What tool did you use to open up the hole in the subframe?

I cut upen the hole with one of these
http://www.harborfreight.com/air-too...not%20provided

It may not have been that exact one, I think Harbor Freight has a couple of similar ones. Then I went back and smoothed the edges using a file and an angle grinder to hopefully prevent any cracks from forming. Then I went over any raw steel with some rustoleum black epoxy paint. (I just sprayed it into a cup and brushed it on to prevent any overspray)

Ok cool. I don't have an air compressor. I wonder if a sawzall would work?

That other info was helpful too, thanks!

Harbor Freight has an electric version of that tool too. I think a sawzall would be too big.

Yea I will look into that since I don't have an air compressor. I would imagine that it would work just as well. Thanks!

Rather than cutting the tie rod ends could you swap over the GD inner and outter tie rods to the GR rack?

Possibly, if the threads match.

But, the inner rods were brand new on the '15 rack, while my stock ones have 11 years and ~97k miles on them. I also didnt want to mess with the clamps on the boots.

Edit: If you're considering this for a GC/GF/GM or a GG you WILL have to replace the inner tie rods though. There's just enough left after cutting to fit the GD. There's no way to cut any more for the narrower track models.

I have a gc, but I also have the GD STi control arms and axles. I went from the the 16.5:1 to the 15.0:1 05+ GD STi rack and it was night and day. I can only guess how awesome the 13:1 is! I'm gonna have to look into this. Hopefully the inner tie rods have the same thread pitch.

Inner tie rods on the '15 STI rack are M14x1.5.

Is that the same as the GD inner tire rod ends? I ask because i have the whiteline roll Center kit on my car and would like to transfer them over.

If you look above, I transferred my whiteline rcck over to the 15 tie rods, those threads are the same. The threads he's talking about are where the inner tie rods attach to the rack.

The '15 STI inner tie rod stub thread are M20x1.5 which is larger than any other Subaru inter tie rod stub thread I've measured. More details here:http://legacygt.com/forums/showthrea...ap-234351.html

Nice. Concerned a bit about the quality of these thread inserts though, especially for the steering system. What's anyone's experience in using these?

Sounds like with this thread insert, we can use the GG inner tie rods and make this 2015 STi rack work. For all the wagon and pre-02 users that is.

are you really thinking you're going to put sufficient shear stress on those inserts to cause them to fail?

i've driven home with a broken tie rod before. it ain't easy, it ain't pretty, but you don't immediately explode in a giant fireball. caster is your friend.

I'm thinking I never used this insert before and seeking experience from those following this thread because they, with the experience and knowing it's going to be installed in the car's steering system, as in controlling where your car is on the road, would probably be the best in addressing my concern.

Not insulting your recommendation. Just want to hear from the rest of the community.

Thought about a similar solution for the BP/BL Legacy but our inner tie rod stub threads are M18x1.5 so there would be very little room for an insert to adapt to the M20x1.5 female thread on the '15 STI rack. That being said, trimming 3-4 threads off the M14 thread of the '15 STI inner tie rod and picking up thin jam nuts gives enough clearance to get positive toe adjustment past zero, which is more than enough for me.

Underdog, I don't think this would work for a GG because of the shorter track. I guess we will have to wait and see who will be the first try either method. If I ever get to this, I will probably go the insert route first.

Gotcha - just sharing what I have discovered during the installation on my '06 LGT.

For reference, the 05-09 (BP/BL) LGT front track is 58.9" and the 08+ STI is 60.2", but I only needed to take off ~.16" per side from the '15 STI inner tie rods to get "better" than zero toe on my LGT. Not sure on the front track width of the GG or earlier models but if you have a smaller stub thread diameter to start with then the insert adapter method may prove fruitful.

Yep, all ideas appreciated. Love the shorter jam nut idea.

I don't know how clean of a cut you can get when you take off some of the threads on the inner tie rods but I thought it might be a good idea to put one of those tap & die set nuts onto the rod first before trimming and if it gets messy, you can always fix the threads this way.

I think getting new GG inner tie rods would be best because you're still putting in a new part and are able to save the 15 STi inner tie rods to sell.

I got a nice clean square cut by threading two nuts on to the inner tie rod, using them to clamp the work piece in my vice and using the outer nut as a guide for the hacksaw blade. Nice and slow with a new blade and 3-in-1 oil, followed by a light file and wire brush, then removing the two nuts yielded a cleaner end surface than original. Threads are as smooth as original.

My only concern with the stub adapter is the (however small) chance of the insert failing mid corner. I agree using new unaltered parts is ideal but for my situation (which precluded adapters) the very slight trim off the tie rods was the best solution.
