Default Rear coilover spring loose??

I bought my car (03 wrx) and it came with bc coilover on it. When I drive I hear a clunking sound coming from the rear when I go over small bumps and holes. When I jack up the back of the car, I noticed the spring on the coilover is loose and I can move it by hand up and down a good 2”. Is this right, or should they be snug even when the car is jacked up off the ground. Could this also be the clunking sound?

Sway bar end links and bushing I’ve already replaced because that’s usually the first place I start when I hear clunking in the rear. I checked all the other bushings too and they seem to be fine.

With standard BC coilovers it is normal for the spring to be loose when the suspension is at full droop (car on jacks). That is not likely to be the source of the clunking.

I would check the topmounts for play and the other suspension bushings. Also- the rear subframe bushings are probably worn out and could cause the sound.

Good luck.
