Default Buying cheap used struts to install Koni Yellows...

So, I recently ordered the 11-14 koni yellow wrx inserts and I thought it might be a good idea to keep my OEM struts as backups incase I fudge up the install.

So I found a complete set of used struts online for $80 total, really good deal, but the catch is that one of the front struts is leaking. Seller claims they aren't bent or damaged, and I plan on thoroughly inspecting them when I see them in person.

My question is, since the inserts are just using the strut housing, how bad of an idea would it be to install the konis on leaking oem struts? I'm not sure what the most common reason for strut leakage is and if that would affect the integrity of the housing. I kind of assume they must be leaking near the seals and all of that gets ripped out during install anyway.

If there's a hole in the outside housing, then obviously it would be a no-go, but what do you guys think?

If they are leaking due to a score on the shaft or a blown out seal this is of no concern to you.

if they are leaking due to being bent (and lifting a side on the seal which would be a TON of bend) or due to a crack in the body then pass.

I would put them on your old struts...what you have to worry about is bottoming out the shock and matched spring/rebound rates...if its not quite right it will make the car handle worse

It should be fine. If it's leaking its more likely seal failure from dirt intrusion. You're going to gut them anyway, so it shouldn't effect it any

yeah, I've decided to go this route, seems silly to install my new inserts on potentially faulty struts, I'm sure it would probably be fine, but I want to make sure, I can always get replacement struts if I mess up the install
