Hood Louvers for Decreased Engine Bay Temps
Hey folks,
Just wanted to share something that I did last weekend that seemed to improve my intake temps at idle and while cruising quite a bit. Background: Here in Florida, it's pretty common to see intake temps well over 110*F with a cold air intake. Hit a stop light? Well, now you're over 120*F. I'm running a GTX3576 Gen II turbo which obviously generates quite a bit of heat when you get on it. A local shop recommended a few things to get my temps down since most of the time I'm running 93 octane fuel. I did some research for a while and found some hood vents that seem to actually make a big difference, so I wanted to share that information with others. A quick note before I share: this is NOT a daily driver car for me. It's basically my evening "rip it" car which will be going to the track and occasionally to a drag strip. Here's what they look like installed: These are from Race Louvers and are their "RT" model. A bit more aggressive than their "RS" (street) version, but not as crazy as the "RX" model. At idle, I noticed roughly a 10*F drop in temps, and observed that the temp didn't rise quite as quickly at idle. When I'm driving it hard on the road, I never see temps over 95*F. Before, the temps would easily get up to 105*F when ripping around. Anywho, thought I'd share my findings with others that are considering similar mods. I'll be tightening up the ducting around my FMIC and the radiator next. I also installed an undertray to help keep air traveling upwards and out of the vents.

Guys on Facebook Track Subies Group are familiar with Race Louvers and some of the other vendors. Works wonders. You should see the hood and louver setup on the autocross car Sumaire owned by Devin Ramsey.

Did a quick Google search but wasn't able to find a picture of his setup. Interested to see tho! I was thinking about putting a vent in the middle, right behind the radiator, like the WRC cars. Gotta find something that looks decent and fits the 05 tho lol.

I read it as air temp. Should have put my glasses on
As for Oil / water temps, I don't really think that the hood louvers will account for any real temp drops for oil & water. For that, it's better radiator cooling and/or oil cooler Last edited by Samurai Jack; 07-11-2020 at 11:03 PM. |
