I think this also depends on county. For example, in fairfax we have to get emissions, in norfolk we don't.
a lot of people i know just take it through in OEM and swap the mods back in though.

moving on...
I just passed emissions this year ( I was worried I might have issues) but I have a 2016 with a full turbo back exhaust. from turbo to cats is the cobb catted J pipe with a straight pipe that connects to the mufflers and the mufflers are the nameless 4 inch with the 4 inch double wall tips. I have been running this setup since 2016. perhaps the reason I passed was because it looks like they are not new (factory ish).... I think this is another factor for inspectors....when they see shiny new parts its low hanging fruit for a failure. |

Does anyone know if the Cobb GESi Catted DP will pass VA emissions? It's got a bunch of numbers on it, does that mean it's approved?

Yes, that does appear to have the marking required in VA.
It's the bottom series of numbers that matter. The cat in the photo is stamped with "N/GBL/3889/1018" Quote:

My new turbo back doesn’t have any of the numbers stamped on it but has all the necessary cats...will I fail inspection because I don’t have the numbers on it?

Unfortunately Payback I think it will fail. The problem is with out the stamping an inspection place has no way of knowing if it a true cat or not. My old downpipe had a 200 cell spiral cat and no markings. The dealer actually put a bore camera down it to prove that it had a cat in it. At the time about 4 years ago even then they were making sure that the cats had epa stampings.

So, there is no way I’m replacing my entire exhaust again, what are my options?

You could always add an approved high flow cat like a magnaflow into the system either down stream of your downpipe or in place of the one on your downpipe. The second option would kind of suck having to match up the correct cat length.

And just to be clear, they will catch all this during the emission test?

Not during the emissions test so much but during the visual inspection. The problem being that if the inspector is doing their job to the tee they will know that you are modified by your exhaust noise and then much like cops that is all they need to start picking you apart. Then they will visually inspect your cat and see no marking and then its over before it starts. The problem being that VA has been cracking down on performance parts in areas that do emissions inspections. I wonder if you could just travel farther south where they don't do emissions and be fine. I have no idea on that though.

Ok, so I’m screwed during that inspection. What about the VA safety inspection? Am I screwed there too?

Thats the one I was talking about since in the Hampton roads area that is all we have. Do you get a separate sticker for emissions?

No sticker for emissions. To get your tags for your plates you have to get and pass and emissions test I believe. You do get a sticker in your window for the safety inspection

I have an appointment to get inspected at Japanese Auto Masters in VA Beach next Thursday. If I fail the visual for the cat, I'll likely call All Aspects to see if they can replace the cat in my TurboXS DP with a GESI cat. Cobb ETA for the GD version of their GESI catted DP is Jan/Feb according to their website.
Anyone in the VA Beach area experience this yet? Or even recommend an inspection shop that is a tad more lenient? I know inspectors are cracking down. |

i am in the same situation. I have a cobb catted J-pipe and cob exhaust. per Dan@MachV, I will fail inspection. Can anyone mention a shop that I can get the emissions check done that is not yet fully on board w/this stuff?
My only other option is to get them to fabricate and weld in a new cat on to the Cobb J-pipe, to the tune of about $900...ugh. I did not know that I could swap back to stock--get tested--then go back to the cobb j-pipe, so i will look into that as well. |

Haven't logged in for a long time but this thread caught my attention. My motor was installed last week, I asked to keep the car catted and route the dump tube back into the exhaust as I don't want to have issues with inspections.
This is the first I've heard of inspections checking for stampings, I pulled out my invoice and thankfully the cat that was installed is a Gesi G-Sport EPA approved. $401 Glad I don't have to think about it all weekend to ask on Monday if it is EPA approved. I don't think my inspector has ever checked in the past, but that doesn't mean he wont be checking in the future. |

FWIW, I went to All Aspects in Chesapeake where Aaron and team replaced the cat in my TurboXS DP with a Kooks performance cat and it passed inspection no problem. At this same time, Cobb just released the GD version of their new GESI catted DP but I was already in with All Aspects so I went with their pipe fab. I am not upset at all since I had them do a few other things while it was in the air.
Props on their tune also, very happy with it. |

I am going to move to the Virginia Beach area from the Philadelphia area and am planning at some point to get an STI again and mod it. Will I have to worry about anything in the Virginia Beach area emissions wise or is it just northern VA from what I have read?

All vehicles in Virginia need to pass an annual "Safety Inspection" which, as far as this thread goes, includes a visual inspection of the vehicle's exhaust and emissions systems. The inspector will not do any electronic evaluation of the vehicle such as checking for existing DTC.
Reference https://www.vsp.virginia.gov/Safety.shtm Vehicles in the northern Virginia area, specifically the counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William, and Stafford and the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Manassas and Manassas Park, must also pass a biannual emissions inspection. So essentially sounds like if you are catless you basically need to "know a guy/shop", and theres only emission testing in NOVA counties? Just wondering how you catless guys are getting passed down there in VA. Here in NYC we have emissions but only by way of OBD scan. Essentially if you're protuned and have no CELs you're fine if you "know a guy/shop". |
