I live in MA, have a LTC but don't own a gun(yet). I originally wanted a polymer 9mm and shot a P320, VP9 and a MP2.0. Out of those I really liked the VP9, felt good and has an accessory rail.

Then I realized I don't actually need a gun at all and it would be more of a hobby to go shooting sometimes so I rented a 1911(Kimber) and now I want a 1911. I only want one gun, so I am willing to not cheap out to an extent. I really want a Dan Wesson but they are not Mass compliant so the only way I can get one is used.

The question I am asking is if it's worth waiting or should I just pick up a decent Springfield or something along those lines instead? Wilson Combat, STI...etc are more than I want to spend.

springfield makes a very good 1911. id stay away from kimber, sig, rock island, para, taurus, remington, and many others.

I was looking at the Springfield Hellcat, and the optics ready model made me curious. Do those pistol red dots have an on switch you have to hit in the heat of the moment, or do they automatically turn on when drawn?

depends on the optic. most micro red dots that fit the hellcat are constant on or turn on with motion. the holosun 407k and 507k are about the best option that will co-witness with the stock sights and the rmr cc is the best option if you don't mind it sitting above the sights. the shield optics springfield sells are fragile. if you are thinking of going that route, snap up a gen 1 507k before they are gone. the gen 2 is not an upgrade. they only went to a gen 2 because trijicon sued them over the button placement.

https://www.opticsplanet.com/holosun...dot-sight.html

i just picked up an osp hellcat today and have a holosun 507 k on order. i bought a rmr cc before i realized it isn't a direct bolt on and requires an adapter that makes it sit above the sights. with a micro red dot, i want it to co-witness. i'll sell the rmr cc or return it.

Do the constant on models vary brightness to preserve battery life?

Where are y'all buying 9mm ammo. I've looked at a couple of sites and they're all sold out. It's very frustrating.
I'm late to the game on this..

Is that a 2 or a 3?I picked up a G2C in April. I had been wanting to buy my first gun when a friend got one. She told me the store was pretty bare and they were limiting ammo to 5 boxes. I went in and picked out the G2c but they had no ammo in house any more. I wound up buying 2 boxes from her as she's never even fired hers. Joined a local range that always had ammo. They eventually stopped letting members walk in and buy, range use only. With going back to work I didn't have a lot of time to shoot so I canceled my membership. Literally my last day at the range they asked me to leave my empty boxes to make sure I shot it all. So right now I have 13 loaded, 12 in a back up mag and maybe 20 in a box.

Another local gun dealer does have some 9mm, but they're selling it for over $1/round.

yes, some are automatic adjustment, others you can lock on 1 brightness setting. the battery will typically last up to 2 years on a constant on optic.

not a great price, but it's decent for the current market and in stock.

It's the G2C. I looked at the 3 but went with this because the gun shop had 1 left in stock and I knew that was the one my wife wanted.

I just checked, I have 13, 12 and 22 left in the box. I think I can wait until the shops get caught up.

The 3 looks nice, but I'm still happy with the 2. I've got about 700 rounds thru it and it has yet to mess up. I'm glad I compared old vs new Taurus reviews.

I did a thing.

Tikka T3x TACT A1 in 6.5

Entry level quality scope? All I've used was 30-50 dollar 4-10x40

Bushnell Dusk n Dawn 6-18x50

I've been having too much fun with the 22 at 100yd now, and wanted to go to 300. Ticks the "sniper rifle" category as well.

Last one on the list is a DE, but my local CA ranges don't allow pistol calibers into the 400s.

Are you sad you can't try to shoot .22 into the 300-400 range?

You can, it's just more math and frustration.

I've had a scope on my .22 from when I got it a long time ago (like 25+ years ago). It isn't bad ,but I'm wondering if it would make sense to make a small update like this with the optics. It's my plinker and muskrat gun.

Get a Vortex PST II of some kind. They’re Philippines made, but decent.

