Default Reasonable cost for new engine? 2003 MY

I've got a "client" who has asked me to work up numbers on an engine replacement on an '03 Baja. This isn't exactly what I do, but as word gets out that I can do automotive work requests keep coming in, and with the economy the way it is I should take whatever work I can....

....I've got a complete shop, 2 post lift, and most common and not-so-common automotive tools. I CAN do it, it's just not how I typically advertise myself.

Anyway, what would one expect to pay a shop to have a new engine dropped in an '03 Baja, and I'd really appreciate sources for reputable rebuilds.

If you're thinking the vehicle may not be worth the expense, I don't necessarily disagree, but it has sentimental value to him.

If the suggestions are Jasper or similar, it might be best to direct him to a certified Japser installer (which I am not) to keep the warranty intact.

What exactly do you mean by a new motor?
A NEW motor or a used junkyard motor?

I would expect around $5000+ for a NEW shortblock ($1950) with reconditioned heads ($600) , new gaskets ($100+), timing kit+ water pump ($200+), clutch ($150+), oil pan ($50) plus $1000 labor.

For an 03 Baja I think a used motor probably makes more sense.

Complete junkyard motors go for 500$ CAD round here. But then again, you never really know what you're getting into with a junkyard motor.

Generally you're looking at around $3,000 for rebuilt motor from a reputable Rebuilder. And a lot of them have deals on motors they want to get out... many reputable Rebuilders are actually advertising in places like eBay but they have a brick-and-mortar shop and you can look at the reviews.

You need to be really careful a lot of Rebuilders I have found are not doing full rebuilds even though they are charging for them. And the mileage and time frame warranty is usually so superficial that they are out of the woods by the time you recognize a problem.

Installation $500 on the low-end 1200 on the high end.

You can go to car-part.com for a nationwide junkyard database and start making some calls. A good used engine with new timing belt and gaskets would be an affordable way to go. You can also find low mileage japanese units for about $600ish dollars but you have to watch out for some that have AVCS which I am pretty sure your 03 baja does not.

As mentioned above $500-$1,200 is going to about the labor rate to R&R the engine assembly and re-seal, timing kit, adjust the valves, etc..

Might as well help your buddy out and reseal the rear transmission seals, refresh the shifter linkage and put some fresh gear oil in it.

Be interested to know how it goes, good luck and cheers

The "client" probably went to another shop by now that doesn't have to ask an internet forum to create a quote for them.
