Default truck thread... dont hurt me ;)

well I need money to pay for flight school and have been thinking of selling my civic si - It will almost pay for the rest of my commercial rotary training.

I know you can get trucks pretty cheap, and have always loved older toyotas and ford broncos (dont know why, always loved them as a kid).

So which older trucks are super dependable and reliable? ...yet badass at the same time? After buying a used miata that needed a new motor after a year of owning it and a new key cylinder I am a little scared of getting something old (bad prior maintainance).

I dont want to do this but I am so close to being done with school FINALLY that i cant believe its happening.

A solid axle Yota or first gen bronco would be kick ass. But neither will be trouble free unless they've been thuroughly worked over. A well restored Bronco will not be cheap but a well cared for solid axle Yota could be found at a reasonable price.

What are you talking about spending?

Im at my aggregiate loan limit, which means no more loans for school, oh and my school charges $200 an hour for the 300cbi. I have my private cert and my instrument rating both for rotorcraft.

Looking to spend around $2000, , doubt that will buy something in great shape but as long as its mechanically sound I dont mind something a little beat up. What price should I be aiming at?

What model toyota are you talking about with the solid axle? I see some on autotrader with the "sought after" motor, but not really sure which truck I am looking for.

Guess I could look at selling the bike but I dont know if it would be worth selling - it needs work and wouldnt sell for much at all.

Early 80's Yota's had the solid axle. It's really just more desirable for off roading. If I wanted to buy something for $2k that was going to be reliable I'd get the newest Honda I could find for the money.

I bought a 1989 Jeep cherokee about 2.5 years ago for $1000. Had to replace the rad and water pump and backflush the heater core, and a lil bondo work. Then I managed to blow up the electrical system using one of those plug in dash heaters. But if you dont include what I spent to repair the electrical I have about 1500 in to it since I bought it outside of oil changes and wear items. Ive put 32k miles on it. Runs like a top with 163k right now. Just the body is in rough shape...those cherokees like to rust

Mine is a fully loaded grand wagoneer with the 4hi 4lo and AWD options and the 4.0L, power everything, woodgrain.

A Toyota is going to be your best bet for reliability. You can do Solid axle swaps on them for decent prices, depending on the axle you want to use. Your $2000 spending cap may limit you here. Toyotas popularity keep them high priced here in my area.

I love my Full Size Bronco, but you can easily dump just as much money into it as you can any WRX or STi. Reliability is not something you are going to get when you buy a Bronco, it is something you are going to have to "gain" after building it. I got mine for $1k and have easily put $6k in it.

Next vote would be a Cherokee with the straight 6 and a 5 speed. The engines are dang near bullet proof and the manual would be easy to fix or replace. I see them all day long for $700 and up.

+1 on a Cherokee. I had one and never had any major issues. It was fun to drive and great in the snow. For a pickup I like the old Toyotas.

<---- The 80's pickups and 4runners are tanks. Make sure you get the 4cyl version, the 6ers are garbage. I picked up mine for $2k, crappy paint but a fresh motor and a sweet bumper. My friend has an '83 pickup with 500k miles on it. He just put his 3rd motor in it, original everything else. The ones closer to 1990 are independent front suspension with a solid axle rear like mine. If you don't plan on lifting it 12" and taking it on the rubicon IFS will be fine. Mine is more for snowboarding and light to medium trail use. The bugger start everytime on the first click and spins like a top. I have towed a loaded 12' u-haul trailer with it up 4000' in elevation. The yotas are givers.

This summer I'm going to paint her blue (original color) and have it look something like this:

I would also like to do this, but it may have to wait until I graduate

So you want to save money by selling your daily driver, but keep your motorcycle? In this process, instead of buying a late 80s/early 90s economy car like a old corolla or civic (which has a much higher probability of being trouble free), you want to buy an old truck?

If you're looking for a Bronco, try and find one with the 4.9L straight 6, rather than the 5.0 or 5.8L V8. The reason for this is the 4.9 is nearly as powerful, but it'll run forever. At the shop where I work we've got an old Ford E-250 with the 4.9L in it. That engine hasn't gotten warm in something like 5 years, as the van it's in hasn't been street-legal since August of 2003 (all we use it for is shuttling tires and trashcans from the shop out to the bins out back), and the water pump has been leaking almost as long. It still fires up every day as long as there's gas in the tank. I can't think of any other engine that can take that kind of abuse and still keep going day after day.

This. I have owned about 10 XJ's and they ar the most reliable vehicle I have ever seen. 200-300K is the norm for these. They are also great in the snow and off road and have pretty decent interior space for how small they are outside.

In fact, I like them so much that when the woman's Rodeo blew its trans, we junked it and bought her a 1995 XJ with 100K on it for $3K. All I really did was replace all the fluids and do a cooling system overhaul (rad, water pump, hoses, fan clutch, therm) replace the serp belt, and it's been dead reliable for the last 2 years. It now has about 130K on it and still runs like a top. I have no doubt it will see 200K before we're done with it, and at that point we could still probably get a thousand bucks for it.

Here's one of my old ones (I paid $1500 for this one with about 110K on it):

And hers:

One big caveat to these things: Fully inspect the floors from the underside, on both sides. This is a big issue with these, they rot to hell. Especially over the muffler/cat. I had to replace all the floors in my white one above due to holes and rust that I never saw when I bought it.

Yes the 4.9 in the Bronco will go forever and they produce some good torque.

My 5.0 however had 155k on it when I pulled it apart and it look brand new still on the inside. I got lucky with the previous owner taking care of it.

If the xj rear main leaks enough itll save the floor pans...atleast mine is that way...Its about a quart every 3k miles.

The rear corners, the pieces under the doors and the part infront of the rear wheel wells seem to like to rust too

Either way...get under it and check every piece u can for rust...prod and hit **** and check for holes/bondo

True. Bathing the entire undercarriage in oil helps.

Bring a screwdriver with you and see if you can push it through any part of the underside.

If you see rust on the rockers though, just stay away. The whole floor is probably gone already.

Thanks! I was just renting there. I had the whole first floor though...the place was so freaking big I had to move my pool table in just to take up space.

Plus it was 8 blocks away from the beach FTW.

I have since moved up into the woods/mountains into what is basically a trailer, but at least I own it

This thing has treated me quite well. Ranger's, anthough not bulletproof, are incredibly reliable an tough. I've no problems at all with this to date, it has very low miles, and I only have $1765 invested in it(and that includes the wheels and tires I just bought).

I could probably get 9k-10k for my car - and if I sold my bike 2k if I am lucky (low sided and laid down in parking lots a few times). It gets good gas mileage so I am not sure why I would want to sell it, it would just not be worth it. I would have enough money after getting a cheap vehicle to pay for 80-90% of he flight fees I would need to get my commercial ticket.

testify - what year ranger is that?

I'm selling a 98 Toyota 4Runner but I'm asking more than what you're looking to spend. But it is a rock.. runs great.

Oh and I'm in Nashville so I could bring it to you in GA

i'd also vote xj.

I've had a bunch of them, from mild ( 31s) to wild ( 38.5s, axle swapped, lt1 swapped, etc etc).

you'll be hard pressed to kill the motor.

hell i even drove one around for a month that i had to smack with a hammer to start. but every time i smacked the starter with a hammer, it started.

only time i've ever been left stranded by an xj was when the fuel pump went, it cost me 53 bucks to get her running again.

yotas are cool and all, but you'll be more tempted to spend frivolous dough on em. i know, i have 2.
