Default 2012 Impreza hatch rattle/creak solution

Hi,

Have a 4 month old 2012 Impreza that started developing creaks and rattles from the hatch area.

To save some of you the time and trouble on where it is coming from, i will tell you how to solve your problem w the hatch and other rubberised components.

The trick is buying some silicon grease. The rubberised parts WILL dry and need to be lubed, but you need to use a grease that will preserve the rubber -- make it supple again. Pick up $3 faucet SILICON GREASE from Home depot.

Apply it to the spots circled on the pics attached to this post.

Obviously, if you find other parts of your car creaking -- such as the dash or piller, locate it and apply the silicon grease to the rubber/plastic component.

I would think that this would solve any squeaking or rubbing noises, but a hard metal sounding rattle? Wouldn't that require a removal of the plastic shroud from around the latch and loosening the bolts and moving the latch down such that the hatch is held more tightly against the opening in the body shell?

Has anyone yet moved the latch down to address the rattle sounds coming from the hatch? Don't get me wrong, I will try this...I just assumed the intermittent rattle sound was going to require moving of the latch.

Thanks!

well, a squeak/creak could begin to sound like a rattle. And a rattle could have some components of a squeak. And a component that is supposed to have some give/flex cause a squeak and rattle.

But, by all means, if you find someone loose that shouldn't be, tighten it down.

As for other possibilities of "rattles" coming from the hatch area: check the plastic push in pins connecting the bumper to the rest of the car. Those tend to relax their grip over time/rough roads and may cause a rattling sound from the back.

But, i guarantee, those plastic/rubber bits will begin to dry sooner or later and you should apply silicon grease to them to prolong its life and mitigate unwanted noises.

Thanks mayozack - I was not trying to be combative, I realize it might have sounded that way. I was really more amazed that the problem could be something so simple. I will definitely give your method a try. Can you post a link to the silicone grease you mention?

Thanks

Default Creaking hatch on 2012 Impreza

I can't see the pictures on where to apply the grease. Could you possibly post them again?

My rattle / squeak turned out to be the hatch spoiler. I took the inside trim piece off last weekend and it appears the outermost driver side bolt pulled it self through a bit and caused some play on that side. I installed a plastic washer and bolted it down and it's been quite since.
