rexygirl,

Thank you for this post. It is the long version of what I have been stating forever. I voted for this to be a sticky, but that's up to the mod of this forum. In any event, I've bookmarked it and will post it constantly.

I was just tired of reading post after post of people saying "SOA /dealer sucks...they voided my warranty" when in all actuality they just denied the claim. There is a difference and I thought that point needed to be stressed. Not only for the people that thought they had no warranty, but to redeem SOA/dealer from being the "bad guy".

I have to admit though, this forum has come along way since I first joined. (Around the time the 02 WRX's came out) Now there are people on here that actually understand SOA's and the dealer's reasoning behind what they do. Before, almost everyone thought that SOA/dealers had no right doing what they did.

What exactly did they tell you was the reason? Are you sure it is completely voided? Or did you just go in for warranty work and they said "NO" to that repair?

sorry if this is a silly question but....
what performance mods can be done without getting denied for a warranty claim?
ie: are External engine mods ok (bolt ons)? Upgraded Programming?

Not sure if there is a definite answer for this but thought I'd ask...
I just bought a 2002 WRX with mods, but it has the extended warranty, not sure if this extended warranty will cover anything?

Tires are warrantied by the tire manufacturer. Rims are covered by Subaru if they are original and defective, which now will be hard to prove, since they have been off the car and dismounted. The dealership will only cover the factory warranty 1 time within the 3/36 period anyway, so if you had an alignment done when the wheels and tires replaced, the factory alignment is not loner "on the car" either.

There is a bit of a problem I have with Subaru in terms of how much they stand behind their cars. I love the cars to death, but I have a problem of how Subaru planed to advertise their vehicles.

If you don't want people to buy your cars from a performance perspective and drive them as a performance vehicle don't advertise a 0-60 time for your car. I mean if Subaru is going to tell someone that drives their car a little harder then the average soccer mom, then don't tell them it's a family sedan or wagon. If you want that kind of image advertise your vehicles by showing commercials of the cars driving full of kids, down a nice treelined road, going 45MPH. Don't advertise them hauling ass around corners and tell us it's a "Rally Car".

Think of how many sales Lambo or Ferrari would drop of they looked at their customers and told them... hummm, sorry we can't cover that problem because you were doing 180MPH down the road and we believe you took your car to a racing event. Sure, those cars are not in the same league as our little Subaru's, but one has to wonder why Subaru would advertise the vehicles one way and then cover warranty on them in another way.

With all that said, I'm not stating that Subaru should cover everyone's claim for something stupid that they do with the car, but take a much more inteligent way of reviewing a car's mods and the customer's overall persona and then go from there in terms of covering a claim or not. Most of the time this is not the fact.

Also, keep in mind that some dealers arround the US actually provide their customers with mods and actually install them and then cover those parts for responsible customer. Other totally frawn uppon any mods and wouldn't think twice about denying a claim. To me there is a double standard here that needs to be addressed by SoA. Imagine how much SoA's image would improve if they actually interacted more with their customer and actually cared about the percentage of customers that are performance oriented. SoA should start a small performance group that asks customers that are going to mod their cars to register with them and inform them of anything they change on the cars. These SoA Performance Group reps should be very well versed in aftermarket products and their use as to properly know how to handle issues that may arise from a customer calling in with problems. If Subaru values their customer base that represents "us/the enthusiest" then they should step up to bat and set a manufacturer example for all other companies that cater to such enthusiets. If you don't value our business, then fine... build and sell your Tribecas for the "soccer moms".

I agree that Subaru can do more for the performance oriented crowd, but when was the last time you saw any car commercial that didn't have the disclaimer "Professional driver on closed course."?

There was a commercial for the Saturn Scion that showed all the modifications you could do (or order) for your car....all backed by Saturn. On the bottom was a disclaimer to the effect of "any modifications can void a warranty...blah blah....It's all part of the advertising. To get your attention. The rally commercial did just what it intended to do...got a different crowd of people to buy Subarus. That's what advertising is all about

"Professional driver on closed course." does not mean "We'll not cover your warranty claim if you do the same."

