Default What do you consider an "Explosive Device"

Ibmyass. Hahahahah

Now that the jokes are out of the way...

I read a couple of news articles about people being injured by what the police always seem to call "an illegal explosive device".

Clearly pipe bombs or homemade fireworks fall in that category.

But it made me wonder...does it have to be a pyrotechnic device? Does combustion need to be involved?

I know of ways to create an explosion that don't require combustion to occur.

Certain chemicals mixed together in a closed container will do it. Or highly compressed non-flammable gases.

Just curious.

Anything that explodes. No matter how it exploded.

Hell, an overly inflated air compressor can be an explosive device.

Dry ice bombs are fun too. And mostly harmless if you're not holding onto one.

I never asked him. I suppose I could.

He replied with, "Bought it from a company that did it themselves, no longer in business. Spud Gun Technologies."

So there you go.

I did that once with just Drano, water, and aluminum Coke can.

Watched it consume the open can from the inside out until you could see thru it.

Didn't explode obviously, but was cool to watch the painted label holding things together till it spilled out.

When in a sealed container (capped bottle) the aluminum and drano react with a tremendous amount of heat and gas. The water acts to dissolve the crystal drano and increase surface contact with the foil. Pressure builds up rapidly causing the bottle to burst and then melt.

We figured out that the explosive response time could be altered depending on the size bottle we used. 3 litre bottles take a few minutes. 1-2 oz airplane bottles could be thrown and explode within a few seconds if we were quick enough.

Pretty sure a kid lost a hand and another a foot in two such explosions in Philly over last week. The second one tore a hole in the 2nd story floor where you could see the first floor.

I know someone who had a small amount of ammonia and a small amount of bleach leftover in the laundry room. Mixed them together to get a usable amount. This resulted in a call to the fire department who said to pour it in a trash barrel and then fill it with water, otherwise they'd need to do a Hazmat call and it would get real expensive.
