Replace 02 WRX Trans with JDM WRX?
Second gear finally went out on me on the 5spd, and I found a JDM WRX transmission TY754VBBBA 4.111 ratio 5MT that is fairly inexpensive. Will this directly bold up to my current diffs/housing? Thanks.

It will bolt to your engine block but it will not work with your existing rear diff - ratio miss match.

I guess this is the place to ask. I have a 2002 wrx 5mt and I found a metal piece in my tranny fluid about 1/3 the size of a dime. Any advice/tips I'm new to the subie world. I would create my own thread but I'm to new.

No. The gears are the same.

Yes it would only change the gearing ratio. If you are the type to dump the clutch and be aggressive with the throttle at low RPMs then you're just as likely to break it. With the shorter final drive you'll increase RPM faster which will technically reduce shock load but it's a crap shoot as to whether it will actually make a difference as there's so many other variables to account for. Having owned one, I will say the gearing is far more fun to drive. I never felt line the 3.9 was suited for the 5 speed personally.

I’ve been debating this for when it happens. I’m leaning towards you could buy 3-6 5 speeds for the price of an STi swap. And it’s not that hard to swap them out.

But then you are going to have more down time, frustration and still end up spending just as much money in the long run.

The JDM 5spd is a great factory replacement for lower power levels around 300whp. Shorter gear ratios for peppier driving. If you ask me, the gear spacing is like a Legacy Spec B without 6th gear. Similar to the STI long gears with a longer 5th than the STI.
Anything more than 350whp I'd go 6spd all day. |
