If the 1st gen Legacy is just below the STi quickness wise and easier to install (and probably cheaper) why is no one using that minus jamal is wasn't thrilled for what it sounds like. Guess I'll be looking into replacing my 19:1 Outback rack with a regular Legacy though. Anyone know the difference between the two racks (Leg vs Outback)?

Missed that one, thanks. The stock steering wheel on the Lego is definitely smaller than the WRX then

I have an 05 rack but I have the crossmember. I had to cut the steering linkage in half and weld a hybrid using the STi rack side and the Legos steering side. I actually have to take it out and extend it now that my engine has spacers on the X member to drop it down to lower my COG. It feels much better then stock especially with the Whiteline bushings in there. Before autocrossing was spent flailing my arms wildly turning the wheel and now its much easier. I plan to go a step further someday and make a burly version of the quick steer brackets that Perrin did by moving the tie rod location closer to the hubs pivot point allowing for more movement of the wheels for less movement of the steering wheel.

I'm running an 04 STi rack with the Legacy column. As far as I can tell the STi rack should bolt into the Legacy x-member (I'm using an 04 STi x-member with the swap) and there is more than enough adjustment in the STi rod ends to account for the narrower track.

Making the correct adapter to go from the STi rack to the Legacy column is very easy, you just swap the rack end from the STi linkage onto your Legacy linkage.

You can find my full writeup here with photos showing how to swap over the linkage end.

Coming back to this topic again. I'm looking into getting a PSR quick rack. They make GC and GD versions, not a BD version. I think that the easiest option would be to do the GC rack, because I wouldn't have to worry about adapting the steering shaft. Can anyone confirm that is correct? (PSR is over in Poland, so there's a bit of a language barrier as we exchange messages on FB.)
