HELP Cam cap oil clearance
Hey guys i have recently started to reassemble the motor in 2006 STI and have become stumped. When installing my cams the intake and exhaust cam on the left head spin freely and nice, however the intake cam and exhaust cam on the right head do not spin as well. Thou they do spin by hand, they do not spin nearly as well as the left side. I have moved the right side cams to the left side and vise versa, the problem appears to be in the right head. Does anybody happen to have oil clearance specs for the cams? They are b25 heads.

Could you have mixed up the cam cap order? Did you verify they are still in order and oriented correctly (pointing in correct direction)? There is a good bit of clearance, should be super easy to turn if there is a little lube.

Yea everything seems to be correct but they are definitely tighter then the other side. I am guessing i may need to get the journals line honed but i am not sure what the clearance specs are.
Yeah i would like to get a line hone too as well in my camshaft journals....but if the machinist gets it wrong/ off center angle and points the camshaft off to a slight angle your cam gears will not hold your timing belt in place correctly causeing wear and maybe even cause the belt to protrude out a tiny bit past the camgears.

2 factors will cause u to have hard free hand spin on your camshaft....wear on your camshaft journals or incorrect cam caps mixed up... i wont say incorrect camshaft mix up because its hard to mix up camshafts and u seem pritty switched on...double check cam caps with factory manual or online pics to confirm... also make sure each camshaft have similar amount of oil to perform your test agian |

What torque specs did you use? I read that some shop manuals had different values.

I am using the same torque specs and cam cap order on both sides. I have double and triple checked. My verdict so far is the clearance is too tight. However i need specs to confirm. I believe there was some warping in the head due to the head gasket failure. I have talked with the machine shop and a line bore is the only chance of saving the head.

If they are the original cams and you've installed the caps correctly, makes sense a head is tweaked. I didn't know there was overheating.

in my gr i have noticed the same thing, it appears the right hand side is underalot more tension compared to the left hand side...basically sounds normal even though i know the cams all have to compress the springs just the same...was a little odd to me too when i first took my ej apart lol
