Default Kyb struts with sti springs

Hi guys I’ve done some searching with no results I have 2004 aspen white wrx sedan with blown struts I started piecing together my own strut assembly I purchased kyb excel g struts part# 334358. 334359 and also purchased group n rear top hats part#BO310FE013. I also purchased 06 sti springs off a fellow member when I went to the shop to have the struts put together the mechanic said this isn’t going to work and showed me as he put the struts together a spring compressor was not needed and you could thread the nut down a few turns onto the top hat. Am I better off sticking with my stock wrx springs now I have all this money wrapped up in top hats and new struts. Any advice appreciated

Excel-g struts won't last for long with STI-rate springs = under-damped.
STI springs were designed to fit inverted struts, which are shorter than non-inverted struts.
You don't always need a spring compressor, but 20mm interference fit would be a minimum: to stop dislodging at full droop.

I ran a similar setup and I do remember needing to push the rear down just a tiny bit. However with those struts I would run stock springs. If you want to run the STI springs either get 04 STI struts, KYB AGX, Tokico D-Specs, or FEAL struts.

I believe there are upper and lower spring isolator rubbers that may take up that slack. If you are just daily driving I'd go with the stock springs, I bet you'll be happy with the new struts and top hats.

For reference I have an 03 Wagon and I wanted to use the exact same setup as you, but I know I want to hit the track several times a year and the closest track doesn't favor underdamped setups... so it was a no go for that reason.

Plenty of people running excel g and take off STi springs on WRX sedans and wagons around here for years, no problem. Excel g struts are fine for street use with take off STi springs.
