Default Best turbo option to replace tf035

Currently have the small TF035 that came with my JDM EJ205. I'm looking to upgrade the Turbo and was thinking TD04 but since I can't find a good price on one I figured I might as well go with a VF series but I'm not sure which one.

Will I need a new downpipe to fit a VF? Which VF is the best option for slight power gains, not looking for monster power.

Any other info I should know?

Assuming it's a standard ej fitment, your best bet is a VF34 / VF 39 / VF48. THE 39 and 48 are OEM turbos on the USDM STi (EJ257). These turbos are a direct bolt on replacement.

YOU WILL NEED LARGER INJECTORS, A FUEL PUMP AND PROPER ENGINE MANAGEMENT IF YOU RUN THESE TURBOS, AS WELL AS X FULL EXHAUST.

Direct replacement would be a TD04L 13T. These can be found in the classified section here pretty easily and would require no further modifications.

Please do your research before installing anything larger than a TD04L.

Yeah I assumed larger injectors/Fuel pump and I have a tuner who does E tuning for my vehicle. I might stick with the TD04 though since I'm not trying to push massive power since it's my daily.

Skip the vf series unless you go vf22, find yourself a good big 16g. It will give you more leeway with making more power easier and still will have good pull throughout the power band

Will a 16g bolt up to the stock DP of a 2.0 Forester?

Vf48s are good turbos on the 2.0L.

Can be bought for cheap, brings a little more power but keeps that “Daily” reliability.

I bought mine from a member here, used, just north of 400$.

Good luck on your turbo shopping!

I drive two different cars.
Daily driver:
05 wrx wagon with a JDM ej205, functional avcs, TD04HL turbo, WRX 5 speed drive line, tuned.
Toy driver:
02 wrx sedan with a JDM ej207, functional avcs, VF48 turbo, STi 6 speed driveline, tuned.

Both are fun to drive.
The smaller TD04HL turbo is perfect for the daily driver. Since I also use the wagon for long distance travel to visit family in Missouri I appreciate the 28-29mpg. Throttle response is very quick even in 5th gear at 2800 rpm, no lag.
The VF48 on the toy car is a small stock STi turbo but makes more power than the TD04HL. Consumes more fuel and offers very different driving dynamics. Taking off from first gear it is stronger all the way to redline. In 6th gear cruising 70mph at about 3300rpm it still can’t match the responsiveness of the TD04HL, it lags. If I down shift from 6th to 4th gear and step on the gas then it’s a very different story. If I keep it in 5th gear at 3800rpm then the throttle is much more responsive because I’m on boost at that point.
I would imagine the TF35 would be a very responsive little turbo but not very powerful and fall off sooner than a TD04.
The vf48 on my ej207 builds strong power to about 7000rpm and falls off, not worth pushing to the 8000rpm redline.
The TD04HL on my ej205 builds strong power to about 6000rpm and falls off, not worth pushing to the 7000rpm redline.
I’m glad I don’t have to choose one over the other, good luck with your decision.

go big or go home... I have a 2.1 with v9 heads with a gtx3071 gen 2 on a spoolinator I just took a trip to Santa Barbara and got 27mpg, but with a bigger turbo you have to be mindoful about how you drive. but its really not that bad people make a bigger deal out of it than it really is
