Default Car Detailing 201 - going beyond the basics

This weekend's detail:

2013 Toyota 4Runner Limited
Black on black
Over 100,000 miles
Daily driven, parked under a mostly shaded car port
Many long distance road trips to the mountains and local desert

Products and methods used:

Wash
-Optimum No Rinse
-Carpro Reset
-Chemical's green microfiber wash mit
-ONR Big Red Sponge
-iK Foamer hand pump sprayer
-Three buckets
-Griot’s Garage Clay Sponge
-Luxury Mixrofiber Big Daddy edgeless drying towel
-P&S Bead Maker on windows

Engine bay
-Purple Power regular and citrus formulas
-Optimum No Rinse
-Turtle Wax Hybrid Ceramic Detailer

Door Jams
-Omptimum No Rinse
-Turtle Wax Hybrid Ceramic Detail
-Followed up next day with P&S Bead Maker for slickness

[Interior]
-Vacuumed
-303 Protectant wipe down all surfaces
-IPA solution sprayed on windows for a streak-free clean

Paint correction
-Porter Cable DA
-3D One over the hood, rear and side panels
-3D Speed on front bumper and
-TAC System Oil Zero as an IPA wipe down before and after polishing
-Turtle Wax Hybrid Ceramic Polish on roof, by hand. Also used to touch up some other areas on the vehicle
-URO Fiber 6" 50/50 pad on the hood, combo'd with 3D One then Meguiar's compound to try and diminish water spots that just wouldn't budge. I consulted a professional friend, and he recommended wet sanding to truly get rid of them. That wasn't in the budget, nor time frame, so they remain. But I cut them down visibly by 50%.
-Adam's 5" Orange pad for medium polishing
-Lake Country green 3" pad on front bumper and headlights
-Chemical Guys pad cleaner spray and air compressor to blow out pads between passes

Wheels/Tires
-P&S Brake buster with a wheel wooly
-Once over'd with Turtle Wax Ceramic Detail Spray
-Finished with their Ceramic Coat spray
-Turtle Wax glossy tire spray, applied to applicator then to tires for a mat finish
Last Step Protection
-Ethos Ceramic Wax Pro over sides and rear
-Turtle Wax Ceramic Coat on roof
-TAC System One Step Master on hood
-TAC System Moonlight on trim around windows and hood under the wipers

Summary
- I started this job very tired from my regular work week on Saturday. I prefer to start fresh, at sunrise on my day off. But I knew this would be a long and tough job. The hood was a major setback, but it's my fault for chasing perfection. I was eager to use the 50/50 pad, and it worked, but took more effort and cleaning between passes than I was expecting. The water spots weren't noticeable until the car was pulled into the garage for a pre-correction inspection. In full sunlight, I had to look at a lower angle to notice them. The owner wasn't aware. Hindsight, let them be.

- I shouldn't expect an older, high-mileage car to come out like it looks brand new. Time is a resource, and I find myself wanted to get it perfect...which takes a tremendously long time at my amateur skill level and with the tools I have.
So long as I learn from my mistakes and set reasonable expectations (not the customers!), I think things will go smoothly. But I found myself quite disorganized and even anxious as the sun was setting. Like, "Damnit, I'm still working on this thing!?"

Hindsight, do a one-step with 3D speed or similar product.

Try a damp rag.
Or an IPA solution and rag
Isopropyl Alcohol 25% mixed with water

It used to be 79 cents.
Probably ten dollars now, if you can find any.

So with all this extra time on my hands I'm thinking of taking a stab at doing a paint correction and ceramic coat job on my car. My detailer guy quoted me $1k+ for a full paint correction and 5-year Opti Coat Pro. I feel like I'm inclined enough to learn and gain a few tools in the process.

I've never done a full paint correction but there are a lot of resources out there and I'm pretty mechanically inclined. Here is my list of things I think I'll need. Note that my SS is 3.5 years old and only has 22k miles. Unless I'm driving to and from work, it spends most of the time in the garage. I would say the paint has some minor swirling but nothing serious. No visible scratches, dings, etc. Apparently SS paint is pretty soft though.

I'd much rather do this myself and get some nice tools out of it and perhaps learn a thing or two. With WFH becoming more and more available to me it frees up time for me to wash my cars again.

Is there anything I'm missing here?

