Default Rust on body - denied warrenty

Hi you folks
Love the car, hate SOA!
Obvious rust bubbles where the driving lights of my 2000 Outback bolt on to the underside of the bumper bar. Car is still with warrenty (for rust) and took it in to be looked at. SOA rep said that it wasn't enough corrosion!
Hmm looks pretty bad to me. Emailed SOA but they said they won't overturn their field inspectors decison....Still fighting!

Having read on this forum that the ABS problems are all solved on the '04 WRXs, I must say "not so". I believe that I have encountered sajohnson's second problem with my '04 WRX on at least 1 occasion (@ ~ 22k miles). That said, I haven't yet attempted to bleed the system and look for bubbles. Perhaps I can get to that soon. Will post an update -- stay tuned The problem I had was probably 1/4 braking power and brake pedal traveling to the floor rather than keeping a constant pressure/height.

Not sure why I haven’t posted here before or anyone else for that matter but here is my "trouble".

Name: William Duvall

Make: 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX STi

Mileage: ~19,000 miles

Time Out Of Use: none

Scary Moments Of Use: Dozens (I don't have an exact count, sorry)

Problem And Likely Cause: Weak hubs that are flexing and causing knockback

Modifications: TWR 2-piece slotted front rotors for last 9 months which are the same size as stock (mfr claimed) and I still have the stock front rotors.

Submitted For Warranty Work (Yes/No): No

Reason Given For Denial: n/a

Your Story: Severe, my non-expert assessment, knockback after sharp and/or high speed turn. This happens mostly on exit ramps, on and off, and U-turns. After a turn that causes this issue the car has virtually no braking ability until you pump the brake pedal to push the brake pads back to the rotors. I've had to make a hard stop in traffic before when the knockback occurred, unknown to me, and had no braking ability so i had to swerve off the road and upon next attempt to brake I was able to come to a safe stop, as safe as can be expected off the road.

My '99 Outback sedan just seized the front passenger caliper lower pot. This can happen, usually because of corrosion under the seal. I can assure you that this had nothing to do with degradation of the brake hoses, since the caliper pot was still unable to be moved after it was removed from the brake line. I did the repair on my own and it still ran me about $200 in parts.

well this was the 2nd i had to get my brake pads checked.....at first they resurfaced it, that didn't last long though....after that the pads were worn out so much that the front would shake while braking.

got new fron pads and rotated rotors under service

Problem: pulsating brake pedal, sometimes only.
Mods: none
Submitted for warranty: Dealer did it voluntarily.
Story: Bought 2 wks ago as used from non-Subaru used ar lot. No records of any maintenance work; owner did his own oil/filter changes.
Talked to new dealer locally last week about automatic transfer of factory warranty with no service records. Said to bring it in for checkout and servicing if necessary. Reminded them again today at dropoff that brakes sometimes pulsated. Returned to pick it up; normal 22,500 service completed for stated price, and 4 rotors resurfaced for no charge. Also free screw button cover for tailgate screw. Good first experience with Welsh Subaru, Limerick, PA.

Default Brake Issues

Subaru must be using the worst metal available. I just had all new rotors and pads put on my 2001 Impreza 2.5RS last summer and as I was driving to work the other night I heard this nasty scraping noise. Not to mention that it felt like I only had half the braking power. Well when I got to work I noticed that the rear rotors were scored. The calipers are frozen and that has totally ruined my brand new pads and rotors. I have only put about 4000 miles on the car since I had this done. I am not a happy person. It's bad enough the passenger door is not opening, even with a key and that the air conditioning condensor needs to be replaced. I have an extended warranty which should have covered that but my dealer said, "no", you damaged it. Let me tell you this car has never had any front end damage. I had an adjuster from Geico look at, just to cover myself, and they said it was just pushed back by the snow. Doesn't Subaru tout that this vehicle is for winter driving?!
I would like to know if anyone has experienced this type of problem? I believe this was caused by the linings on the caliper not being cleaned when they put the brakes back.
I am new to this forum and am very happy I found it.

Story:
Bought the vehicle 2 weeks ago with 3100 miles on it as it was a dealer demo.
Wanted an STi but the family will not fit, so got the next best thing in a family size wagon. Great deal on the car, but it had a noticable pulse in the brake pedal, especially under hard barking. Comes along with a slight 'grinding' noise for extra effect.
Talked with dealer before the sale about it and they said give it a week and if it's still there we'll see what we can do. Called last week...give it a little time...is it getting better? NO Call again this week...give it a little more time.... Explained that a car costing this much should not have crappy brakes...I want NEW rotors and pads....they're looking into it.

