So I think I solved my issue.

I thougt for sure I had my crossovers set for, 60, 80 and 140 on my Center, Main / surrounds and Atmos.

Turns out that the large speaker setting overrides that.

Set them to small and it's so much better balanced.

B&W have some pretty wonkey measurements these days. It is surely deliberate, but wouldn't spend my hard earned dollar bux on a pair.

JFC.

Ok, #1, there is more to this whole thing than measurements. I'm an engineer so I like the numbers as a basis of comparison but much of a loudspeaker is perception... As an example, the studio monitors in my office are pretty damn flat (as is theoretically required to master music) but left to their own devices aren't very pleasant to listen to for most sources. Gotta be EQ'd to be pleasant.

This is one of the reasons why I never buy speakers off the internet and why I always buy from places with great return policies. Sort of analagous to the PDK/DualClutch vs Manual argument, the automatic is faster, the manual is more engaging. Neither is right or wrong, it is all about goals.

That being said, I liked the B&Ws in the room I demo'd them and when driven by a decent amp with good power. Might sound like horse**** powered by my AVR and in my living room where I can't **** around with placement (which was why I went with the dipole Deftech speakers in the first place, btw, for the wide but arguably imprecise soundstage.) For circa $5k I'm going to need to be in love with them, in my home.

I'm still drooling over the way they presented cymbals and snares in what I listened to during the demo but bottom-end was sorely lacking. That being said, I already have a great $2k+ sub.

I should add one more thing, in the comments from the B&W review, someone mentions that Monitor Audio Silver300s were in the same review batch and out of what the dude reviewed he liked the Silver 300s the best. This is convenient because one of my best friends is a MA distributor and I can get them at cost. This bears consideration.

Ok, some help needed.

My PSW300 has always had a "rattling" issue. I finally got the courage to take it apart and it seems as if the entire woofer needs to be replaced.

So to that effect I got this

https://www.parts-express.com/dayton...oofer--295-486

I presume this should be ok?

I may or may not keep this - i.e I may just sell it, so not sure I wanted to invest more into a nicer woofer.

while that might work, it might not be ideal since box volumes and such really ought to be tuned to the QE values of a given driver.

You can't Eq poor dispersion characteristics out of a loudspeaker. On axis flat is straightforward. A non level matched listening sighted listening session is full of flaws as an evaluation technique.

There is a lot of data published that show the statistical majority will find well measuring loudspeakers to sound better. I am fully on board with buying what you like and trusting your ears to some degree, but "decent measurements" are prerequisite for me. Measurements arnt everything perhaps, but they certainly arnt nothing.

I'm an engineer as well. Just passing on the info that from an engineering perspective many products are superior to B&W current offerings. Buy what you like of course.

bro hug.
The MA gold 300s look stunning and measure well. I think wholesale will be half of retail so would be a smoking bargain if you can audition them and like them.

The wholesale price of the upper end Dynaudios is a bit less than half of retail. Some disgruntled dealer posted the sheet on AVS as revenge porn I guess lols

I got impatient and went to my local costco to get the Klipsch S12. Ok - this sounds great. I am very happy for $163. Even the wife thinks we've got an entirely new sound system.

I'll likely just repair the PSW300 and see if I can convince the wife to let me run dual SWs.

That’s what I was trying to convey. Large is full range, small is crossed. Glad you got it tweaked for better sound!

Extremely!

I'm facepalming myself on this one since I had done this once before and thought I had resolved it.

They really should change the terminology on this.

Reminder for those using Plex to check your video settings. Mine were set to lower resolution. Notice colors were off when watching a 4K copy of The Boys went into settings to see that I wasn't using the highest setting when streaming media. Made a big difference.

Good choice. I like the ease of being wireless as an added bonus.

Or the Polk MagniFi mini.
I have the prior generation of that Yamaha sound bar down in the basement and I've been happy with it. I also have it paired wirelessly, with a sub I built in 1995 (but have since upgraded) and it is a pretty good sound for what I need (take up little space).

so I'm still up in arms about this...

Big gap in price between the MA Silver 500 and Gold 300 (Gold 300 is more than 2x the cost of Silver 500.) And given Covid + MA being a smaller company means it is unlikely I can demo them side by side. Even with my buddy giving me steep discounts, the Gold 300 is still a bit more than my budget for this year.

I could do Silver 500s AND a stereo amp for the cost of the Gold 300s which at the end of the day will probably do better than the Gold 300s being driven off my AVR (even though my Anthem MRX720 has some of the best amplification out there for 5 out of 7 channels...) Of course splurging for the Gold 300s now and buying an amp later would be better still.

*sigh*