That scope is a joke, right? Please tell me you're joking. If I just bought that rifle I would spend $2k on a Vortex Razor 2 or a Nightforce. I would spend time on snipershide, the optics board, and start doing research. There are plenty of threads on "what scope should I get". There are often good deals to be had in the optics for sale thread if you are comfortable with that. Another option if your budget is tight would be to check out SWFA. I believe they normally have a black friday sale. Their scopes are made in Japan and are extremely rugged from what I have read (never owned one). Their reticles are love/hate and they do not come with zero stop, and some do not have illumination, but for the money they are a good option. At the very least I would look for something not made in China, does not have capped elevation and windage, has zero stop and illumination (your choice). Start figuring out if want Mil or Moa. Not sure of your budget, but if you bought a $1600 rifle you should be able to get a decent scope. If I were you, I would spend $1k on a used Razor Gen 1 5-20 or $1350 on a Razor Gen 2 3-18. The Vortex PST line is a step down from the Razor, but I think they are pretty decent.

I presumed a Razor wasn’t in the budget, but $1400-1600 gets you into a new Razor Gen2.

Thanks for the input, the scope I grabbed was really just something to put on it for now that is a bit better than what I have already. I don't know anything about optics, wish I had read up earlier after going to a swap meet and it being filled with glass, I'm sure there were plenty of dusty gems.

Gonna check out snipershide, thanks.

Good luck. I wasn't trying to be an ahole, it's just you have a fantastic rifle and it is a crime to put a garbage scope on it. You will learn a lot by reading the hide forums. Don't forget about training. There is a board there that covers training, both online and classes at the range (in your area).

Nope, you were right and I needed that kinda kick, lol. Or a heavy eyebrow raise. I figure it's a lot easier to upgrade the scope later as time goes on. Did a lot of research into the rifle (well, type of rifle I suppose) though, and kept upselling myself.

Anyone have a Springfield 10mm XD(M)? I am looking for something for backcountry hiking or whatever. Also sketchy people on forest service roads. I really like the Springfield safety, and like shooting the XD(M) When I was in Detroit, I was looking at the 3.3" 45 S&W, but things happened to that purchase. Now it's an actual jungle, and I want to be able to hit something. And make a boom.

Also, I was looking at the competition model, but it is unavailable. I think I would enjoy competition type shooting.

Default Thanks for the help!

n2o what is the scope in your pic?

Been reading up, so I'm confident in just using the Bushnell 6-18 at first and either returning it, or handing it off to something else when I upgrade. Or should I skip it and just get the low end Vortex Crossfire II? It's only a few bucks more. Having no experience above 10x, I don't know what I'm getting into anyway. Is 6-18 enough? to 25x, or 30x+ ?

I have only used a Simmons 3-9x50 that I got like 4 or 5 on sale for $30 each. Seems to be a great bang for the buck n00b scope. I'm sure *anything* from a good manufacturer will be stellar compared to what I'm used to.

Vortex has entirely too many model lines, good lord. Nightforce seems to be better, with only a few in my price range anyway.

I haven't read bad things about Bushnell and Leupold either. I was surprised to find Brownells has their own as well. Should I really just focus on a Vortex or Nightforce?

I don't think I'll be too particular about what the reticle actually looks like, but perhaps I should investigate that. There's gotta be a ton of images/videos demonstrating how they all look.

Found a few training groups in the Bay Area, more than I was expecting really. A couple in the south bay that do precision rifle classes and have access to 3/5/7/1k spots at a few different sites. Sounds hella fun. There's another right by me in Brentwood, so they must have some private land.

Some basics:

Budget has grown I guess. I'm not opposed to something $500 or $700 if it's quality (like the Vortex Diamondback Tactical for 500?), but without the bells & whistles I don't need. Seems like I'll probably end up in the 1000-1300 range though. Vortex PST Gen II, Nightforce SHV. Even buying a rifle over 1k was really hard to do, if that helps. I can't afford/justify 2500+ for the glass....yet.

100yd is gonna remain my most common range, but there's several 200 nearby, and at one particular spot I like has a 300 and a private 1000. I figure if I really enjoy going over 100 I'll find some nearby clubs.

-Daytime only with good light, both covered and open
-Good weather
-No hunting, target only
-Not competitive, I just don't like investing time without good tools/equipment
-Don't know if MOA or MIL would be better. Seems like MOA for now
-FFP sounds like a nice feature
found a vortex video demonstrating the difference. Looks like it's a personal preference?
-Is HD noticibly more clear at 100-300yd?
-I have thick corrective lenses (I'm like 20/400), corrected to at best 20/30 with astigmatism, in case that affects anything
