braking issues with a 1998 legacy gt?
well i'm in the midst of selling my car and downsizing to something in the 10-15k range (preferrably closer to the 10k). i came across an automatic 1998 gt w/ 56k miles and the dealer is asking 11k for it. the engine, body and interior look to be in very good condition. i test drove it and the engine and trans felt as if it were taken care of. however the brakes felt like crap. there was a pulsating vibration that came through the pedal and steering column when braking. i checked the pads and there seemed to be plenty left. i asked the dealer if there was record of the brakes being done and he said that they were just completed prior to the trade-in. i'm not quite sure what it cold be...possibly warped rotors? any thoughts?

Warped rotors will cause the feeling you're describing. Early Chevy Malibus did this a lot and I had quite a few scary rentals that would shimmy pretty badly.
It's consistent, right? It always shakes on the brake (at least at moderate speeds)? |

If you really want the car, tell them to replace the pads and rotors before you will buy it. If they don't want to then they don't want your money.

Haven't really heard of any problems that have plagued the BD/BG Legacy's specifically, so I would agree with Yotsuya's estimation of the situation.
The least the dealer could do is turn down the rotors. That wouldn't even take too much time and effort, but we know how much dealers go that extra mile... If you end up picking it up, have fun with the trademark Subaru mush-brakes. I'd wager that stainless lines might be in your future. Out of curiosity, what color was it? AnthonyG |

thanks for the feedback. the car is at a jaguar dealership and the salesperson said that they would fix it if i were to buy it. without selling my car first i can't afoord to pick it up right now. hopefully it is still there in a week or two when i get the $ for mine
anthony, i know about the subaru mushy brakes...ss lines may be the first things i do with new rotors and pads. the car is black. i missed out on an awesome silver one with 16k miles on it at Gerlad Subaru a couple weeks back. it was going for $12k |