Also, I think I'm not the only one that thinks that companies are on the verge of false advertising all the time, but point out these little displaimers (which are written at like FONT Size 2 on the screen) to get out of lawsuites instead of just advertising their product correctly. Anything to make a dollar I guess and then once you've made that dollar don't care what happens next... you've sold the product.

It's like selling a lollypop to a kid and then telling them they can't lick it.

I totally agree about the advertising thing, but that's how things are sold. Not just cars, but everything you buy these days. I was floored when I saw the ad on the Scion and the warranty disclaimer at the bottom. Another commercial that got me was the one for the truck (Toyota maybe) where they drop everything in the bed and the truck drives out from the rubble...yeah, like you could really do that..

I don't hear much about warranty denials on these boards for spirited driving (as is represented in the commercials) vs. warranty denials for auto-xing (which is not represented on the commercial, track racing (which is not on the commercials) and for breaking things by not knowing how to drive them (missed shifts, hitting curbs, etc.). When I first read some of the denial posts I was shocked and saddened that a company would deny claims based on what was posted. Then some folks on here found more information from previous posts and pretty much demonstrated that there was more to the story - - . I try to remember now that there are two sides to every story and what is posted on here surely has the slant in favor of the poster. Many of the post are indicating how warranty is paid without a problem. I guess if Subaru was able to post rebutals, it would have a totally different look. I'm sure some dealers deny things based on assumptions, but some of the posters here have reported that they got some field SOA people involved and it got worked out. I no longer get worried when I read these warranty denials on here. I sit back and wait for someone to ask the detailed questions and then we seem to learn enough to reassure me. I haven't had a problem yet - - and I drive mine like it wants/is supposed to be driven!

....or the Dodge "Hemi" truck that drag races while hauling a trailer. .....or the Chevy "like a rock" ads of old that showed their trucks being pounded through muddy fields.

Personally, I would never attempt most feats you see in these commercials nor would I expect that my car would be covered under warranty if I did.

btw, for those who may not be aware, the "0-60" times achieved in R&T, C&D, or MT are typically done with little or no consideration of the vehicle's well-being. .....attempt at your own risk.

The 0-60 times I was talking about are the ones stated in Subaru TV or magazine commercials where the 0-60 time is 5.4 for the WRX and 4.x for the STI. Try to get that from these cars a few times and you'll be posting your warranty denial story on here.

BTW, as a slight contrast, a guy blew his Z06 motor up autocrossing his Corvette and Chevy replaced the engine "no questions asked". They even knew he blew it while racing. I guess if your car is 50K or more the Manufacturers care more then our little 25K POSs.

I get a nice warm fuzzy when I climb into my "Family" car and drive everyday.

....yep, I know what you were talking about. Those times come from publications like the ones I mentioned.

......actually, mine was 23k out the door. Seriously though, if driven properly these cars can still be quick, fast and fun without worry. A fair portion of the warranty complaints I've read on these forums were typically due to improper technique and/or plain abuse. I guess some of those folks were naive enough to think they could do the outrageous things they see on TV (or hear about in magazines/on-line) with no ill-effects. .......although I suppose if I slapped down 70k+ for a Z06 my expectations may be a bit different.

Haha.. I like that, but more like:

It's like selling a lollypop to a kid and then telling them it's meant to be licked, not bitten. If they bite it, that's abuse, and it won't last as long, although it certainly can be used in that way. (They will sure enjoy it more if they bite that sucker!)

Default Engine mods and warranty

Ok, so from my understanding the 05 WRX runs extremely lean to begin with. I have an 05 WRX with a AEM short ram intake and a HKS cat back exhaust. I had a Greddy BOV (but it was removed, to be replaced by HKS) and after it was removed i noticed a knocking noise during acceleration. I want to take it to the dealer, but are they going to give me crap for these parts? THanks guys

....if you've read through this thread then you should already know the answer.

You can't be certain until you take it in, have it diagnosed, and see what they say. .....but if comes down to a warranty issue with your engine and since your modifications are engine related, I would say you should be prepared for possible bad news.
