Purchased a 223,000 mile STi and drove 450 miles home
Hello NASIOC! I used to own a 2005 WRX but had to sell it last year...I am now proud to say I own a 2009 WRX STi hatch! Yes with a story..haha
As attention grabbing as the title is, the journey was pretty uneventful thankfully. Car is in amazing condition. One ding on the driver side is the only one on the car. Hood scoop has started to fade and the front bumper has some pitting. And that’s the end to the bad of the car! Car is completely stock with no modifications other than aftermarket rear suspension arms and a stereo. Engine runs great and has no leaks or weird sounds! Pics will be forthcoming... just thought I’d share this unique story!

Congrats What do you have planned for the future??? I recently re-acquired my 05 STi that I was the original owner of.. and Happy to have it back in my possession, where it will stay. Lots of info here.. don't be afraid to ask if you have a question and can't find the answer... Search is your friend.. .. Anyways congrats again on new vehicle. As long as it was taken care of with routine maintenance it will last. I have one that went 320k on the OE motor.. my STi has 132k on the OE motor.. as I know the complete history.. Enjoy Bill |

As far as the future goes I’m going to leave it untouched mostly! I want to keep it stock as far as powertrain goes as I’m enjoying the amount or power. A few cosmetic things and that’s about it.
Thank you for the welcome! |

Congrats! It would be fun to restore it as much as possible to a showroom stock experience. I hope to tackle a such a project in the future on an earlier model.

So far so good! A loose and kinda stiff power steering belt is what was squeaking and that’s it so far. I’m going to get the transmission and differential fluid changed here in the coming weeks just to make sure it stays good. Just some minor mods in store for it but remaining stock powertrain for now! Works and don’t want to mess that up |

Small Update: First issue with the car! After a few really cold days it’s developed a small oil leak somewhere on the passenger side and it’s dripping on the headers which makes a wonderful smoke show. Without tearing into it I can see it looks like it’s coming from the timing case.

It could be that, or run your finger around the LH valve cover. They tend to leak with age, and they drip right on the header/uppipe. Good thing is that it's an easy fix.
One thing you might want to take a look at, (but maybe not since you've had pretty good luck with it so far), is to have it tuned. They tried to make the 09-11s have better gas mileage by keeping them lean long after the initial throttle tip-in, and they also ran the #4 cylinder 1-2 degrees leaner to get that cylinder to knock first and set off the knock sensor, which is mounted closest to that cylinder. Those factors seem to get the blame for the dreaded ringland failure, so it's a good idea to get it tuned just for safety. You could probably just get an Accessport and flash their canned Stage 0 tune and it would be safer than the stock tune. I have an 08 OBXT and as soon as I got it, I looked at the stock tune, all those things were there. But congrats on the new car, looks super clean! Now that I've had a couple of Subarus, I wish more people would talk about how long the car has been good to them, instead of the usual power bragging. |

Thank your for all the knowledge! I will take up that suggestion on what to check. As far as tuning goes I would love to get it it tuned but none are anywhere close to local sadly. One day though. One day. Do you happen to know if that lean issue persists even in S# mode? Since that changes the throttle mapping? Yea so far so good other than little cosmetic things so this oil leak isn’t super concerning. I have a great Subaru mechanic here and he’s going to help me out tracing it down. |

Not 100% sure on the Sti tune, but it was there on my OBXT tune. Different ROMs are setup differently, but on my tune, the I/S/S# mode differences lie mostly in the throttle and load maps, not the timing maps, so the lean #4 cyl is on all maps and the open loop delay setting is global as well.
If you don't have a local tuner, you could get an Accessport and it would come with a tune that you could flash. If you keep an eye out in thee classifieds, people sell them fairly regularly. |

Update 1/22/21
Oil leak has been found and partially repaired! Main oil leak was coming from both valve cover gaskets and I had those replaced. The oil cooler is also leaking a little bit so on the next oil change I will be changing out the O-ring on that. Feels good to know the issue and have it fixed |

Yes I agree! Just to have piece of mind it’s worth it. I will be doing the timing belt and related accessories later this year for the same reason. |
