But even then the dealer still makes mistakes. I got the wrong intake manifold gasket from the dealer, even when I gave them the correct VIN.

Anyone need Phase I gaskets?

I need to make a meaningless post to prove I am human before I am allowed to ask questions so this feels redundant to the thread, not that redundancy and dead horses didn't already abound in here but...I actually just bought parts and they should be showing up today. Anyways, I think on the whole the VIN ID is a good idea, sucks that they got your part wrong though robinson, can't you send it back and tell them they goofed?

The reason(s) that a vin # is asked for:
A) Depending on the catalog system that the user is working on - it can be required for gaining access to the catalog..
B) It DEFINATELY makes looking up your part easier. It immediately calls
out year, make, model, build options, split year availibility, build reference notes, ect..
C) Shortens the time it takes to help you (the customer) - allows the counterman instant access to all info on said vehicle.. You would be amazed at how many people have no idea what the model designation is of thier car, let alone trim level, engine code ect,...

i try my best to not give my vin when at a dealer, even when my car is 9 years old. What was changed or bought will prob show up on car fax.

My friends do tell me that i am sometimes too paranoid.

I've only run one CarFax report, and I don't remember there being any repair info anywhere on the report. That seems a little paranoid. Plus, why would someone freak out at seeing that you repaired something on a car? They should be more freaked out if they saw no maintenance history at all...

Each car is different. The Vin really drills it down. The parts system isn't even tied into our accounting system so the conspiracy thing is out the window and if your dealer is going through that kind of trouble to deny a warranty that is way out in left field.

I can post a screen shot of what something looks like when you don't have a vin and when you do. It helps us do our job correctly and not to look like a monkey

I wonder whether any Subaru parts guys have dreams like this, where EVERYTHING looks like it's a car part.
Perhaps, if they occasionally drop a little acid.

I needed an '07 Alternator. I had the part number, but they wanted my VIN, so I gave it to them. They gave me an '06 Alternator, because my car is an '06. I told them I needed the '07 specifically, and he responded with, "This will fit, trust me." I informed him that I knew it will fit, but I need the '07 alternator. It's different. He referred me to his supervisor. I explained everything again, and the issue I was presenting the associate, and he said, "No problem. I just need your VIN." After explaining everything to him, I was annoyed that he needed a VIN, so I asked him, "Did you consume that explanation I just gave for the last 10 minutes..?" He says he did, and literally, and impressively, reexplained it back to me. Then, he accurately deduced EXACTLY why I needed it, and said he understood, but in order to help, he needs my VIN. Its Parts Dept. policy. I gave him the benefit of the doubt. I gave him my VIN... He came back 5 minutes later with the '06 Alternator.............

Of course, I reexplain my situation and he says, "Trust me. It'll fit". I said I know, I don't want fit, I want '07 STI Alternator. I bring him and the associate to my car and physically show him why I need it over the '06 Alternator and the supervisor agrees an '07 Alt would help. The associate says, I just need a part number.... Go inside and as I try to hand him the part number, he walks away. He comes back a few minutes later with the '07 Alternator. I ask him if he needed the part number and he scoffs and claims, "I know where every part is. Just ask".................
