Default WRX Steering Wheel Completely Detached

Has this ever happened to anyone? 2016 Subaru WRX Limited, was driving out of a parking lot at work and my steering wheel completely snapped and lost control of the front wheels. It was loose and wobbly earlier on about an hour before but then I parked and got back in to drive it and it disconnected all together. A plethora of warning lights came on and I needed to have the car towed on a flat bed to the dealer. SA is diagnosing what happened but I am a bit shocked and shook up about how bad that could have been. I purchased a gold plus warranty when buying the car as a CPO a few years ago and this should absolutely be covered but haven’t gotten a word back from SA yet. Wheel can essentially spin 360 degrees for as long as anyone wants without moving the wheels currently. I’ll try to figure out how to post the video I got when it happened as the app isn’t letting me.

Previous owner probably had an aftermarket wheel and did a ***** job reinstalling the factory one

Just glad you're alright. As the other person responding mentioned. The steering wheel was probably replaced or swapped out at some point and reinstalled incorrectly.

This might be the most bizarre issue that I have read on this forum.

If you bought it CPO and have extended warranty, they should take care of you. Even if the steering was replaced and reinstalled incorrectly as a couple of people mentioned, its Subaru's problem not yours. Good luck and do post updates.
