Default Inline fuel filter; still need fuel dampers?

2006 forester xt. Swapped in ej257; vf48

Hello all, i noticed last week while replacing a worn out walbro fuel pump with an AEM one that there was absolutely no fuel filter in the fuel pump housing. None in the engine bay either. So since i purchased my car 2 years ago and 30k miles later, no fuel filter.

I have not had/ suffered any adverse affects as of yet. Car pulls hard, no misfire etc. Im going to be purchasing an inline fuel filter, sorta like the ones the Golan products or Fuellab offer.

In the engine bay, both on the incoming and return fuel lines there are oem fuel dampers (the round black thing). If i install the inline fuel filter, should i just not use the fuel damper on the incoming fuel line where the fuel filter will go? Or stick with the fuel damper and fuel filter all in one line? Please advise thanks.

The filter is the screen or sock attached at the bottom of the pump housing. That's all Subaru has used since they did away with inline filters in most models around 2003

The oem filter on the newer models is between the pump output and the fuel hanger fitting. The pump inlet sock on bottom is only for larger particles, to keep the pump from being damaged. Definitely make sure you use a filter on the output side...either right after the pump or in the engine compartment. The injectors have internal screens, but those will only last so long before being clogged. I would leave the dampers.

This is the style that was used up to 2007/8 https://www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-2002-20...UAAOSweqJbKWVy

The sock on the fuel pump housing just filter out big items i believe 30 microns or more, from entering fuel pump and damaging it. Thats not a fuel filter per se.

Those screens on the injectors are a pita just remove them and throw them right in the trash. Similar to the junk banjo bolt filters on the avcs lines. Great for a first start up of a build or assembly however.

I'd keep the pulse dampers if at all possible. The car will run without them and may even feel fine, but your fuel system will get noisier. The real question is how bad the resonances get and if it's enough to impact AFR. I had leanout issues on account of pulse dampers and a nasty fuel system resonance, but that was with big injectors in OEM rails so YMMV.

^^if its just a matter of reducing noise then I'll get rid of them.

The dampers are there to dampen the pressure waves when the injectors open and close. The fpr and filter alone act as a damper. They're only there because the filter is in the tank and not in the engine bay. Like on an older wrx.

Not for reducing audible noise, but fuel pressure pulsation.

Ok, if the in line fuel filter (besides filtering) acts as a damper then ill go that route, end the redundancy and not use the fuel damper when i add the filter.

It most certainly does! Same for the regulator.

Late update but i installed the 'in-line fuel filter' nearly a month ago. Didn't not use a damper on the same line as where the fuel filter is. To date no adverse affects.
Car is purring like a kitten.

I have a 05 FXT converted to inline fuel filter, removed dampers on the engine bay side. No issues for the past 8 years.
