Yokohama A052 (2019) vs Bridgedtone RE71R vs BFG Rival
So the updated A052 has started to win some regional SCCA event classes beating out the Bridgestones and BFGs. Figured I would start a thread about it...
https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...del=ADVAN+A052 Early reviews say they are better at managing heat and may last longer than RE71Rs. Tire Rack and Grassroots will probably have reviews soon.

Checked Yokohama's website, they've got RA tire sizing there - guess TR doesn't.

I ran them on my '18 STI last year; they really need camber. 3 of the 4 tires corded within 1.5 days on track. The best I could get out of the front was -1.7ish, and the rear close to -2. They didn't wear down to the cords, either, but chunked. Pretty fast tire, though, I liked running on them. They were over 3 seconds a lap faster than the stock Yoko Advans at Palmer, which is a fair bit.

Edit: They increased the tread depth this year so they will be legal for SCCA autox. Previously they were below the minimum tread depth. There may also have been a compound change. Last edited by Kostamojen; 06-15-2019 at 06:40 PM. |

I'm not waiting for any reviews. A set of A052 245/40/18's will be going on my STH car very soon. I'm sick and tired of the RE71's extremely narrow performance window and BFG doesn't make a 245/18. I'd pick the Yok's over the BFG's anyway since I had really good luck them in the past (2005). A competition tire like the RE71 should not have noticeably more grip at a tread temp of 95F compared to a tread temp of 120F. I know part of the reason is there is an awful lot of weight on the fronts, but my rears get greasy at 100F+ tire temps too. I don't have a problem with wear or temp distribution with the RE71's since I have 3.25 negative front camber. I have just never driven a tire that can go from awesome to suck so fast.

The only change between last year and this year was to go from 6mm of tread depth to 7mm. Entirely done for legality with AutoX and OLOA. Compound did not change.

Any others with input here?
I see the new A052's are now practically the same price as the Re-71's. Thinking of pulling that trigger. Last edited by pazzoduc; 10-12-2019 at 02:29 PM. |

Bump from the dead!!!! My RE71's have about 1, MAYBE 2 track days left so i'm in the market.
I've heard people having good reviews on the NT01's but they don't come in 265/35r18. I've also heard Nankang? is good. Interested to hear reviews/suggestions. |

Track days or Autocross? This thread is about competitive autocross tires.

Here for the reviews and to report what I've seen.
We have two experienced guys running them on two different cars locally. One is an STH setup 2020 WRX. Properly set up, good driver. He's been at the top of STH locally. In the 17-20 place range out of 107 drivers consistently in a highly competitive region. In the upper 10% of our less competitive, non-SCCA group too. We have another guy running a GS Civic with them. Both drivers last time when co-driving came in first in PAX out of 107 and 7th in 9th in raw time.... in a GS car. Again, good drivers, but it's a capable tire. People keep claiming you need loads of camber with them, but that GS Civic doesn't have it. 1-1.5 degrees if that. He's at 45 runs total now with some wear on the outsides. Says he'll probably get another 30-40 out of them before flipping. You're looking at 150 runs total out of a set, with a flip. Here's the kicker though - price. RE-71R's in 225/45/17 (just as a common size) are $175/tire vs $191/tire for the Yoks. Not a huge difference for maybe a 5-10% increase in overall grip. However, Bridgestone gives a $70/set rebate for SCCA members (I hope you all have been using it) and they usually have other discounts of $60 or so like right now. The difference in price, in total, is $200! That's around a 34% increase in price! (when the rebate and discounts are applied). Time will tell if they can put down competitive times over their tread life. REs tend to fall on their face after about 125 runs in general, depending on surface, camber, and the car. They're tread can last up to 200 runs in my experience. Even if the Yoks were compeditive for 175 runs and then the tread was out, it might very well be worth the extra money. Extra tid-bit: Road noise is wayyyy less with the Yoks due to the asymmetric, non-directional pattern. They're more forgiving over large bumps too. |
