Tranny Cooler
Does anyone have a installation guide, kind of a step-by-step DIY for installing a tranny cooler? My Hayden 403 came in and I have a rough idea of what goes where but I would like to make sure. I couldn't fit the thread submitted by SuperRu a WHILE back.

There are a couple of ways to hook up the ATF lines, you can either incorporate the existing trans cooler lines running to the radiator or have your aftermarket cooler be the sole source of cooling. I ran my lines using the existing radiator cooler. What you want to do is locate the lines coming off the radiator. They are towards the bottom of the radiator and start to make their way back to the trans on the driver's side. The 2 rubber lines are connected to hard lines that run back to the trans. You will want to tap into the back one, it is the return line. Put a barbed connector on the oem rubber line joining your new cooler line and connect your other rubber hose from your new cooler to the hard line. The easiest place I found to mount the cooler was on the driver's side in front of the radiator. My cooler is mounted so the inlet and outlets are horizontal, putting the cooler on it's side. You'll want to put the line coming from the radiator routed to the line on the top of the cooler so it flows easier and the bottom cooler line will be the one hooked up to the hard line. Good luck!

Its a very easy mod. The hardest part was just finding a mounting point. I just splice into the tranny return line to the OEM tranny cooler. The hot fluid gets cooled at the OEM cooler first then travels the aftermarket one for further cooling, then back to tranny.
If your WRX is a manual...a cooler isn't that necessary. Auto trannies get way HOTTER. |

Your radiator actually functions as the OEM transmission cooler in the automatic. On the bottom of the radiator, below the fan shroud, you should see a metal heatshield. If laying down underneath of the car with feet pointing out from under the front bumper, you should be able to see it. To the left of this you should see TWO hardlines coming from the back of the chassis; these terminate into two rubber hoses that go down into the radiator, behind the heatshield. These are your transmission fluid lines from the tranny to the radiator and from the radiator to the tranny. These are small OD hoses, it would be hard to confuse them with the actual radiator hoses coming to and from the block, but don't confuse them...if you pull the lower radiator hose that goes to the pump you'll have coolant allllll over yourself.
You can either put the cooler into this circuit, or bypass it completely. I suggest putting the transmission cooler BEFORE the radiator. What this does is keep the OEM coolers HEATING capability (you want this!). If you notice, when cold the transmission won't upshift out of 3rd. When warm enough it will shift into 4th; this is governed by the transmission cooler integral to the radiator. So essentially, you cool the transmission fluid before it gets to the radiator, and if it's TOO cold the stock cooler will heat it up. As to figuring out which one of those two lines is TO/FROM, I don't recall. I mounted my transmission cooler onto the a/c condenser with these straps that came with mine. I routed the hoses along the top of the bumper/grill opening near the hood release latch and between the lower and upper openings to keep it "clean" looking. EDIT: Here's an install guide from Scoobymods for a Legacy; it's essentially the same thing. http://www.scoobymods.com/transmissi...cys-t5500.html Download that attached .pdf as the linked site is now dead. |

Check out my earlier post #3. The return line is the hard line that is closest to the cabin. And fwiw I have my cooler after the radiators cooler, I'm not too worried about the trans not being warm enough, it doesn't take too long to get warmed up. Last edited by Rez1138; 03-23-2011 at 01:42 AM. |

Like I said, my cooler's the first thing behind the grill. It doesn't take any longer very long to warm up. You could always use some cardboard to cover it when you start driving and take it off when the transmission is warm.

Newbie resurrecting an old thread (just bought an Impreza and trying to play catch up and make improvements).
When installing an additional external oil cooler, do you add the volume of tranny fluid that the cooler and hoses will accept and add that to the tranny to maintain level/temperature? any pics avail that shows the hard lines on the tranny? i am planning on replacing my oem rad with a dual core aluminum for a manual transmission rad. so i am going to install a trans cooler. ive never done this before but it seems like it would be very easy to do. someone who knows what the heck they are doing should do a write up with pics. we are the few and the proud 4eat...ok maybe not so proud cus we all would rather be driving a manual transmission lol just kidding

It doesn't really matter, there's only 1 place for the fluid to go and there aren't any check valves. Be sure to get those clamps on there correctly.
