At the oil change places around here conventional oil change is $20, synthetic oil change is $60. The advantage is $40, and also less concern about oil leaks/consumption.
Yes, synthetic oil is superior, but as long as conventional is good enough and I don't get excessive engine wear, I don't see compelling reason for synthetic.

I wouldn’t run conventional after getting UOA on 0w-40 synthetic. Overall wear was still low, but a lot more wear than 0w-20 or 0w-30. Most of it is startup wear and conventional will flow even worse on a cold start than synthetic.

There is ZERO benefit to thicker or conventional oil IMHO, which is why I am back to 0w20

Right at a shop they are up charging you huge for either oil.

60$ for 7500 miles or
20$for 3k miles then yes it’s cheaper.

I do my own changes so it’s about $25 for synth and like $18 for conventional which is cheaper in the long run and a lot better for the engine.

I usually need to add about 0.5 quart oil after 5000 miles. I'm experimenting with 5w30 conventional oil right now. I'm hoping the thicker oil will 'leak' less and less oil consumption.
A quart every 10,000 miles?

Want to save money in the long run? Run the oil the manual calls for.

If you really need that 0.53 cents per mile, perhaps four wheeled transportation is not for you.

I understand 0w20 is better for low temperature, but I live in California where the coldest that we ever had is 35 degrees and most of year about 55 degree cold start temperature. There's hardly any benefit of 0w20 at these temperature ranges.

You realize “cold” for oil is 100F, right??

As Keen said, you are on pace for 1qt/10k,meaning if you follow the 7500 interval you won’t have to add any.

To go 7500 on conventional you probably need to change the oil at least twice, so how much are you really saving?? W/o a UOA, there is no way I would run factory intervals on anything but synthetic.

If you want to experiment, do 5w20 synthetic, it has much lower NOACK (spelling?), usually around 5% compared to 0w20 in the 9-10% range, meaning it will resist evaporating off much better

Just an FYI, if you decide to go ahead with this recall and have an appointment weeks or even months out due to high demand and each dealer only having one specialized tool set to fix the valve springs, you have the right to a loaner car from now until the valve springs are fixed (not just when the car is in for service).

I talked with Subaru of America today and they made it clear they are covering cost of loaner/rental car until the valve springs are replaced.

4/5 dealers I spoke with would not commit to a loaner for that long, but I confirmed with SOA and they will call the dealer on your behalf to get you in a loaner today. Most dealers either had a wait list, a few months out availability, and one even gave me a early 2020 date when they could get the car in for the recall!! Just be polite and forceful with the dealers about your right to a loaner car right now, they are not paying for it, SOA is.

I do have many worries about getting this issue "fixed", if it ain't broke don't fix it...but maybe I'll do it just to save a few months worth of miles/winter salt wear and tear on the old Subie and beat on a loaner car instead, then hope they get some recalls under their belt before.

Dang, I might set mine up for now just to get a loaner through the winter, although they probably will have all seasons on them which won’t work.

I’ll keep a few extra miles off my car though if they will let me lol.

Default Valve Spring Recall

I was advised that the valve spring replacement requires removing the engine for the repair and could take up to one week. I was the first customer in the door. I wasn't prepared to be without the car for a week so I rescheduled for March hoping the dealer would get some experience with the procedure before making the repair on my car.

Has the repair been completed for anyone else successfully? What can you tell me about how it went and any differences in drivability?

They will/are required to give you a free loaner

Dealer loaned us a shiny new Outback for the week that they say the install will take, it still has the sticker in the window. Long term test drive...

You wight want to take in a set of spark plugs if they are due (60K) and see if they'll give a deal on the labor while the engine is out and accessible. The oil will be changed with the repair so they may offer up a 10$ filter, or you can swap it out when you get the car back.

I’m fresh on an oil change and don’t want to worry about having food a car with all seasons. I’ll do it when I’m due for an oil change this summer. That’s nice they gave you a brand new car

Recall service included new Subaru coolant and additive, and they posted my valve clearances on the invoice as well. Got to try out an Eyesight & CVT equipped car for a bit as well. I'm happy, but SOA is out north of $400 mil for this recall, so some sympathy about that.

They are being diligent that is for sure, especially since I haven’t heard of anyone having issues with the springs.

I saw one ‘13 XV that dropped a rocker arm a few years back, not sure if it is because of a broken spring or not. Only report i had seen

They replace the coolant with this recall? Interesting.

Hey everyone,

I wanted to share my story with the valve spring recall and mainly this, it is a fail on the dealer's end.

I was verbally told that a recall was announced that would require the engine to be removed from car to address. This was great news for me as I am experiencing front and both side cam seal leaks and they recommended a reseal. I also was thinking of replacing the TOB at this point because I hear a squeal with the clutch in when its cold. Having the engine out already would save me sooo much on labor for these other services.

Anyway, they scheduled me for a service appointment. I dropped my car off, got a loaner from the dealership, got a call from the dealership the next morning when they started on my car. They told me, my VIN was not part of the recall issue and my mind was blown.

They knew about it for weeks and never checked my VIN beforehand?!?!?! I'm second-guessing having work done there now due to their oblivious service managing skills.

So again, not a recall issue but the dealer issue. I really don't to want to pay to have engine resealed but my oil light came on 2 weeks after an oil change.

Why didn’t you check yourself?

Also you would have gotten a letter in the mail if your car was part of the recall.

I guess its a lesson learned. I did check myself online and it told me, no open recalls. I was just confused I suppose. I also figured maybe my letter would be coming in the mail eventually. After all, mail is not a very fast method of communication.

I just had some false hope that I could save some labor repair charges of removing the engine from the recall. Not that case for me

I had my service done, they said it would take 2 days, but it took 2 days plus a weekend due to a snow storm. I got a new Ascent as a loaner car, with eyesight, which was interesting to experience.

Been getting some squeal/grind myself lately. Blame it on years of commuting in standstill traffic on an uphill bridge.

Ill look into getting the TOB replaced during my service. Thanks for the... suggestion.

Haven't heard back from the local dealer after my initial call regarding the recall notice I received. Time for a follow-up call and check in again. If it's going to take that long to get the work done and they don't want to give a loaner, just drive it until/if it goes kaput - dealer can give me a new engine for all I care. (Would actually prefer that). Though when the CSR survey call comes, they're gonna get it.
