Been reading up, so I'm confident in just using the Bushnell 6-18 at first and either returning it, or handing it off to something else when I upgrade. Or should I skip it and just get the low end Vortex Crossfire II? It's only a few bucks more. Having no experience above 10x, I don't know what I'm getting into anyway. Is 6-18 enough? to 25x, or 30x+ ?

I have only used a Simmons 3-9x50 that I got like 4 or 5 on sale for $30 each. Seems to be a great bang for the buck n00b scope. I'm sure *anything* from a good manufacturer will be stellar compared to what I'm used to.

Vortex has entirely too many model lines, good lord. Nightforce seems to be better, with only a few in my price range anyway.

I haven't read bad things about Bushnell and Leupold either. I was surprised to find Brownells has their own as well. Should I really just focus on a Vortex or Nightforce?

I don't think I'll be too particular about what the reticle actually looks like, but perhaps I should investigate that. There's gotta be a ton of images/videos demonstrating how they all look.

Found a few training groups in the Bay Area, more than I was expecting really. A couple in the south bay that do precision rifle classes and have access to 3/5/7/1k spots at a few different sites. Sounds hella fun. There's another right by me in Brentwood, so they must have some private land.

Some basics:

Budget has grown I guess. I'm not opposed to something $500 or $700 if it's quality (like the Vortex Diamondback Tactical for 500?), but without the bells & whistles I don't need. Seems like I'll probably end up in the 1000-1300 range though. Vortex PST Gen II, Nightforce SHV. Even buying a rifle over 1k was really hard to do, if that helps. I can't afford/justify 2500+ for the glass....yet.

100yd is gonna remain my most common range, but there's several 200 nearby, and at one particular spot I like has a 300 and a private 1000. I figure if I really enjoy going over 100 I'll find some nearby clubs.

-Daytime only with good light, both covered and open
-Good weather
-No hunting, target only
-Not competitive, I just don't like investing time without good tools/equipment
-Don't know if MOA or MIL would be better. Seems like MOA for now
-FFP sounds like a nice feature
-Is HD noticibly more clear at 100-300yd?
-I have thick corrective lenses (I'm like 20/400), corrected to at best 20/30 with astigmatism, in case that affects anything
i have a vortex viper pst gen 2 5-25x on that rifle. if you are just bench shooting and not hunting with it, you want the most magnification you can get. the only downside to high magnification is the eye relief gets narrow, especially on lower priced scopes. ffp is usually more expensive and the only advantage is they are easier to do ranging with. i personally don't care for them as the reticle gets bigger as you turn the magnification up. before this pst i tried a viper hst and the clarity wasn't great. the pst gen 2 is vastly improved. i think it's as good or better than a gen 1 razor.

id suggest trying the make an offer for $800 and see where they end up. you should be able to get one for $850. i don't think you are going to find a better scope for the money.

https://www.scopelist.com/Vortex-Vip...ls-05-Nov-2020

if you need a scope mount, i have a gg&g that is collecting dust. i loctited the screws and a couple thread inserts came out when i removed the screws. gg&g will replace the inserts for free if you send it in. $50 shipped.

Awesome info, thank you! WTF is that scopelist, is that a brand new item with warranty? If so I'd just buy it right now, not really try to haggle it's already way below retail.

I'm building an excel sheet with a ton of info, figure I'll share it later for any other noobs.

yes, brand new with a warranty. they are a big reputable retailer. they usually knock $50+ off if you make an offer.

Just curious, but is there any reason someone would be asking $1,900 for a used Glock 41? This is the description of the ad:

$1,900, including PP GS fee and shipping from local Federal Firearms Dealer to yours

OFFERS ARE WELCOME

This is the M.O.S. ready model with tritium / fiber optic Truglo Pro sights (originals will be included separately) and installed TLR-6 Streamlight. No other mods have been made to it.

