My LGT never did this, then I got an ACT clutch with an 07 WRX flywheel. Decelerating in gear from 3k RPMs and lower I get a real "crunchy" sound. From what I read on legacygt.com, it's normal, so I'm not worrying about it. Something to do with having a single mass flywheel instead of the LGT's stock dual mass flywheel.

Thx for resurfacing it or i never would have come across it.

I was like "oh man i have the exact same problem!" and started to read. I have an 06 STi and it's been making this same chatter/grinding noise when off throttle in gear ( low rev's ) and is very audible. It's been doing this ever since i got it and now 2.5 years later the gearbox is still in excellent shape.

Now i atleast have some confirmation that this is normal/very common

thx

Yep, my car and all the WRXes I've driven do this, too.

Just sending a message out to the distant corners of the internet to find out if anyone has found a fix to this issue?

List of mods to my car(some in attempt to repair the issue): sti group n motor mounts/transmission mount, tomei headers/uppipe, tomiaka downpipe, cobb catback exhaust, bc racing coilovers (in need of service), driveshaft shop lvl 0 front axles, new wheel bearings on all four corners, whiteline diff outrigger support bushings, eibach adjustable swaybars, act stage 3 6 puck clutch, stoptech rotors/pads/stainless brake lines, '14 wrx wheels/firehawk tires (these tires are the bees knees), and a few other motor things but I find them irrelevant with the issue at hand...

With all that being said, my three things that I believe could be the issue are:

1) Driveshaft carrier bearing (possibly fixed by one piece driveshaft or beatrush's propeller shaft mount bushings? I read somebody fixing their nvh by replacing these on RSD)

2) Something inside the differential (bearings, bad gear shimming, low fluid maybe?)

3) Low level of grease inside axle cv's (possibly from the fact that i've heard rumors of subaru undergreasing their cv's for whatever reason)

Please send help! I can't take girls on dates in my cool subaru if it sounds like it's a hunk of junk lol

Thanks for any help in advance

Hey thanks for resurfacing this.. I have the same problem. I just swapped an 04 STI 6 speed into my 04 WRX in combination with a new Exedy clutch and STI front axles. I had the trans gone through and rebuilt with new shift forks, new synchros, a couple new gears, new center diff plates and new bearings. So, see my notes below on what we know its NOT:

Possible - I have a used driveshaft that I don't know the condition of.

2) Something inside the differential (bearings, bad gear shimming, low fluid maybe?)
No, my front Diff was just rebuilt and my rear diff has not changed. Now I have the noise after my swap.

3) Low level of grease inside axle cv's (possibly from the fact that i've heard rumors of subaru undergreasing their cv's for whatever reason)
Maybe possible, but I just regreased my front inner CVs. My grinding sounds kind of like its from the front left, so maybe the outer? Its hard to say

I was recently having this issue on my 2013 wrx and I think the tire pressure fix actually fixed it but i'm not 100% sure I went under the car with some lube and got creative, so I don't know if it was the lube or the tire pressure fix actually worked, I put my fronts to 35psi and backs to 30, be careful because 30 is around the point where the TPS light came on for me, so I filled up the tires a little bit and the light went away

i also changed my propeller shaft bushings, I cant say for sure if that helped or not but it's something I have done recently right before the sound went away.
