Chump Car 24hr at Streets of Willow
Completed a Chump Car event last weekend and had a blast.
Vehicle - 95 Subaru Impreza 2 door, 2.5 SOHC, with a WRX tranny converted to 2wd A quick recap...Did not sleep for 48 hours before the event performing multiple "small" modifications to the car. Arrived 2 hours late to the race...5 drivers drove the hell out of the car...keeping pace with the top teams. Only raised the hood twice to verify the underhood temps were good. Completed the race without any mechanical failures, even with multiple 4-tire and 2-tire off mistakes. Would like to thank my "sponsors." First of all; Fuji Motorsports, located in Chatsworth, Ca (Way West of Los Angeles on the 118). I took the car there for pre-race prep and received more attention then i knew about. The first day the car was there, Jon, the head tech, checked every bolt. Not only to verify tightness but to verify it was the correct bolt. He knows every bolts location by sight, and would replace bolts if they were not in the correct location. it was this fine attention to detail which allowed me to drive flat out for 22 hours and not have any mechanical problems. Next Maxxis tires gave me a good deal on some street tires for the event and I made good use of them. Also Sumo parts helped me source good prices on OEM Subaru parts, check them out on the web!!! And lastly Rising Star Motors in Temple City...anyone with maintenance needs should definitely check them out...they have great labor prices, are knowledgeable and make it to the track often. thanks for looking...I will have some video up shortly...

Right on! Congratulations on staying running 'til the end.
Is it set up FWD or RWD? Have you compared lap times between 2WD and 4WD? Some friends and I will be doing the 14-hour race in Portland this weekend in a Ford Escort, and I can hardly wait. It'll be our second race. |

The car is set up for front wheel drive. We chopped the nose off the center diff and welded it together. Binding the outer and inner output shaft in the transmission.
We have not tested the differences yet but will be experimenting with different set ups and test weight, traction and consumables. |

Cool, I'm really curious how the different options compare.
When we were deciding what car to build up, I was adamant that we had to go RWD or AWD, but the Escort won anyway. I'm really happy with it though. The handling is way better than I expected, and FWD is so forgiving, it saved my ass more than once. An NA 2.5L Subaru coupe would have been my first choice though so I'm still kinda jealous. |

we hacve a race this weekend at Portland International Raceway. We will be running a 1984 Mustang 5.0, we are on our 4th race & 3rd engine with this car! hopefully this latest junkyard find will hold together a bit better. we also rebuilt the rear end. It is pretty snappy with 220 hp and 2600lbs. weight.

I have a lemons race coming up in May with a 98 Ford contour with an 'angry' 2.5L v6
might be doing the 24 hour chump car race at VIR in July. |

just make sure you have a big radiator, oil cooler, etc. no matter what you drive (from personal experience unfortunately) in Lemons or Chump!

yeah, we're addressing heat issues, which I've long suspected will become our issue. TERRIBLE flow across the radiator in the conTURD.

i drive in lemons all the time. I didnt do this streets of willow day ..but i bet lemons would be fun on that track so tight..so many hairy passes would be fun! I am racing in may at fernely (reno)in lemons 24 there on the 14th ...are you running that day? Its a true 24 so we will be running at night cant wait first night race of my life yay...
i think our theme is kobra kia ( from karate kid) we will be running the death cab volvo if your familiar with the cars that run a a lot! hit me up peace!! |

Yeah, it'll be interesting to see what redneck solutions we'll have for getting it to turn. The thing is gutted and we can't pull enough weight off of the nose. It seems like the car is 90/10 split

Jay, not a problem. i figure as long as we are discussing crap can racing it is not off topic.
Also we used a wrx transmission and turned it into a FWD, we did not bolt up the drive shaft or rear diff. and used axle stubs to hold the rear hubs together. i am not sure if 2WD parts would fit, i appreciate it though. i pm'ed you about the suspension. |

We were in the top 10 until we blew a head gasket on Saturday! the car absolutely ripped it up with a stock 302 and 3:73 gears. we might have done better with 3:55 gears honestly.
We pulled the heads and accessories, including headers, and repaired the headgaskets in 1 hour 45 minutes. made int back on track but somewhere along the line the oil pump was damaged. it failed at the checkered flag! we removed the motor, replaced the oil pump (rip off the oil pan) and had the car running for the green flag. We hurt the motor pretty bad though, and it failed spectacularly at about 2pm. water shooting out of the spark plug holes spectacular. It was a good race, hope to get another cheap motor and this time, prior to throwing it in the car, remove and replace all gaskets. might even put a new oil pump in there for good measure. and some new rings. |

fwd transmissions are phase 1 transmissions and from my experience with it, I'll say it's probably a no go...however I know phase 1 and phase 2 center diff sections are interchangeable.
Why did you guys choose fwd or rwd? |

I'll snap some pics of the FWD trans opened up. It's virtually the same as the AWD version, aside from the driven shaft being solid instead of hollow. There is no transfer section and the rear cover is shorter. The shift selector rod is tucked closer than an AWD type, so the mid piece from the shift lever is longer. Nothing a welder couldn't cure.
I didn't see any differences that would keep an AWD front diff from going into the FWD case....but the clutch setup is totally different than the WRX box. |

Micah, we went with a front wheel drive to save weight and gain fuel efficiency.
We converted a WRX trans because we have snapped the snout off older 2WD impreza transmissions and we could not find a legacy transmission. Also running a WRX trans allowed us to use the AWD trans mount. Jay, which 2WD trans do you have? |

Tires
Decided to post some pics of our tires. This is why you do not want to run street tires on the track...The center blocks of the tire could not hold up to the lateral forces or the heat created.
Even with this tire disadvantage and 100,000 mi old struts we still managed to set times similar to a stock STI around Streets of Willow with a fastest time of 1:34.735 and averaging 1:34s - 1:36s Last edited by oem; 04-22-2011 at 07:04 PM. Reason: Photos did not load |
