Aaaannnnddd... The issue is that Gigabyte sucks. Apparently it's an undocumented feature! They scramble the contents of their CMOS every now and then so you have to pull the CMOS battery, unplug the computer, let it sit for a couple minutes and put the battery back in. This strangely isn't in any of their marketing materials. Discovered it in a forum. Sure enough, it starts now. ****ers. Now I get to ****ing setup the god damned BIOS again.

Knowing that I won't be shooting for top of the line any time soon how much of a diff is it going to make waiting a few months for the newer cards? I am looking at spending right around the 500$ mark, I know three months from now I could probably get this card for a bit less or maybe a bit better of a card at this price point but are we talking a large leap?

Waiting always nets a better deal but I don't wanna put it off too far, my kid may just die if I tell him to wait and shelling out twice isn't attractive either.

I appreciate the input!

I think this is the die shrink, as well as a process shrink, I'm planning on a decent jump. Price brackets shouldn't jump up either.

Especially with an extra cycle to integrate whatever tensor and RT cores are.

Not likely a 9-10 series size jump but, better than 10-20?

Oh I think I heard about that and, I'd probably want to return it.

Not going to be fun doing that over the lifetime. Hopefully they can fix it in an update?

Maybe check the tiny wire running from the switch to the MB plug. It may have been pinched during shipping or install and is shorting.

Yeah, it's back up now. I discovered this issue in their forums. It's not even platform or chipset dependent. It's a gigabyte issue. The CMOS gets screwed up so you have to remove the battery and wait for the capacitors to drain.

There's already supposed leaks of 3070 and 3070ti at the 4-500 price point matching (beating?) The 2080ti with RTX on. There's a potential dedicated RTX processing unit or something.

It'll definitely be a better value than any RTX cards available now.

in all honesty i've had only one issue with Gigabyte over the years. it was on an ancient Z77 build, before usb3.0 was spec'd out. system ran fine till i tried to run an Oculus Rift. system ran fine til i had the rift running and then plugged in my wheel/pedals.

it completely killed all usb comms. no mouse, no keyboard, no nothing.

that box was built circa '12 and is still running, doing network monitoring et al.

I didn’t graphics card, but I still might. Has an older 980ti I planned to use till maybe Christmas.

I will not go back and look at prices after we get back to “normal”, I’m sure I paid too much for some things but the birthday is coming soon.
I went ahead and ordered a graphics card just so everything was fresh and new. Gigabyte rx 5700 xt, not super expensive and should cover what he does for a while.

After some debate I think I will do a little digging to see what card would be a nice upgrade to my 2016 PC and buy something in that range to get the new PC by until the new GTX cards drop. It won't feel as much like a waste of money being as the card will be an upgrade for the hand-me-down PC, my kid will be happy for an 'upgrade'.

Thanks for the heads up. Anyone have a card laying around that would be an upgrade over an R9 390 on an Asus Z97a MB with a 4790k cpu?

My rift S was funny till I put it on a powered USB hub and that resolved things.. after reboot it was never coming active on its own and I was stuck doing the unplug/plug dance.

If you have a z97 and a 4790k, overclock and just buy a new GPU when the new ones drop. IMO you've made it this far . I'm holding out until DDR5.

Its an interesting issue because it occurs occasionally across all their recent boards, doesn't matter if it's Intel or AMD chipset high end or budget. It doesn't happen frequently from what I read but it was kind of a pain in the ass diagnosing it till I remembered that thread I stumbled across. Overall, it's an OK board when it isn't scaring the **** out of me.

I would but adding a second PC is the catalyst, we decided to build now so my 12YO son can use the z97 4790k setup. While discussing the details over the 4th his grandmother(my mother) offered up some money to get me in a new rig so he could have mine. She'll be pestering me on whether he is all set sooner rather than later.

We will eventually upgrade the z97 rig but it does everything he wants right now between Snowrunner, No Man's Sky, HotS, Minecraft, Civilization and similar titles.

Hah, my 12 year old inheriting my PC is what pushed me into building a new machine.

I probably would have ran this PC as-is until it either failed or Win10 support ended, whichever came last.

He uses this machine when I'm at work and uses my laptop when I'm using the Desktop. The laptop is getting a lot more wear from him banging it around but there is only so many ****s I can get him to give.

maybe? never tried a powered hub as every time i plugged my G25 in with the Rift, it killed all USB. hard reset was needed to bring the ports back, and they died yet again if i didn't pull the rift or wheel when windows booted up.

I think I will take you up on that, easier to feel good about a used card from a 'reputable' source than a rando on craigslist.

That's a good deal. I think I paid $300 or so for my GTX 1080 used from a buddy that got the 2080

Sub $300 is a solid deal on a 1080. I paid around that for a B stock 1070 from EVGA a while back.
