EJ205 VF39 1050X - 250WHP 225TQ on Mainline Dyno
First post woot woot.
Car: 2002 WRX w/ USDM EJ205 + JDM 4.44 5MT + VF39 + 1050X Dyno: Mainline AWD1200 Location: Infront Automotive, Auburn WA Tuner: John Ambient Temp: 70° Weather: Cloudy Elevation: 80' Stock 2021 STi results on this dyno: 200 WHP 200 WTQ Peak HP (SAE corrected): 260WHP at 6400 RPM (~300 on a Mustang dyno) NEW RESULTS Peak TQ: 232WTQ at 4600 RPM NEW RESULTS Target boost: 20 PSI Gear used for tuning: 4th Fuel: 92 octane Engine management: COBB Accessport V3 Full mod list is at the bottom. Finally got my car all taken care of by the guys at Infront Automotive after starting with the Stage 2+ COBB OTS tune in my garage a few months back. 60k miles on engine and close to that on transmission and around 2k miles ago, before I bought the car and threw tons of money at it, the engine was removed, heads got hot tanked and put back together in their stock form unfortunately, of course with a new timing belt kit. All in all, the car was fun on the Stage 2+ tune, but now the car is pretty bonkers. The 4.44 JDM gearbox I have really helps the turbo spool up a lot faster, Jan at infront said it was spinning the wheels a little bit at the top end, hence the slight dip in one of the runs. Overall the car is very pleasant to drive with great turbo response for the size and wonderful spooly noises. I know this is a pretty standard setup but it cant hurt to have another testament to the viability and drivability of the VF39 EJ205 swap. The car made 250 WHP and 226 WTQ on a Mainline chassis dyno on 20PSI with some trusty ole' Shell V-Power NiTRO+ 92 octane. Jan said the Mainline measures around 50 less than a Mustang and I was aiming for 240WHP so 250 is more than fine. John said there was even a little more in it if the fuel was a little better. I looked at the injector duty cycle and its getting well above 50% so I am very glad I went with the 1050s vs STI injectors like I was recommended. I also just picked up a case of Lucas octane booster just for safety's sake, the car is pulling some timing at WOT due to some knock. Hopefully my O2 sensors and plugs don't get all orange and gross from the booster, wish me luck. Its the same filter but just longer. Using Motul fluids everywhere else. Engine is using blue coolant instead of the standard green due to its better long life capabilities. The car is the by far most fun I've ever had on 4 wheels. After this post was made I have since added headers, motor/trans mounts and a retune and the results are at the bottom.

That's a strong setup on the Mainline at Infront. I just got a retune there a couple of days ago. What a great shop.
What I do with the Lucas is I will fill halfway, dump in the octane booster and then fill to the top. I had had a slight issue, but I deduced it was from getting a strong initial dose if I poured it in first. No issues since then. Take care of that fueling now, looks like you have the injectors and rails to go flex fuel easily with a better pump. My Infront build thread is just next to yours. Thanks for that tip!
I just dumped it in after filling up but I'll try it your way next time. Have you had any trouble with O2 sensors or sparkplugs having issues with that orange buildup after using this product? And yeah I am honestly probably going to pull the motor apart and build it sooner than I would have liked because I just found some metal shavings and a cm long metal shard in the oil pan so a Blackstone test shall reveal if the motor is good health. Likely going 2.1 stroker, flexfuel, Borgwarner EFR7163 with the Full Race stock location kit, Killer B headers, etc. Also going to swap to 1300 injectors when I end up having to build the motor but the test will tell all. Update:
Due to some exhaust leaks and some more issues, I decided to snag some coated Killer B holy headers and have my tune touched up to compensate. Will post how the car sounds with the new headers and how the power curve changes once installed and tuned. Can't wait! |

I've always like a VF39 on an EJ20 for a cheap little set up. The GR/VA TMIC is a super cheap upgrade that is available now, that wasn't back when I have my little 205 and VF39 DD. Miss that little car.

