i've only ridden trails with the shimano steps 8000 setup https://www.shimano-steps.com/e-bike...nformation/mtb and i can say its pretty seamless. There's been a number of firmware updates in the past few months that made things much better. I think i have around 100 miles of riding on it as of last week.

From what i hear the bosch is slightly janky, but cannot tell you first hand.

Renting this thing from Commencal's Golden HQ on Friday June 15. That'd be a Commencal Meta Power Essential 650B+ Mango 2018, to be specific.

I'm planning on doing at least a long loop at White Ranch with it.

Sidebar. Commencal used to be close to us. i picked up a Meta 20 for the boy a year or two ago. He loved the bike, but outgrew it. Paige is now riding it around.

Nice. They moved out here in April, iirc.

Cheaterbike ride yesterday. Friend on my second cheaterbike. we were laughing all the way. Running full boost mode the whole time. Said it still had 20 is miles of range left.

He's the manager of my LBS. said the bosch setup will cut power if you use the rear brakes. Might want to double check on that. I could see that being a deal breaker.

I'm not a MTB guy so I don't really care, but I know people get pissed off if you upload an e-bike ride as a regular ride and not as an "e-bike ride."

I don't have any KOMs to steal so it doesn't piss me off.

Strava app? Do you need to fit anything on the bike or is this just using your phone's built in GPS?

I forgot to "end" my Strava ride once before driving home and I got like 4 KOM on road sections on the way. I received multiple really nasty messages from the real KOM and some other riders. If they asked nicely or just weren't ******** about it I would have gladly edited my activity but I just left it. After a couple weeks Strava (I guess) edited it for me but not before those douchebags probably had rage breakdowns.

You can use a phone. There are also wearable GPS devices that will get your rides to Strava.

Anyone have good recommendations on an e-bike conversion kit?

More importantly, I think I want to splurge more on a battery that is more aesthetically compact like the ones that take up a water bottle holder vs the ones that look like a shelf on the seat post.

Motor wise, I don't know what I really need want, I'll just take the easy route with a front wheel mounted unit. But I am partial to good looking thumb controls, or heck, even some sort of app integrated system with a phone? Showing battery life and/or speed, etc.

If I can build this as a "kit," and upgrade over time, that would be nice too. e.g. Ok motor, decent battery, add smart controls or better controls later, I'm okay with that.

This will all go into a circa 2005 or so Mongoose "Rockadile" I got from walmart or Target.

What's their rental rate? Also no demos, must rent?

The Commencal looks like one of the better ones. Certainly has some good components and geometry looks good.

When I built up bikes in the past I used parts from ebikes.ca. Their CycleAnalyst is a great display.

$90/day. Couldn't find demo days listed although I'm sure there will be some here and there. Just as well so as to have the trails less busy on a Friday instead of fighting half of Colorado on the weekend.

I bike commute on a pedal power-only bike (a quite nice belt drive one that I built, but I digress <-- that's how you use that word, OT).

Anyway, out of curiosity back in January 2017 I emailed the powers that be that control my commute route, the Sand Creek Greenway, to inquire whether e-bikes are legal or not as I'd been seeing them pop up more and more. Then answer then was legal in Denver on the paved surface portions and not legal in Aurora or Commerce City regardless of surface type, iirc. (As one might gather this greenway passes between several cities, each with their own rules, and has both paved and dirt/gravel sections.)

I emailed the respective parties again today to see if anything has changed what with the April 2017 state legislation laying out e-bike categories, etc. We shall see what they say, or whether my email causes them to take note of the law and reassess their positions.

Update: No changes.

Next Friday is the day. Not sure what the exact ride plan is yet. Could be as simple as doing a long version of my normal loops or doing a mammoth day, basically stringing together 3.5 individual rides on adjacent mountains.

I had a good time out on the Commencal today despite riding it 95% of the time in Eco Mode, which is ~50% torque multiplier extrapolating from Bosch's figures. (I had to do this because Commencal didn't have their **** together and didn't charge any of the demo bikes overnight. I started out the day with 3/5 bars and ended the day with 1/5 after 2400+ feet of ascent.)

Pros:

- Eco Mode was great for riding with non-electrified buddies, and they were good sports
- good climbing traction, and indeed I cleared a few sections I typically don't clear
- competent enough downhill

Cons:

- ugly, heavy, conspicuous even in all black as was my demo
- motor is audible albeit not annoying--akin to a small brushless RC motor's noise levels
- whether due to weight, weight distribution, chainstay length, or all of the above, really tough to get the front wheel up

Verdict: I see why people like them. Today was a good day of riding, and it couldn't be farther from the case that I was just sitting back and letting the thing pull me along. Hell, I only used about 50 Wh per hour, which shows that its average output wasn't tremendous by any means. Were I to get one I'd want one that feels more playful and is lighter, but the good news is that such options should exist in this somewhat mature market.

Video from the ride coming today or tomorrow.

Nice review.
I'm really happy with my haro's.
You might want to try the Shimano setups. Do you have it for another day? Bummer they didnt charge it all the way.

They’re a M-F shop and I am tied up this weekend so just that day. Commencal uses Shimano STEPS—I just cited Bosch since Bosch publishes their torque multipliers but Shimano keeps ‘em a mystery.

Really starting to appreciate the ebike at the end of my rides when my legs are sore from 20 miles of zero assistance. The last 3 miles I turn it on and get to my car cooled down and the sweat is dried off. Especially when I'm carrying this little guy on my back:
