Default No bueno!! Subaru Specialties (Scott Dana Boyd)

Dearest forum members,

I recently had an extremely poor dealing regarding a Subaru engine rebuild/ replacement for one of my Legacy GT's. As it turns out Scott has a history of ripping people off. This thread serves as my warning to you.....save yourself the hassle and go elsewhere.

The offender's name is Subaru Specialties/ Scott Dana Boyd operating out of the greater Lowell, Mass area.

My CL ad has been copied below for your reference.

Dear reader,
If you are considering using "Subaru Specialties" or "Dana", the person who wrote the ad I've copied below, consider looking elsewhere.

My story goes like this:

--I signed a contract with "Dana" to have my Legacy engine rebuilt in May 2017.

--My car was picked up right away and my deposit for an engine rebuild was immediately cashed.

--My car then disappeared for 3 months and communication from "Dana" was very poor as to the whereabouts of my car and exactly when I'd have my car returned to me.

--Several trips to his house and 4 months after the fact, I was finally able to pick my car up...via trailer and without a thing being done to the car. To add insult to injury, my car sustained damage while in his possession.

--After numerous attempts to reach him by phone and text, I took the hour-plus ride to his house once again. Luckily he was there and so I arranged an agreement for him to simply build me an engine and I would handle the rest. At that point I asked him to sign a new agreement which put a timeframe on the job. The terms of that agreement expired on October 8, 2017.

--The time has come and gone for my engine or my money to be returned and "Dana" has stopped picking up his phone and responding to my messages now that I'm asking for my money yet he is still advertising on CL, hence this posting.

--As of January 2, 2018 his newest posting now has an additional paragraph mentioning that he is no longer handling the installs as he has a “pissed off customer...[who] would rather not resolve the issue amicably…”. As I can only imagine that paragraph has to do with me, him stating that could not be any further from the truth. I have been exceptionally patient and still continue to contact “Dana” at least once a month in a continued attempt to resolve this amicably. Simply put, he is not responding to any of my messages nor is he making an attempt to correct this issue in any way.

And since he has decided to play games up to this point and not make any effort to resolve this, I would encourage you, the reader, to start doing some research based on the information I have attached to this post. All sorts of public information out there.

Right now this is looking like it will be handled through the court system. Please feel free to contact me if you are having a similar issue. I can't imagine I'm the only one.
EDIT: After a few months of my post going up and being renewed on CL, it turns out I am not the only one. The details of those other issues aren’t important. What is important is that “Dana” has a long history of shady dealings.

Of call the quality shops in New England to go to, why would you choose a random guy off CL? It sucks man but unfortunately I doubt you'll end up getting anything out of this. You have a guy who works out of a house with a name you're not even sure of. I wish you luck, unfortunately has been an expensive learning experience.

Fair question.

"Random guy off CL" has a ton of knowledge regarding these engines. During the hours of conversation we had leading up to the job, there was no indication I would experience an issue. Add to that and a guy building engines out of a shed isn't scary to me. I've built my own engines in sheds and they were fine. He struck me as someone who did this as a hobby and to suppliment income.

The reason I put "Dana" in quotes is because, I surmise, he's using his middle name to skirt any meaningful name search. It was only after payment was sent that I discovered his colorful history once I learned his real name.

Update:

Claims hearing was today. Give you one guess who didn't show. So, Default Finding entered.

The court has acknowledged my cash losses and I have 10 business days to submit evidence of the damage done to my car while in Scott's care. The court will then decide the appropriate amount I am to be compensated.

Up next? Payment schedule hearing.

It's great when the courts work as they should. I hope you get all your money back and your car fixed. Unfortunately we can never reclaim our time lost

The car will be sorted out in due time however I highly doubt my money is coming back but I will still take great pleasure in using every available resource to disrupt his life until I am satisfied...which might be a while because I can become quite displeased when people lie to me and to add to that, take my money.

That all said, if you are reading this and care to take the time, I'd be grateful if his CL posts were flagged. He hasn't posted in a month or so and, coincidentally enough soon after the small claims hearing, he's advertising again!

If you're asking for my help, I'd say you can either continue listening to his BS or start taking action.

You may want to adjust for timing before you file your complaint. Please note that he is attempting to claim bankruptcy and is blaming me for all of it.....which is funny because I seem to recall 3 months' worth of my phone calls not being returned with an additional 2 months passing before I filed my claim.

Then there was the reason he gave the court for not appearing for the first court date......in jail in VT on "bogus charges". So, this guy does nothing wrong yet the world seems out to get him!

Payment schedule hearing was last week, he showed up with the aforementioned bankruptcy paperwork filled out however no docket number was issued at that time. Because of the lack of a docket number I knew this could go a few ways so I went on to state to the court that he is still advertising engines as "in stock, ready to deliver" and I may be interested in one of those engines as payment.

The magistrate sent us downstairs to the judge and while in the hallway he starts to apologise to me. I politely explained to him that he's not sorry and he owes me my money.

His response? "This is happening because of your attitude. You ruined the company."

I very clearly stated "You owe me money."

"That's not going to happen."