I'm really looking forward to directly comparing the before and after dyno sheets with the Killer B holy headers. Tuner said I should decrease some spool, and gain some mid-range and top-end. Can't wait to see if that's the case. |

SAME. I wanted one the day the WRX option came to the states, but I was a senior in high school with no money, haha. 16 years later the stars finally aligned for a nice example. Fun practical little daily that flies under the radar a bit better than anything non-wagon

Killer B holy header touch up tune
Finally installed the new headers!
Got the car back from InFront Auto after the touch up tune for the Holy Header on 92 pump gas, no booster, and WOW the car is so much better to drive. The car made an extra 10 WHP and 7WTQ with the header on a very conservative retune. Juxtaposing the two dyno charts, its no contest (retune on top), the new tune with the holy headers is infinitely more driveable and smooth. And going from < 25% to 60%+ throttle, the boost (and torque as a result) comes on a lot more linearly and quickly, just a blast to drive. The new exhaust note is much more pleasant to my ears personally and I find myself enjoying the sound of the car more. Here is a clip of cold start with new headers. And keep in mind, for this touch up tune, no fuel or timing was added, only removed. So the car made an extra 10WHP with the same boost, with less timing and fuel, pretty freaking awesome. And John even said that if I wanted to push the car, he could have gotten another 15-30WHP with a more aggressive tune. They also told me the car no longer experiences boost creep which is great. Additionally, they swapped the knock control model from the 205 to the 207 map, changing the threshold for the knock sensors. And maybe its the fresh gas I had them swap in before the tune but where I was seeing knock before on my old tune, I am no longer seeing much if any. The Blackstone test we sent in also confirmed that the stock motor was in good condition with no abnormal wear or metal in the oil: In order to fit the headers, I had an STI oil pan installed along with Killer B pickup and baffle, accompanied by some GroupN motor mounts and an STI 5mt trans mount, both of which help the car feel a lot better while driving. The shifts are so much more smooth, crisp and precise now. It genuinely feels like an entirely different gearbox. Overall, my baby is now confirmed to be in good health, is way more smooth, and sounds awesome. It has been 100% worth the time, effort and money spent to get to this point. Very nice. You should get an aem 340 fuel pump and go full e85. That would put you around 330whp

Yeah I am thinking about running ethanol, but due to my ECU being so old and not allowing for flex-fuel tuning without Carberry, I am likely gonna wait until I make the switch to a Link standalone ECU as my tuner suggests. He said it should pickup 20-40WHP just by switching engine management and retuning, igorning the gains that are present already when switching to e85, which would add another 20-40WHP to my current setup. Probably gonna go ethanol on my current build when I switch to ID1300 injectors, add a surge tank and change to a more modern ECU. Should Make 310-340ish on the heartbreaker Mainline dyno @ Infront Automotive if all goes according to plan. Doing all this to prep for the 2.14 closed deck stroker motor (IAG Magnum shortblock) w/ EJ207 big port heads and a high redline. Gonna be running a G25-660 or EFR 7163 with that setup. EDIT: I bought a used Killer B Spoolinator kit w/ Garrett GTX3576R Gen 2 for the built motor instead of a smaller turbo because the deal was too good to pass up. Should have the motor built in the next 20 or so months. We'll see! EDIT 2: Decided to go with an IAG Magnum shortblock for the built motor setup for a variety of reasons. EDIT 3: I have since installed a TurboSmart plumb-back BPV and it holds boost significantly better between shifts. Last edited by K3rm1tth3fr0g; 04-11-2021 at 01:01 AM. |

