So this topic is becoming more real. We've invited my parents to visit us in August. They live in coastal Oregon (very low prevalence), have been engaging in safe habits, and usually drive when they come out to visit anyway.

What we decided on is that ~3 days prior to departure both of them and both my wife and I will get COVID swab tests. Any positive result would call this off, of course, and with that time buffer then presymptomatic cases would be evident as well.

Not foolproof what with asymptomatic infections and non-100% sensitivity of testing, but I think it's reasonable.

Delta, American, KLM, EasyJet all banned alcohol on flights, so that's fun. Just another reason not to get on a plane

Delta hasn't been serving alcohol on its flights for the last 2 months. This is nothing new.

Fortunately you can still get blitzed at the Sky Club

Major airlines, in addition to strictly enforcing mask wearing on all boarding passengers, will ban ticket holders who refuse to comply and may even consider putting them on no-fly lists.

Fine with me.

Also private jet volume is soaring among customers with the money and means.

They are being nice. I believe its a felony to disobey aircrew.

I flew out of Chicago Midway for work on Wednesday. The airport was definitely a more crowded than it was a week earlier when I flew out to Baltimore. Regular security check line was pretty long, but there was no one in the Pre-Check lane. This tells me that leisure travelers have returned but business travelers (who usually have Pre Check) have not yet. Roughly 80% of people at the airport were wearing a mask.
The Southwest 737-700 was almost full, with all of the middle seats being left empty while a week earlier, there were only 38 people on the plane.
I am flying back home today.
To me, it is safer to fly across the country rather than doing a road trip. It is pretty easy to do social distancing at airports and it helps that middle seats are blocked and most planes aren't full yet. At a road trip you have to stop at gas stations, restrooms, restaurants multiple times and it's harder to social distance in those places.

CNBC piece comes to conclusion that air fares will increase as the only way to make up for lost revenue for the foreseeable future

My work has begun to allow me to travel. Every job has to be approved in advance, over-nights are strongly discouraged and flights are a non-starter. I'm based in MD, and most of my work covers PA/NJ/NY.

With everything blowing up, I'm expecting them to pull the plug on us again soon.

I was contemplating this a couple months ago. On one hand, I could see the following benefit: New rates could be cost prohibitive for some, thus leading to significantly fewer passengers on flights. (I'm ok with this.) On the other hand, they've already decreased service by massive amounts. I could see the fewer flights being more crowded simply because of ticket scarcity. (This would suck - which we've already seen with the craptacular American big three.)

The Mrs is hyper paranoid of planes currently so I don't see us flying for quite some time. Aside from any potential absolutely necessary business flights, I'll be on the highways for quite some time.

So we are doing this.

MIL visiting from Seattle in about a week. She will drive out, staying overnight in a motel with touchless app check in.

Then second week of August my parents are coming out. They’ll be driving from Oregon as usual. We dropped the testing requirement for everyone since my sister was being a pain in the ass (not atypical for her), plus it wouldn’t really change risk as my parents are staying with her for a week first. It’ll be like a mini quarantine of sorts, and any presymptomatic infections would declare themselves over that period.

In the meantime I’m ok with my own habits (work, grocery, take out, mountain biking with masks for the first three when not alone in my office), as I’ve tested negative x 1 via PCR and negative serology x 3 (Quest self pay, through work as they surveyed us all, and via blood donation). What I’m doing is good enough given the population around here, apparently.

The current list of nations that will accept US passport holders:

Spoilers: the list is small... Like barely over a dozen.

I was planning on going to Croatia in September, but that'll have to wait.

MIL has stated that she's ok with us flying back to Seattle for winter break. This is good, IMO, since driving would be a pain in the ass, not to mention potentially volatile weather in that season.

Our plan: occupy 1A-1B, 2A-2B. Board last. Masks on whole time. Get at least adults tested once in Seattle and don't interact with those other than MIL until those results come back.

I was hoping to do my annual trip to France in February (my next vacation), but, with the direction France is headed, I will probably have to think twice even if Europe opens its borders.

(In France, children under 11 don't need to wear masks... and they've resumed school in most regions...)

I am at O'Hare this morning flying to Memphis for work. It's definitely busier than it was in May, but it's not nearly as busy as a typical Monday morning would be pre COVID-19.

I'm sure you know that a test immediately getting off the plane won't do any good. if you were infected, it would take a few days for there to be enough virus for a test to do anything.

hell, if you're only there for a few days, and you got exposed on the way out there, you probably wouldn't even be able to get others sick until after you got back.

either way, wait about 3-4 days to get tested.

Parents traveling for vacay again in a week or two - they are being required to take Covid tests and provide results to the foreign government prior to travel.

some friends went to Aruba a few weeks ago.

you either take a nasal covid test 72 hours prior to getting into country, or you take a test when you land, and it's 6-8 hours wait for results can't leave the airport while waiting.

After having a job requiring tons of travel for work + seeing how the average American is an idiot there is no way I'm getting on a plane for the foreseeable future. Anywhere I go is gonna be by car.

not sure Aruba is caring so much about what you catch while you are there, they just want to be as reasonably assured as they can that you don't bring it in with you.

I flew PHX-MDW last week and will fly MDW-PHX tommorrow. It really wasn't that bad. Southwest was pretty strict with the masks.

Let's see...anyone obviously ill won't be allowed on the plane.

Anyone who is on the plane should be wearing a mask.

So right there, the chances of my getting the inevitable cold are at least an order of magnitude lower.

Every single goddam international flight I was on last year, the person seated next to me sniffled, coughed, hacked, and wheezed the entire flight. Every. Single. Time.