It's dealers like this that give the whole industry a bad reputation. I honestly don't understand why any car dealer would jerk a customer around like this -- especially over brakes! Just replace the rotors (and possibly the pads) and appologize for the inconvenience.

They're stooping pretty low to try and save the cost of replacing a couple rotors.

Modifications: HID, audio/video system, S-tech Springs(yes, i know...but TEIN used my car to test fit), brakes are stock

Reason Given For Denial: they said,"You lowered your car, when you put springs on, the brakes can make noise. We are going to have to void your warranty."

Your Story: I said, "oh yeah? so you are trying to tell me that lowering springs can directly cause brake noise huh? and you are going to VOID my warranty or deny me coverage? can i get that in writing?" the svc writer replys, "yeah, subarus are like that." i ask, "so, springs in subaru directly cause noise from the braking system on a car with stock brakes and wheels?" the svc writer replies, "uh yeah, its been known to happen." so i ask , "ok, can i get that in writing?" and he replies, "oh don't worry too much, we'll take a look at it real quick first."

then after my oil change (that i paid for), they said , " we couldn't find anything wrong. Your front pads are at 40% and the backs are at 90%. There is nothing wrong with it." I figure they pulled it all apart to check for wear, and everything got put back together clean...haven't heard the noise yet...we'll see.

this all happened at Irvine Subaru...and the parts manager tried to sell me the SPT intake for 300 bux. ugh.

UPDATE: they didn't do crap. the noise is still there, i'll look at it when it comes back from the body shop...

REASON GIVEN FOR DENIAL: "We inspected the vehicle and verified the brakes to pullsate when applied, these wheels are aftermarket and were not touqued evenly. We need to reseurface the rotors, torque the wheels and recheck, cost is $133.50 rotor surface is not warrantable with 35,990 miles."

MY STORY: I told them that my steering wheel shook when I applied the brakes. I don't understand how they could determine that the wheels weren't torqued evenly. Why aren't the rotors resurfacable after 35,990 miles if I have a 36k bumper to bumper warranty?

Your Story:
I just had my car up at my local Subaru dealer because my breaks pulsating badly. I figured that they were warped and should get them fixed, the guy at the service dept. said the same thing and everything was covered under warranty. Well, I just got a phone call from them saying that the rear rotors are extremely bad and the front ones were scorned, requiring all 4 rotors and pads to be replaced.

They are claiming that this doesn't happen with normal driving, its from "excessive driving or abusive driving". What??? This is a show car, I BABY this thing! It has NEVER seen a race track, never been driven hard and I am the only one that has driven it, to and from work, and the occasional car show. Its a show car, I don't abuse it. They are refusing to replace the rotors and brakes as a warranty claim, and it will cost me over $900 to replace them out of pocket. Mind you that this denial is coming from their service dept manager, and not from SOA, however the manager is a rep of SOA being that he works there, so I'm guessing thats the same thing.

I am so pissed, what can I do??? Please help!

I just did, and got a case number and everything. SOA took my information and what dealership and said he will call me tomorrow with more info (being that its so late in the afternoon). SOA said they need documentation and possibly even photos before they can make their decision.

I just think this is rediculous the crap they are making me go thru to make my car safe again.

Now how would you ever go about proving that that was ABS related? Did you even attempt to get the ABS system looked at by the dealership?

^^^ ouch that sucks... sounds more weather related, insurance should take care of the repair and go from there.

If it was my car, and that happened, I'd definitely have the ABS checked out, because they should never lock up on dry pavement ! Of course, you didn't mention the road condition.

Something stinks here, and it ain't brake dust !

Reason Given For Denial: They claim abbuse

Your Story: The car started to get a wobble when I would break, so I took it in and they said that my rotors where worping. So they shaved them down, replaced the pads and with in a matter of time the wobble was back, so I took the car back and they ordered new rotors and changed the pads again...

Now my side, Ive never tracked the car, i dont run the hell out of my breaks and I dont even think professional drivers worp two sets of rotors in less than a year... I try to tell them that I think its the dealership putting the breaks on wrong but they wont listen to me...
Any help or thoughts would be appreciated

Adam..

Brake pulsation due to pad and rotor issues is not uncommon on our cars (OTOH it is very uncommon on STis). You got your free rotors and pads under warranty so give in at this point. Ride them out until they are worn out or you can't stand it anymore and then go aftermarket with better rotors and pads.
