I just pulled the thermostat. I tested it in boiling water alongside the new OEM one. It seems to be functioning just fine can I see no evidence of a leak or anyting.

So I just had a friend deliver an engine lift to my house. I've been researching Subaru engines for quite a while now. as mad as I am that I have to tear apart this car that I just bought I am slightly excited about it.

I'm fairly sure did I know all the parts that I need to order but if anybody feels like making a list and throwing it up here I'd appreciate that. Most of my research has been for a non-turbo sohc Subaru.
This is what I plan to order:
Subaru OEM updated head gaskets
2 exhaust manifold gaskets
Intake manifold gaskets
Valve cover gaskets with spark plug seals (not necessary but since the engines out I'm going to do it anyways)
OEM head bolts
OEM coolant temperature sensor
Turbo outlet gasket
maybe a timing kit mine is brand new so I might just use it again.


That is a list that I come up with off the top of my head. is there anything else you guys can think of or any resources you recommend to read up on this job? I did just order a digital copy of the service manual.

Also if there's any specific tools that will make my life easier please recommend them. I'm an amputee and I only have one hand so the easier the better! I will probably end up making another thread just to get more info on all these questions and any questions that come up as I go, but I figured I'd start here.

With 117k the HG were up for a change anyway. Be sure to take good pics of both sides of the HGs Block & heads when you take them out. That's really the only visual we will get for a bad HG and even then it can be hard to see if it's slight.

Hope you have an engine stand too

You will need exhaust gaskets for both sides of the turbo and the up pipe to manifold. Grimspeed sells a kit with all of them including manifold gaskets. Timing components should be reusable with only 20k on them. I'd be surprised if you don't need to replace the valve cover gaskets as they expand after getting oil on them and don't like going back into place. You might want to flush the coolant system before pulling the engine with a coolant flush like Preston/Cleaner. It's amazing what junk gets in there and then it's done and you won't have to drop the coolant a 2nd time.

Aren't there levels to this? As in just because you have a hg issue doesn't necessarily mean you will 100% be blowing out white smoke from your exhaust.

I think what matters is the degree of damage to said head gasket.

I have had two (2) Subarus with head gasket woes. 2 different symptoms on each.

04 wrx: coolant overflow bottle would get full after every drive. Cooling system was being over pressurized and pushing coolant unto overflow bottle (plastic bottle near radiator)

04 leagcy (N/A): this one had an external coolant leak. I could run my finger near rear driver side of short block (where block and heads meet) and feel coolant leaking from there.

NO WHITE SMOKE OUT OF EXHAUST FROM EITHER CAR!

My previous 2007 XT did similar. On the highway if I pushed it hard the temp gauge would creep up and if I let off it would go back down. It stopped doing that with a new radiator.

subarus dont really work that way. What happens to them is they leak exhuast air into the cooling system. get a block tester and make sure that its not the head gasket

Usually that exhaust leak causes the cooling system to over pressurize. That in tern pushes coolant into the overflow tank beside the radiator .
