Default IAT relocation. Who has done it?

Looking for some help on the IAT relocation. I think people are using GM IAT sensors, drilling and tapping the intake manifold right below the throttle body, and wiring it into the MAF sensor plug. Can someone help me out a bit here?

I am good with the drilling and tapping and the wiring. I just need to know what sensor I should use, where I should put it, and what I tap it into.

Thanks everyone

-Dave

I'm using the gm one. Its in my ic piping after the ic. I used a aluminium 02sensor bung from summit and welded it on. The wiring I cant help you with, I'm using a standalone.

Thanks for the reply. I have no experience with welding aluminum but this might be a good excuse to go get some brazing sticks and learn.

Anyone else with the wiring advice? I'm sure it's as easy as running the sensor to the two wires used for the IAT on the MAF connector if someone knows the pinout for it.

Maxwell Power installed one on the lower end tank of my friend's TMIC. I wasn't there to discuss location with MPS, but I would think that the intake manifold runner for the #3 cylinder (closest to the turbo) would be the one to be most concerned about...

No I don't know any tuners that would want it in the manifold. It heat soaks too much and makes it not accurate.

I just installed mine and like scby rex I placed it in the IC piping about 10" from the TB and my meth bung is about 5" from the TB.

Been doing all of mine like so. Right on the opposite side of the throttle body.

Heat soak is minimal.

I have only seen these installed in the intake manifold. Plus I have phenolic spacers, and the IAT sensor is insulated from the threads on it. I think I know where to put it. What about the wiring

I know there was a diagram around here that showed what wires to tap into, orange with a stripe and brown I think.

No need to tap and weld. Use this one and just thread it into your intake manifold and get the most accurate reading you can. It uses the same calibrations as the GM IAT.

Ive been using this one with good success.

What hole are you threading it into? isnt the pcv a 1/4"npt? Or are you using a insulator of some sort as a adapter?

I have the T1 as well...

There is a threaded 1/8th NPT hole with a barb fitting in it on the front of the IM used for the EGR/Purge valve. I deleted all that stuff and used the hole for the IAT.

I put the sensor (gm iat) in my tmic where the bov was.

Then for the wiring I put push plugs so I can go back to stock for smog.

I have also done that but not for smogg, its just incase I need to swap back for what ever reason.

I would recommend the GM IAT sensor.
It should be as close to the combustion chamber as possible.
Perhaps you should buy a AOS and use the hole in the manifold housing the PCV valve.

If you have some spare change lying around, the long runner spec c manifold has a hole specifically for an IAT sensor, and you can scrap the TGV's at the same time if you haven't already. You will need adapters for the fuel rails though, somebody around here sells them.

Bumping this back up. Been hearing a lot of people saying the iat in the manifold is bad with ZERO proof as to why. It's always a blanket statement.

Been doing it and been watching afrs and all is well. Anyone else?

My tuner (Jason Carberry) asked me to install mine in the intake manifold, just beyond the throttle body, right next to the check valve for the crank. My logic for doing it this way is, if you're at an idle and your throttle is closed, you want the engine temps to be what the manifold temp is since that air is more stagnant and probably heat soaked. Your charge piping or TMIC would have less heat soak and be a couple degrees cooler than the air the cylinders are actually seeing.

Do those couple extra degrees of temperature matter? I doubt it. Do I have proof this is true and not just BS? Absolutely not. That's just all an educated guess on why he prefers the IAT sensor in the manifold rather than the cold pipe/TMIC.
