So here's an idle question - we have ceiling-mounted speakers downstairs. The sound seems to quite readily pass through the ceiling into the bedrooms upstairs. Is there some sort of baffling we can put behind the speakers to limit the amount of sound transfer?

Thanks!

EDIT: also YamahaSHO, those look awesome! Great job!

You can build or buy pre-made backer boxes.

You can also use rockwool or acoustic batting between the speaker (or the backer box) and the floor.

I've had a couple of days now with the new SVS Ultras and Prime Satellites in my little living room that are replacing the Hsu Research Bookshelves all around.

My initial impressions are mixed. It's definitely not as "warm" as the 5.1 all-Satellite system in my office, but I'm not surprised. That's a much smaller space, and the walls are cork-lined. This larger set is much brighter, but not quite to a fault. Really though, I'm comparing these against the Hsu speakers.

The old setup sounded great, but they took up a lot of space in the small room (especially the surrounds), and after a decade of listening to them, I was interested in hearing something different. I got that. Whereas the Hsu's had an effortless airy presentation, the Ultras sound more authoritive. Bright, yes, but they also add something I never thought the Hsu's did well; mid-bass.

I've demoed a bunch of my favorite stereo and multi-channel content so far. Instantly noticeable was the smaller sound of the Satellites as my sides and surrounds vs the bookshelves. A necessary evil. Crossed at 90hz, though, they don't sound bad by any measure. Dark Side of the Moon on 5.1 SACD was still a treat. The front channels are, I think, an improvement. I'm still getting used to the additional mid-bass and the sound of the 3-way center and aluminum dome tweeters over the horns on the Hsu's. I like what I'm hearing. It's definitely different.

Are these SVS speakers worth the cost over the speakers they replaced? Hmmm. I'd lean towards no. The Hsu Research HB-1 and HC-1 speakers are a tremendous value with a very listenable sound (when paired with a sub). I think these SVS speakers are more capable, for sure, but not twice-the-price capable. I'm not mad that I spent the money. These certainly fit my needs and space better. I have 45 days to evaluate these. SVS pays shipping both ways if you order and don't like them. Tough to say whether or not I'll keep them at this point, but so far I'm leaning towards "yes". Looking forward to more critical listening.

Reflax thanks for posting up your thoughts. It should be helpful for others in the future.

I am extremely jelly to think about listening to Dark Side of the Moon on 5.1 SACD on your system however.

Once they break in they may warm up a bit more for you. At least they look nice in your space.

Is amazon the way to go for a new TV in the 70in range? I was sorta worried about such a big box and delivery, but I hadn't really looked into it. Otherwise I have to remove the seats from the wifes minivan and head to costco.

Not really sure what to get want to keep in the $1000 range, but I don't care all that much about video quality. Anything will surely be an upgrade over our current TV which was purchased on a whim at a Walmart isle sale 6 years ago.

In audio news, got a Bluesound Node 2i for music streaming. So far app and general glitchyness seems much improved vs using my oppo 103.

I'd buy local, personally. Makes exchanges easier.

They might, yeah. They aren't really tiresome or sibilant. Just a hair more sharp than I'm used to. I agree. They do look nice. The Hsus they replaced were pretty monolithic.

I purchased a 55" TV via Amazon and it showed up broken. I would try to go with Best Buy or something with their own delivery folks. Then you can make sure everything is in one piece before accepting the item. Newer TV's seem fragile enough I would not want to transport them flat for an distance. Or does a 70" set fit upright in the van?

Put it in the minivan gets my vote, unless Amazon has a screaming deal.
Also shop Target (5% redcard discount), I got my LG there on sale plus discount because it was a year old model near the calendar change.

$1000, 70" range... I'd recommend a TCL 6 series or higher(Roku not Android version). Costco randomly has them in stock, otherwise BB may be your best bet. Have to agree with RA that buying locally is probably best for returns, warranty issues..

Great PQ for the price, highly rated as one of the best value 4k Tvs. Only issues ime are if you like to use your HT while streaming movies.. Sometimes the audio is out of sync with the video. Prompting a power cycle of the TV to get it back in line. If you only plan on using the internal speakers you probably won't have much of an issue. I think updates have mostly resolved this issue?? As I can't recall the last time I had to do this.

Yeah probably not night/day difference, but once everything loosens up they may provide a bit more lower end for you. That brighter high end won't go away tho. My Paradigm's and their aluminum dome tweeter are just as forward today as they were 18 years ago when I bought them. Not fatiguing to listen to though as I prefer things a little "bright". But it's all personal preference.

I had to get my 940E from Amazon when I bought it because BB had zero left even though their website said they did. The trick with Amazon is to read reviews of your particular panel. See who the shipper/seller is. I was concerned, but read reviews of the shipper the seller used, and reviews were excellent. I went ahead with it, was real worried. Then it shows up, and the box is more pristine than other panels I've bought for the house from BB where I had it delivered.

If you really want to do it right, BB, in person, and cherry pick the box. I've done that too pre-C19.

And get the TV from costco. They have free extra warranty right?

I got my 65" Sony from Amazon. That TV shipped from CA to MA
Made it fine. It was delivered by a special van with two guys though, not the regular single delivery people.

I bought a Sony 900H from amazon since Costco was sold out and it came Ok. Not sure if I like it but for less than $1k, it is OK.

There use to be a time where I would spend weeks researching and waiting for the perfect deal. Today I just walked into BB and picked out the best looking one I could afford

Ended up with a LG 81 series 55in

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/lg-55-c...?skuId=6406539

There's an openbox 90 series that would be ~$190 more, hmmm

I ended up ordering a 75" samsung q90t from buydig. Took about 2 weeks for delivery. You have to call them for tracking details, but they were helpful.

not Tv's but it was funny back in the day i worked at officemax and them office depot and people would buy desk sets and shelves , etc...they'd come in these big heavy boxes 6 or 7 feet long and 150 pounds or so... we'd cart them out to their cars and it was like "oh, yeah, this will fit in your corolla...."

I worked at Best Buy during college. Back when the majority of TVs weren’t flatscreens.

We’d have to cram a big tv into the back seat of a car so often it was nuts.

The worst was those big Sony XBR’s, I think the 36” weighed like 220# or something.

Found these boxes that are less expensive as the Dynamat ones. Ordered through their store on Amazon for the return policy but they are on backorder.