Has less than 1000 rounds through it. Will come with original case, paperwork from Glock, cleaning rod and barrel scrubber, 3 mags, Hornady self defense ammo, right side, OWB carry kydex holster and two mag holster.

Happy to discuss further details.

Probably just scalping. People are really looney. I’ve sold a few things, components mainly, because the offers/WTB ads were stupid money.

depending on the area, many guns are selling for good money these days. i sold my fn 509 tactical for $900 a couple weeks ago, but nobody is going to pay $1,000+ for a g41.

Ordered myself some 5.56 ammo recently. Also took the plunge of giving my AR-15 a 14.5" barrel with a pinned/welded Surefire SF3P Flash Hider. Bought a barrel and flash hider and going to be taking them to a gunsmith when they arrive at my door.

I'm debating on swapping out the handguard with something modern. Also I need to find/order 2 Surefire Wardens.

Learned a bit more about ammo today after picking up a shipment of 5 different makes/models of 6.5 Creedmoor.

Didn't know about the various tips and designs, but can't be too picky nowadays.

Winchester 125gr Open Tip, Select Grade
Remington 140gr Core-Lokt
Sellier & Bellot 140gr Tactical
Hornady American Whitetail 129gr, InterLock
Federal 95gr V-Max, Polymer Tip

Any of these gonna blow my face off?

No but none of those are match grade. The S&B is closest, but still bulk ammo.

nope, all reputable manufacturers. my tikka 6.5 seems to like the heavier stuff better. all of the federal gold metal match stuff and hornady eld match should shoot about the best for common factory ammo.

Thanks for the help! Yeah the S&B seems to be really popular and that's just what the shop happened to have on hand (good price, too, cheaper than all the others). Limit 2 boxes. I'll be back tomorrow for 2 more, if there's any left!

The other 4 were just one box each of what the online seller had. Going to be breaking the rifle in, zeroing the scope, etc, so I'm not concerned about it. The weekend after Thanksgiving I plan for a nice long day at a favorite range that goes up to 300.

Unrelated: Anybody have kids that participate(ed) in junior small bore rifle leagues? Sounds pretty fun for a 13yo boy man-child.

T3x superlite in 6.5 loved the 129 Nosler hunting loads. three shot groups at 100 can be covered with a quarter so far in all zero checks. Need to find a lead free load for it.

I know this already got solved, but putting meh glass on a rifle while you learn to trust it isn't a bad idea. I've got a redfield 3-15 that I use for this purpose...just fine out to 300ish.
I do put vortex razor light hunters on the rifles I'm going to use. The HSR reticle is really intuitive for me, just need to remember to crank up to max if shooting over 300. Getting harder to find but excellent glass for the minimalists out there.

Got to put a few rounds through different rifles last month. Forgot what kind of fun/kick a large bore iron sight can be to shoot. Putting a few shots through a 45-70 saddle gun leaves an impression. I was happy to be able to get it on the target consistently at 100yds.

You’re sitting on a gold mine, bud.

I bought some Magtech 9mm for ~.30/round. Just a little while ago I saw it for (I think) $40 for 50? Can’t even find the lacquered steel **** ammo anymore and when you can it’s way pricier than it should be. I wouldn’t buy it anyway, I’m a snob like that. Just saying.

Got bored a few months ago and found myself searching for AR Lowers. Found two for $80, so I of course got them, and started an AR build. This is my first AR, and finished it a little while ago. I don't have a good place to shoot it, so I still haven't had a chance to go and sight it in. Once prices and availability of parts gets sane again, the other lower will be turned into a pistol.

Semi related, a "friend" (using that to avoid the long explanation) and his father in law are apparently about to invest over 8 grand in reloading equipment and some bulk brass. I feel this should be interesting.

I guess I should say "some" bulk brass is a 55 gal drum worth. Which I've shopped and seen to be from $3-4k grand by itself depending on quality and calibers .

Yeah I sold 2K .223 and 1.6K 9mm. Could have asked for more, but honestly being under market and helping folks stay shooting while still profiting is fine with me.