Update 6/6/2021
Getting ready for my next dyno tune in late June and all parts are purchased. Planning to add to my little ole 205 build the following:
Aiming for ~330WHP/300WTQ on E85 and hopefully 280/280 on pump. I am opting for a surge tank and such a large pump because I plan to upgrade to a built 2.5L down the line and it should be a direct swap when the time comes. Just installed a GrimmSpeed splitter for my GR TMIC and while its better than OEM, the gaps on the side leave some room for improvement so I may be returning or reselling it. I have been in contact with GotItRex in Australia over the last little bit and they should have their shroud for the GD chassis with the GR TMIC ready by the end of June and that should be perfect for my build. A setup VERY similar to my current build (205, VF39, Walbro 255) was recently converted to a Link ECU at my tuners shop and I recently saw the dyno sheet of it making 300WHP and more impressively, 300WTQ... ON THE SAME TURBO AS ME ON PUMP GAS (I made 225WTQ). So my tuner's claim that the Link ECU can add power directly seems to be somewhat true. Update 6/16/2021 All parts are ordered and I just put in a down-payment with my tuner to order the Link ECU & its accessories. Last edited by K3rm1tth3fr0g; 06-17-2021 at 09:38 AM. |

Just curious, of the myriad of engine combos, why did you choose the 2.5 for your upcoming build?

Since my car is mainly on the street, I didn't think a 2.35 destroker was justified over a 2.5L. The low end torque of the 2.5 and lack of complicated assembly process is hard to ignore. 100% open to different opinions, but so far, a 2.5L seems to make more sense for me since if properly built it can rev to 8k, and 2.5 will spool the turbo I have set aside better than a 2.35, 2.1 or 2.0L. Well this is certainly turning into more of a log style post than I originally anticipated but I will make a new post when the car hits the dyno next so heres the last update I'll post here:
Plans have changed a lot since we have last convened - The car is getting a full STi 6-speed swap with a 1CA non-DCCD gearbox with 69K miles. This transmission has front and rear Suretrac diffs and a 4KG center viscous differential. It's a full swap minus the front hubs so I will be also running front and rear Brembos with Hawk HPS pads. Replacing the telemetry features of my Accessport when I switch to the Link ECU will be handled by 2 60mm BTi multi-gauges mounted in a JCSpods dual 60mm mount, and after some initial fitment issues, all is well. Likely the biggest change in how the car drives will be the swap over to a rebuilt 20G-XTR (10CM) that was generously donated by Dave D. All of power is going to be up top but I am hoping the ethanol helps avoid utterly atrocious spool... Plus the fact that we are going EWG with a TiAL 38mm EWG by welding a bung onto my Killer B up pipe. Flow on that 20G will be aided via a Killer B hard aluminum inlet with a silicone coupler that allows me to run this 2.4" 20G now and my 3" 3576 G2 Spoolinator kit down the line Keeping TMIC temps down as we try to go for 340+WHP will be assisted by a GotItRex splitter specifically for the GR/VA TMIC in the GD chassis. Fueling will be upgraded with the lines being swapped from a dead-head to parallel config and a single pump Radium surge tank being installed in the engine bay with a Walbro 525 inside on a separate fuel pump controller. This should make sure the Walbro 255 in the rear tank never runs out of fuel at higher RPM or when cornering, and should take some load off that pump in general. Other misc. mods will be listed at the bottom End goal is ~350WHP on my tuners very stingy Mainline dyno on VP Racing X85 with another goal being ~300WTQ on both E85 and 92 octane... We'll see how attainable these goal are - I am hoping the 20G will make this possible. Dropping the car off for the fabrication work + tune on the 28th of September. Not power related, but I got my hands on an 04 STi steering wheel I will be reconditioning and installing along with some freshly powder coated 04 STi BBS wheels. Misc Mods: Solid shifter U-joint Killer B high flow water-pump housing Wideband, oil temp, pressure, EGT, fuel pressure sensors Thermal Zero downpipe blanket PTP wastegate blanket Last edited by K3rm1tth3fr0g; 08-29-2021 at 06:21 PM. |

Compression test passed with flying colors between 163-164 on all cylinders! 10% leak down across the board.
Tuner said it was "an impressive result, they are rarely that even." |

Just picked up a DSS carbon fiber driveshaft because the unit included with my swap was a bit too rusted for my liking.
Also used some of my store credit on Import Image Racing to snag an ACT Streetlite flywheel for the 6MT swap since I am used to my ACT streetlite. Will be pairing those drive-line mods with Dom Acia's new lightened crank pulley. He designed it to be able to add a bolt on damper down the line when he finished designing it.
