Question 2019 WRX - how to protect the trunk bulkhead (top rear opening)?

Pure Red 2019 WRX, with a trunk (because that's how they're made these days...)

just asking around to see if anyone has gone to a length (great or small) to put some type of protection/protector on the metal (trunk) bulkhead that is the rain channel for the bottom of the rear window...

when loading things into the trunk, I always seem to get really close to and/or brush this body color painted piece of metal. I've already put one scratch in it and the car is just 10 months old.

I know there are plenty of clear bra type items (film and spray), but curious if anyone has put any effort into covering it to prevent gouges in the paint when loading/unloading the trunk. It is a tricky place, so applying said film/spray would be a difficult endeavor.

I know I can always rely on my 'old faithful' painter's blue tape. Two layers should be adequate, but I was hoping for something more permanent and possibly less blue.

I also thought about some adhesive felt (various colors available), from the craft store, but not sure how well the adhesive would stick to the metal, especially in hot, 80*F+ (26.6*C+ for our Canadian neighbors) temperatures.

I want it to look "good" and not like a cheap hack.

So...does anyone any thoughts or ideas. Input is welcome. Sarcastic answers are welcome too, but I'd rather have plausible solutions.

Cheers.

I haven't gotten close, but I have scratched the plastic trim surrounding the trunk latch. You're referring to the actual rear decklid? Maybe some speaker box carpeting and some 3M 90 adhesive spray. I've used upholstery suede on other panels on other cars with 90 spray so that might work too.

no, not the trunk lid/decklid, i.e. that piece that moves up and down.

I'm talking about the piece of metal that, more or less, is or makes up the rear window rain channel, that the weather stripping is applied to; but the part of it that is technically inside the trunk.

This piece of metal, if you put your head in the trunk a bit sideways and look up, has some (speed) holes in it and resides to the rear of the trunk light.

This isn't the rear parcel shelf or the plastic piece that sits on top of it inside the cabin. Everything I'm talking about is in the (cavity of the) trunk.

I've got one of those NASIOC picture accounts. I may have to test it out and throw up a picture.

I would use something thicker than clear bra if you are bumping it with cargo. You can't see it when the lid is closed anyway.

I'd even consider using a sheet of aluminum, cut/bend to shape, and VHB tape it to the trunk ceiling

I'd just stop banging into it! I have 2 sedans and have never hit them. I even take my Sti to menards, fold the rear seats down and load it up. I just did that last Sunday actually. A lot more fun to drive it than a boring truck!!

solution to any most problems...stop doing what is causing the problem.

I don't hit it all the time with the stuff I'm putting in the trunk. However there are a few items that get really, really close.

My last car was a GTI and with the hatch, I didn't have any issues putting, standing taller objects in the hatch. This is where the LeVorg would be the big winner.

In the end, I'm just looking to protect the paint. It really doesn't have a clear coat on it, just the red paint and I want to preserve it to the best extent possible.

Shoot, I might buy a small can of brush-on bedliner. Wait for a really nice hot day (like the last few) and apply a layer or two to that piece.

I might try several options at once and see what works best. I'll report back with findings after enough experimentation time has passed.

well, right now, I've put some yellow and black "safety zone" tape on that piece.

if nothing else, it should stand out enough to draw attention to the area.
