Coolant temperature sensor 2 and 3 pin?
Hey guys, I'm new to the forum and new to owning a Subaru too. I was looking for a little advice. I recently bought an 07 Impreza with a bad motor (got a great deal on it) and just got done putting another 2.5 into it. I finished up dropping the new motor in today and everything is awesome, except for my engine temperature gauge not working. The engine I dropped into the car has a 2 pin coolant temperature sensor, the old engine had a 3 pin connector. I think this is the problem with the gauge not working but am trying to figure out if there is an easy fix for this problem. I browsed around for a long time and found this from NASOC http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2540077
I still am not 100% sure if or how I can convert the 2 wire connector that's in the car now to the 3 wire that was on the old engine. Any help would greatly be appreciated!

If you haven't thrown the old crossover pipe out, just swap.
Otherwise just go to salvage yard and get one. Opposed Forces show different part numbers for build dates in 07, but they seem to overlap a lot. That being the case from 03-08 Imprezas ,Legacys and Foresters are the same, See http://opposedforces.com/parts/impreza/us_g12/type_12/ after finding part, click on part number, then usage info. Will give you all the models you can use. O/ |

I have the old crossover pipe but the issue is the wiring that runs to the coolant temperature sensor. The wiring on the old engine had 3 wires going to the coolant temperature sensor. The wiring on the engine I just dropped in has two wires going to the coolant temperature sensor. I guess what I am trying to figure out is what to do about not having that third wire (because I am thinking that must be the one that controls the gauge?). Could I run a third to my old three wire sensor and hook that wire up somewhere?

Just an update on the issue that is now resolved. I took the three wire coolant temperature sensor and installed it into the old crossover pipe, I then ran a completely new 3rd wire from the engine wiring harness to the coolant temperature sensor and made sure that wire was put into the same place on the old wiring harness and now everything is working and operating as it should. It's not a detailed write up but hopefully that information can help someone at some point if you happen to swap motors and one is a 2 pin vs a 3 pin coolant temperature sensor.

Same issue
Hello, I was wondering if you could tell me how you wired the third wire into your harness

Most Suby techs will swap intake, injectors, fuel rail, and harness from the original engine to the donor engine. Everything plugs in and works, you have all your original sensors and components that came with the car (sometimes parts on donor engines can be defective). Takes a little time, a couple extra gaskets and o-rings, but it makes things much simpler in the long run. |
