Default PDXTUNING / PDX Tuning- Jarrad

I'm in Portland, OR. and did a crap ton of research before going for my first dyno tune. I was going to go to Surgeline due to a deal they had with a half off protune after a minimum purchase of stage one kit. But they really screwed up and I would not recommend them to anyone. Plus, Lance is no longer there and they're not a COBB shop either. But, really my decision to search out another vendor had nothing to do with that. It had everything to do with their character and sales BS.

I have a 2017 STI - Build thread and dyno results CLICK HERE (mods if that link is not OK please let me know)

My days of research led me to PDXTuning. PDXTuning was all the guys from Surgeline before they left PDXTuning and Surgeline was created. Jarrad (owner/operator) of PDXTuning kept PDXTuning and is the owner/operator. As I understand (google research) it Tim Bailey, Jeff Sponologue, and Jarrad were the brains behind some of the first Cobb maps created.

Anyways- I've now been tuned by Jarrad twice. Jarrad also installed several parts on my car including but not limited to downpipe, injectors, fuel pump, and turbo.

Both times he's impressed me with little things like - hey did you know you were missing a bolt in this location? Or - is it OK if we cut your factory turbo heat shield to clear the upgraded down pipe? As he holds it in his hands and explains to me visually exactly what will be cut and how it will affect the big picture. No up-selling. No vibes that he's looking to find hidden dollars lurking in your car.

He also takes the time to actually show you the maps he's tuning. The first tune we did my kid and I sat in the car on the dyno and he did his best to explain all the tables and changes he was making while still focusing on the tune.

The second tune he just did for me my kid and I hung out in the dyno bay and just let Jarrad concentrate on the tune. He was still talking to us out of the car explaining things on the dyno screen.

He's truly passionate about what he does, and he's not short with words for curious customers.

All that stuff is awesome but what really makes Jarrad a solid choice, along with his experience which is tough to beat, is his character.

Throughout my dealings with him he's proven to be at the top tier in terms of class, integrity, honesty, fairness, and overall just plain giving a crap about his customers and the service they receive from him.

Everyone gets busy, everyone has bad days, etc, etc. What makes a good business a good business is the ability to handle the ups and downs appropriately and Jarrad definitely has this skill nailed.

There's a few choices in Portland, OR. for tuning. Only a couple I'd even consider a side from PDXTUNING but thankfully for now PDXTUNING is there and choice number one.

Thx Jarrad - for everything.

Lol^^^

Basically my story minus having a kid, lol.

100% agree, Jarrod is top notch!!! I had spent a lot of time talking to Tim from Surgline back when he was the main tuner and had a great feeling from him. But by the time I had the car set-up to be pushed (Perrin roatated kit) he was well passed tuning there and was traveling for Cobb. I went back in and talked to the guys that more or less took over the day to day and tuning but got turned off quickly (long story). So I bugged Jeff Perrin and got him to be willing to tune my car, they do not tune customer cars typically so I wanted to be less disruptive to their day to day process and thats when Jeff pointed me to Jarrod.

Car has been making 425whp@21psi on pump 92 and has two "hotter tunes" on 101 and 116. I don't hold back at all on the car, it hits 8k at least a dozen times a day and has done hundreds of 2,500-8,000 pulls for logging and testing with zero issue. He tunes safe and logically without leaving much on the table and spends the time to be sure of it.

Lastly but very importantly Jarrod will go further above and beyond than anyone I have heard of in the tuning world, he actually let me use HIS parts off of HIS project after we had an issue with a few little things when tuning my car. I literally had his throttle body for months and I had to bug him to make sure to get it back to him, lol. I can't say enough about the guy!!!

If he stops tuning I will just keep calling him, lol.

Can you please explain how they screwed up and elaborate on their character and sales BS? Also, how did you determine they are not a COBB shop anymore? I just checked https://www.cobbtuning.com/location/surgeline/ and it seems to still be a working page.

This is relevant to me because I have some install and tuning time coming up with Surgeline and want to make sure this is the right choice.

Tim Bailey also tuned my 2005 STI years ago at Surgeline, and I have never heard anything but good things about them (even if he did leave).

Google reviews are your friend.

Also, PDXtuning install rates have been less by a large margin on more than one occasion for me.

Any more info feel free to pm your number and I'll call you to chat tonight.

This morning I called COBB corporate in Austin to inquire about Surgeline not being a COBB shop anymore. They said that a number of COBB tuning shops' ownership had shifted off COBB itself (including Plano, SoCal, and Surgeline) to independent ownership so that COBB can focus on creating and manufacturing products.

Since it was a company-wide decision by COBB, this doesn't lead me to believe that there was any falling out between them or that Surgeline is any less qualified. If there is some piece of the story I am missing or haven't heard about, by all means please share it here. Good or bad, a forum like this is a great place for everyone to hear the truth.

Regarding Surgeline's prices, yes they are pretty high but I knew that going in to it. I actually thought PDXTuning went out of business years ago but it sounds like it is alive and well, and Jarrad seems like a great guy. Does he blog anywhere or update any discussion threads with work or any projects he does? I'd love to check it out if so.

One thing to note is master tuner Lance Lucas left Surgeline when Cobb severed their business partnership. He went with Cobb. Not to say their (Surgeline) current tuner isn't just as capable but Lance was considered top tier.

Funny thing is jarrad and /or one his counterparts probably trained Lance in a round about way.

Anyways.... I'm not here to bash Surgeline. I'm here to say jarrad and PDXtuning may be a better option as was the case for me. For you it may be Surgeline.

Thanks for sharing the info, you did indeed put Jarrad on the map for me in my mind as I thought PDXTuning was no longer in business. It's a shame I don't live closer to Portland (I'm in the Seattle area) or I'd come check him out.

+1 For PDX Tuning, Jarrod is by far in the top 5 Subaru tuners in the world!

from Portland as well speaking from 100% experience here

My experience with Surgeline was not cool. Right about the time they were breaking from Cobb, I interviewed there for fun (I do that a lot, interviewed at PRE too...) I am a journeyman aerospace tig welder and master mechanic, but I don't tune. I have a 02 wrx hybrid 205/257 garret turbo that I just built and I needed a tune so I went out to see who I can trust. When I got the quote on the access port originally from a guy in Surgelines shop (won't name him) it was way over what another guy in the shop quoted me (won't name him either). First guy told me something along the lines of 'Cobb's pricing is super strict' Meanwhile I am doing business with the guy in the other room who is more than willing to work with me and form a relationship because if I don't trust you, you definitely aren't tuning my car!!

so I showed up, first guy saw me and probably thought 'oh I made the sale' and I said no I am here for the second guy and he was confused. Second guy gives him the bill and he just sits down and doesn't look at me. Wack. This is all after I just interviewed there. Then after all this, he calls me and offers me the job. LOL, um no. Straight tried to play the player. I don't know if he realized that was possible. Anyway, I got the better price and will never step foot in that shop again.

Now I have the Cobb accessport and it's tuned by Jarrad PDXtuning and the car is bad as hell. I have had several tunes on several motors and setups and turbos now, the guy is the best and I am SUPER FORTUNATE to have him as a person locally I can trust (and give money to) to work on keeping my car running optimally because like I said, I can weld fab and wrench, but I don't tune cars (yet). Can't recommend Jarrad enough for tuning!

Does anyone have an email for them? Or address? I don’t use my phone to talk much as the mic is a **** and google search doesn’t really seem legit on their location.

Toss me a pm with your number, I will be happy to text him and let him know you have questions regarding a tune and let him figure out what way he prefers to contact you. Hope that helps.
