Default BRZ electric steering into 04 WRX

So I love the steering on my 16 BRZ. Would love to get better steering in my 04 WRX. Not likely possible because of different design, anyone know for sure? I no others are trying to improve the ratio by using the 15 STI rack. I will monitor how they do. Never thought the 04 WRX steering was bad until I got the BRZ.

Right there with you. Really love the steering in my 13 BRZ compared to my 05 WRX. Going to turn the WRX into an 818 this upcoming year so curious about different steering racks.

Reviving this thread - anything else to do to improve steering in my 04WRX.

Have whiteline rack bushings, have 04STI rack, and STI steering column U-joint connector.

Firmer control arm bushings, wider lower profile tires, wheels that are wider than "measuring width" for the tire size, alignment settings.

Add Caster, this will add weight/feel to the steering

04-06 STi control arms, ALK, and adjustable camber plates are all possible ways

For improved steering response I have found the best thing to do is remove weight from the nose of the car. Battery relocation, lighter bumper beam, etc... It is a tedious process though and for a lot of people, it isn't worth the effort. All of the other suggestions made here also help.

That said, I am working on retrofitting a BRZ power steering setup into my 2003 WRX. It is very much a work in progress but I can give you the gist of it so far. Also, this started out as a telescoping retrofit project that has morphed into an electric steering conversion.

I am currently using:

-GR steering column (upper half)
-GR turn signal/wiper brackets
-GD turn signal/wiper switches (although the GR switches have the same plug and might work)
-BRZ power steering motor and steering linkage

Still need to buy:

-GR clock spring
-86 electric power steering control module
-Canbus emulator (this is probably the most expensive part of this project ~$300)

To be determined:

-GD ignition switch (pretty sure this will swap over)
-Depowering a 2015 STi rack (spendy; fewer mods) or using an 86 rack (cheaper; more mods).
-Clockspring wiring
-Random small things

So far it has been a lot of trimming of the GR column to get the BRZ p/s motor to land where I need it to land. It really only "fits" in one spot under the GD dash.

I think I may have found your blog online showing what you did with this setup. I was wondering if you think you could help me a little.

I've got an 02 wrx column that has everything on it. Do you think it'd be possible to use the turn signal stalks, clockspring assembly and possibly ignition switch on a BRZ/FRS column?

It's going in a Locost so space won't matter as much but I'd like to keep as much as I can to avoid buying more than I need.

Shoot me a PM on here if you could please. Thanks

I know the BRZ column uses a different mount design for the switches/clock spring than the GD/GRs. It uses the clamp style versus the bracket. FWIW, I think the VA uses a similar style to the BRZ. You will probably need to cut remove the GD bracket and weld it onto the BRZ column... assuming there is room. Or you could make a custom bracket.

To be honest, I had to shave down my 03 clockspring quite a bit to get it to fit over the GR column. If I remove any more material the clockspring will probably come apart. The BRZ column looks thicker, but it is hard to say for sure. It might be easier to use all BRZ parts (or 06-07 WRX/STI or GR parts) since this is going into a different car.

You will also need to figure out the ignition/lock system. IIRC, the BRZ has push-button start. From the pics I've seen, the GD ignition lock probably won't transfer over easily.

This site has a lot of good pics of the BRZ steering column.

Sure thing. I am going to post it here as well for anyone else that's looking for this info.

Thanks for your reply, your post has helped for sure. I'll probably buy a FRS/BRZ column soon to start seeing what all can be swapped easily. I'm not terribly worried about the ignition switch swapping since I will probably not even use the stock ignition switch. As far as everything else however I may just see about using the BRZ/FRS column entirely and swapping the wheel over with whatever adapter they use since I just have a MOMO wheel.

Thanks again.

Good deal. Let me know how it works out for you.
