Default Brushless fuel pumps

In process of wrapping up my winter build, (without listing all the details, Stage 4 motor, built heads, 6466, cobb flex fuel, ID2000, all other supporting mods), car will somewhere in the neighborhood of 800whp.

I'm working details out on the surge tank setup and have been intrigued by the brushless pumps on the market as an alternative to tossing a bunch of walbro 485s in the surge tank.

Anyone running a Fuelab Prodigy in tank and using their electronic regulator or PWM to control speed?

Or any other brushless options, i'm not worried about trunk space so an external pump is not a problem either.

Thanks!

I'd probably wait until a major OEM manufacturer releases a brushless motor pump... but brushless in general is better than brushed from a reliability and efficiency standpoint. The biggest downside is the need for more sophisticated control.

I won't argue with your point at all there. Injector Dynamics has been teasing one for a couple years, wish it was on the market because their quality control is usually good enough to be early adopter on anything they release.

I've just about convinced myself to take a chance on the Fuel Lab Prodigy pump in a radium surge tank, and use their electronic FPR. May regret it later, but if it works it's going to be pretty sweet.

I just pulled the trigger on that same setup (FueLab Prodigy pump, in a Radium surge tank, with their electronic FPR). I have the pump, surge tank and FPR and they are all works of art. Still need to get some plumbing supplies and I'll get it all in the car. I hope to get re-tuned within in the next month. I'll report back on how everything works out.

Awesome! Look forward to hearing how it works out for you, i'll be putting mine in around the time you are getting tuned!

Any updates/feedback on this setup?

I had pretty terrible luck with the Fuelab setup. Every time the pump came on it made a horrible noise for a few seconds. It sounded like it wasn't primed, even though the surge tank was full. I'm guessing it was cavitating for some reason. I also had issues maintaining fuel pressure when I got the car tuned, but I believe that was mainly caused by the return line being too restrictive, so I don't entirely blame the Fuelab setup for that. That being said, their electronic fuel pressure regulator is very sensitive to back pressure, which can cause issues with the pressure regulator signaling the fuel pump to increase duty cycle.

I called Fuelab about the noise and they said it was normal. After taking the car to get tuned, I pulled the pump out of the surge tank and found glitter in the bottom of the surge tank, which I hope isn't "normal". I had to pull the whole fuel system apart and send the injectors to be cleaned/checked. Luckily none of the metal made its way in to my injectors, so my motor should be OK. That could have gone really badly if I didn't notice the pump was grinding itself to death.

My tuner called another shop that had previous experience with Fuelab brushless pumps and they had run in to similar issues. Their theory was altitude had something to do with it. (I'm in Colorado.) In any case, I decided to punt on the Fuelab setup and I'm switching to a big Walbro in the surge tank.

Anyone try the brushless pump yet? I remember talking about it awhile back since I'm into electric RC cars and brushless is the way to go with them!

Way late coming back to this, but had some life issues and never got my build done, but will be finishing shortly thanks to all this new found time due to COVID-19.

That said, i've also punted on the Fuelab set up, took forever to get the pump, and then when I knew I wasn't going to have time to work on my car we tossed that set up in my buddies car and the pump failed. Fuelab has a new version out, but after trying to deal with the owner, I don't have much good to say about them.

The Walbro brushless is getting some good reviews, but still haven't seen/heard a big name shop run one.

The external aeromotive and weldon pumps seem to be the best for reliability for the big fuel requirement cars...

Im guessing the biggest advanage other than lifecycle would be using the stock electrical supply and being able to run a much more capable pump without maxing out the feed.

Pretty much, and without having to run two pumps in one vessel creating a lot of extra heat is a big additional benefit.

I run two pumps and my fuel temps are great! Just a FYI
