I can fit the whole family's beach gear, including chairs and 6 boogie board in the trunk well behind the 3rd row.

Meh.

It's really not about flair. I'm just not a vanilla shake type of guy who only does missionary.

The Y has been forecast in my plans for a while. Besides, as correctly noted, the 7 seater is claimed to ship early 2021 in Elon Time so who knows...

I don’t know what it is about the X I don’t like. But I know I don’t like it. I also like the 3/Y modern Spartan interior better.

The 3rd row would be occasional use. Kids in forward facing seats and later boosters there. This is because, as noted by tbert, minivans still are more useful. My wife will keep hers as the main people mover +/- updates to an electric Merc/VW/Chrysler when those come out.

Meh.

Agreed, but this isn’t to replace her PacHy. As an incremental improvement on my 3 I dig it. Equivalent range and performance, slightly higher h-point, likely even more headroom yet, a roomier second row for daily use, and an occasional use 3rd row. Bingo.

For that I’ll accept that it looks a bit puffy.

I'll probably put a deposit on Y just for ****s & giggles. Current EV lease is due in fall of 2021. If this thing actually lands on time, I'll just sell my spot to some shika tool for profit. If it lands in 2021 as I expect, I may or may not pull trigger. Will probably still sell spot to some tool.

I am a hatch person. I dislike sedans. So, yes. This could be good for a commuter occasional family transport car.

I'm rational to a pathetic fault. One day I'll probably do something dumb and buy one of these.

when I read the news this morning about the Model Y, I thought to myself, "I wonder if that shikatagani guy wants one..." soon as I saw this thread on top I knew it!

As a casual Tesla follower I liked the live stream. He's quirky and interesting to watch and I liked especially the part where he was talking superchargers and somebody mentioned Saskatchewan.

I'm having a Shik moment after seeing that a NY Jaguar dealership is offering the XF-Shooting brake for $25k off MSRP.

I'm relying on the wife to be responsible and not trade the recently procured Ford Focus on one instead of saving money. Because I freaking love wagons damnit, they're my kryptonite.