Upon my request for a financial affidavit, obviously he claims he has nothing and cannot repay me and, quite honestly, I have zero interest in his products. The court system is doing the heavy lifting now. Judge continued the hearing for 30 days so he has time to complete the bankruptcy filing process.

And to my amazement, he actually tried to file a restraining order against me while court was in recess. I say "tried" because I believe it was rejected.

So, if anyone has trouble with getting their money back or a product, it's apparently all my fault that he continually makes poor decisions.

No worries, I have a "contract" that he signed and wrote down his license number etc etc. In my favor I had all of that and gave it to the police and the court system. They told me that I was very fortunate to have had that. I filed a month or so ago and I have my court date. I will not back down! He will then have to pay for all of these court fees and I will fight tooth and nail to make sure he NEVER does this to anyone else. My car still sits since March and all I can do is wash it . For someone to take money from a family with 2 young kids and knows I did not have that money and I gave some trust to him is beyond me. 3 months for my car to sit and I still pay for the lovely insurance and car payment feels great....

If you are reading this and have a small claims case against Scott, consider appealing the bankruptcy claim.

In my mind the court needs to hear that he's "bankrupt" from ripping people off and nothing more.

LOL

I owe you a beer, Jack, and appreciate your participation in this matter.

Coincidentally, from what I've seen, he has not advertised the "high performance 2.5 turbo" engine since I last inquired about it in court. Funny how things advertised as "in stock ready to deliver" are suddenly unavailable when it gets real.

Default Scott Dana Boyd

I’m happy to see actions have been taken against this guy I see his add is up again and he has even gone to a few shops that do business with me try to sell them engines. I first found out about his dirty dealings from a dealership that took a call from someone he ripped off saying that I took a deposit on a engine Some how this person thought Scott Dana Boyd and I where the same person just a FYI I don’t take deposits on the engines I build for my customers so if someone asks you for a deposit on a engine order just know it’s not me or anyone associated with NCIS Services. I don’t understand how this guy can still be running ads and stealing people’s money thanks for starting this post I’m sure it has saved a lot of people from getting ripped off also. So the bankruptcy dimissals are indeed final!!

After obtaining copies of said dimissal notices, I refiled with Ayer District Court for a payment review hearing and received a date!

This should be interesting...

EDIT:

Also.....saw this on CL recently. Thought it was kinda funny, all things considered.

Local machine shop said $2400 and 18 months to rebuild a 2.5 so $2000 doesn't sound that bad if it saves the 18 month wait, but after reading this thread I'll pick some other guy to go through. Can't believe he hasn't at least changed his phone number.

There must have been that quality work and pride he speaks of when he disassembled a customer's engine. Eventually said customer wanted it back due to, well, Scott's normal BS. So he returned a completely different engine and could not produce the customer's original engine. This was just about a month ago at the time I am posting this.

So he's ripped off at least two women and also a United States veteran.

Both ads flagged for removal on CL. Good to see they are reacting in some way.

I should expand on the whole "highest quality" and "pride in workmanship" stuff. Between the contact I've had from strangers on Craigslist as well as the forums this has been posted on, let's go into a few specific examples:

Man in VT - Received a spray-bombed engine that blew up within 900 miles.Phone calls ignored. Warranty not honored. Customer decided to cut his losses to not have to deal with Scott.

Man in ME - Sent $1200 for a parts order. Did not receive parts.

Woman in NH - She is out ~$3500. Gave money for a rebuild and did not receive goods. I believe there is a small claims pending.

Woman in VT - Estimated loss of $2000. Money sent, goods not received. I believe this is also a small claims pending situation.

Man in MA - Received spray-bombed engine that consumes 2qts of oil every 2000-3000 miles. Phone calls ignored. Warranty not honored. Customer is simply dealing with it and expecting to replace the engine again at some point.

Man in NH - Was helping son (the aforementioned veteran) with engine replacement. Loss of ~$2600. Did not receive original engine or any original parts when requested by the customer. Unsure if a refund was ever issued.

I wish I had seen these posts before I got involved with Mr Boyd in November of 2018.
Same basic story, I answered his CL ad and got a phone call back to rebuild a 2002 2.0 Subaru engine for $2500+ $300 core. We spoke multiple times and he seemed very knowledgeable and somewhat personable on the phone. He wanted no money down and would have a rebuilt longblock to me in three weeks. So i figured what do I have to loose?
He delivered a spraybombed block which I had installed.
It ran for 5 minutes before it started leaking oil from the WRONG camseals Scott had installed. I contacted him and he immediately took the responsibility for installing the wrong seals, claiming he would authorize and repay me for the replacement of new seals. I payed to have the new seals installed and the motor lasted 5 minutes before losing oil pressure due to the internal carnage. I had a second motor rebuilt by a reputable mechanic in order to be able to use the vehicle and I am still waiting to see what all Scott will do although I CANNOT with a clear conscience ever use whatever product he might possibly deliver. He has now gone silent and is not returning any emails either. He does have my useless "rebuilt" engine and refuses to refund my $2800 + any addition installation costs.
I have contacted the Littleton PD and have added my name to whatever file they may have started against this thief. I do have his license plate number but not his address.
Still contemplating next moves, lawsuit or chalking it up to an expensive life lesson.