Ive tried many glass cleaners and none have impressed me until i tried sonax. Invisible glass as hyped as it is and all the others wouldnt cut through the usual haze and film that accumulates. This stuff does.

Will try this - Invisible Glass is over hyped like you said, and really just smears things around. i've just been using some Sam's Club glass cleaner of some sort because IG is a PITA and just sits unused in my garage.

TACsystem product line is really making this Volvo shine!
28 days since it was detailed and the initial part of the video is the water beading before washing. Most of the dirt/dust/pollen just rinsed right away.

Anyone here ever had to remove that greasy look of cheap dash cleaners like armor-all?

I just got a used car (2018 Kia Sportage)and of course it's interior is completely protected by something really greasy. I like the matte or oem look. Will clorox wipe everything due to being a used vehicle, and if its still greasy looking will try some white vinegar-dawn-water solution.

As a side. Cant wait to get the suv detailed. Will spend all Friday on this.

isopropyl alcohol cut with a little water and dawn should remove it easily.

Drove through a construction zone on my way to work. When i stopped for gas i noticed a gray mist all over my wheels/tires and on my paint. Im thinking they were sawing concrete and i drove through the water/dust mix. I hit the do it yourself car wash and hosed it off for a few minutes with high pressure soap/water but the car is still covered in it.

Anyone have any bright ideas on how to clean the car with the least damage to the finish? Keep foaming it and pressure washing then switch to a mitt with a pile of soap and optimum no rinse for lubricity?

I am really impressed with the Turtle Wax Ceramic Spray Coating. Gives the paint a deep shine. I think I am going to order a thing of the Ceramic Wet Wax as well.

After more research, white vinegar was the answer. It turns concrete dust into mush. I cut it with about 30% water and it got the majority off with pressure washing alone. Still a film left behind, buts its soft and comes off easily.

Thanks as always!

im using about 1oz chemical guys honeydew snow foam per gallon of water. too much soap and it has a tough time making it through the nozzle. a gallon of solution is enough for multiple washings, so dont put more than a gallon in the foamer unless you like pumping it constantly. with about 1 gallon in it and inflating it to 60 psi, i can foam my entire car without having to pump it up again.

Awesome! I have the exact same soap already! Hopefully the weather will cooperate and I'll give it a shot this week.

Thanks.

I bought a new Maxshine 15mm DA.
Wow, what a difference from an 8mm Porter Cable.

I still want to be a fan of siO2 infused polishes and coatings. But Xtreme Solutions polymer and acrylic based products are gloss and slickness monsters. Very easy to work with with immediate eye-pleasing results.

I actually used the hybrid poly-seal as the last step protection, not the magnum wax as pictured above.

But this Camry had that combo applied to it.

Also, this arrived after I finished:

The clay disc should be a huge time saver.

Hey guys, some of you messaged me but I goofed and deleted all my PM's.

I'm wanting to buy a decent auto wash kit for the house. It doesn't need to be top of the line fancy ****. All it's going to clean is my Raptor, off road buggy, and the ladies the Jetta. I do have a pressure washer so I can use that (it's a nice gas unit). Is there a complete setup of everything of chemical bro's or something else that you would recommend? I'm over going to the pay wash and want to do it from home. Currently at the pay wash I'll use the pre-soak which is some sort of soap, high pressure soap, hot wax / clear coat, high pressure clear coat, spot free rinse.

Let me know wtf I should buy.

i have a gas one for big jobs like concrete driveway/patio and deck, but its a PITA for small stuff like car washing. my main gripe with my little electric one is wrangling the hose and cord, which are all twisted up by the time i'm done.

just got this Yard Force one not too long ago - has reels for hose and cord. the handle also folds down to take up less storage space.

as far as a foam cannon, get one with metal threads on the bottle - had a plastic-threaded one and after 4-5 uses the plastic deformed and it was useless.

i'm not going to get into all the chemical recommendations, but 303 Aerospace UV protectant is awesome for anything plastic, rubber, vinyl, or leather (modern clear-coated leather, not old-school uncoated leather) - interior and exterior plastic, weatherstripping, tires, wiper blades, etc. i bought a gallon of it on Amazon, and use it for around the house stuff, too.

Been a while since I cleaned my car properly. We moved in May and the weeks before and after were pretty busy. I ran it through a touchless wash a couple times in that time, but a few weeks ago I gave the car a proper cleaning. I posted it in Markmans "itch for a new daily" thread but forgot to post these here:

ONR Wash and a quick coat of Meguiars Ultimate Wax and she cleaned up nicely. She was in the bodyshop in Feb (repainted part of the front bumper from a 5MPH bump) and their guys installed some swirls that were not there when I dropped the car off, but oh well. I still need to clay/buff/ceramic coat the car but in the meantime this was good enough until it cools off a little and I'm able to spend a few hours on her.

Buying a new car and want to seal it with something nice looking but LONG lasting (car will likely be kept outside, and it's a dark color).

Have PC Orbital and blue/green/black/red pads. Don't care about the cost. Can follow instructions.
I looked back a few pages, and checked detailing forum...meh.
Quick and easy, products I should look at?

Despite keeping up with maintenance, my driver's seat leather is much shinier and slicker than the others. About once a month I wash the seats with Pinnacle Leather and Vinyl cleaner and protect them with 303 Leather Protectant. Still looks like this. I think it's just wear and tear so it may just be normal. What do?

(The fabric looks like that because I washed it and it's air drying somewhat unevenly).

Got another one for you kids. A few days ago, I spilled about 2oz of coffee with milk on the carpet. Within fifteen minutes of the spill, I hit it with Oxy Power-Out Carpet Cleaner, followed by some water and another hit of the Oxy Power Out. No dice. Even after a few applications, the cleaning cloths still smelled like coffee and with the wildfires here in Portland this past week I wasn't going to stay out there too long. Got a little stinky. Went to Home Depot this weekend and rented a wet/dry vac, bought some of the Rug Doctor auto carpet and upholstery cleaner, shampooed the hell out the carpets and upholstery (got a bunch of junk out, based on the color of the water). Smell appeared to be gone so I returned the wet/dry vac. Got in the car this morning... Still stinks. I may have missed a spot, especially since it's a black carpet with a lot of nooks and crannies, which makes it hard to see what's dirty and get a vacuum into all the spots. But it was seriously like two ounces of coffee, max.

What do I do next? I'm going to try to hit it with more of the Oxy Power-Out since that's always done right by me, especially knowing I may have missed some spots, but I'm stumped after that. Any thoughts? I do have some Ozium kicking around and my local Home Depot carry both Odoban and Gonzo bags. I am hoping for something local so I can treat the stink before it really sets in and before it gets too rainy for me to air out the car (right now it's in the parking lot at work with the windows and sunroof cracked).

Thank.

pull the carpet. the coffee got past the padding/insulation and is in the low spots on the floor. clean the carpet real good while its out and use a bleach/water solution on the floorpan.

I'm skeptical given how little coffee it was, but I'll take a peek if the smell persists after another blast of cleaning stuff tonight. I think the rear carpet comes out really easily on these cars so that should be easy enough. Thank you!

So...

I’ve been detailing the volvo. I fixed a little paint bubbling on the quarters and sprayed it with aerosol. I screwed it up a little bit and didn’t use edge blender when it was still wet so I have a nasty dry line. I also didn’t scuff the clear enough. I have a couple rot holes right behind the side skirts- it’s being eaten from the outside in and will need some repair I’m not equipped to do- so I’m gonna (hopefully) have some new metal welded in next year and I’ll have them properly respray the quarters then, and the roof as well because it has a fair amount of sap damage. It also needs some light repair after its shelter collapsed onto it last winter.

Anyway, so I’ve been buying Chemical Guys stuff.

Clean Slate stripping wash via a foam cannon
Medium clay bar
Washed again
Four step polished the roof and quarters I painted with their V32/34/36/38 polishes on 5” Hex Logic pads
Two step polishing the sides using V36/38 because I suspect based on the condition of the paint after the clay bar that it’s had a correction somewhere around the time I bought it. I don’t drive it often, so beyond the contamination that came off it’s actually in decent shape.

I still have yet to do the front doors, fenders, hood and bumper. The hood will likely get the 4 step polish while the rest will be 2.

So that leaves me with the protective coat. I’m not inclined to delve into ceramic since the paint isn’t in amazing shape. So I guess I’m open to (cheaper) suggestions.

Also, it definitely has some rust staining on the wheels. Anyone have any luck with the rust stain removers for wheels?
