Otherwise, do some Searching on here or RS25.com. The impreza RS will have the same setup as that Legacy for a turbo swap. BTW, you'll love the harness swap it's heaps of fun.

2001 RS ej2.5 going in a 2002
Here's my sad tale.
looked and looked for a 2.5 RS coupe 99-2001 found 2001 mint condition with 40k miles. Bought it last feb. Always loved their look but settled for this 4 door since it was so good. Thought it would be a great backup car and for my daughter to drive to school, hopefully college too. Big surprise she was tagged in the rear in the 3 oclock 500. Nobody was hurt but big surprise totalled. So off I went on the hunt for another suby. Found a 2002 outback sedan for cheap. southern car but has oil leak and questionable motor history. I'm wanting to swap the 2001 RS ej2.5 phase II into the 2002 Outback sedan. According to all I've read they both have the ej 2.5 phase II. I've also been reading that many people have swapped the ej 2.2 into these because of head gaskets. If that has been done what issues might I face going back to the ej 2.5 ? |

Not too knowledgeable about swapping and stuff, but I recently got a 1998 2.5rs, with a EJ25D (DOHC) engine, with 160k miles. I think it is now suffering from rod knock now however. What are my options?
I am thinking of swapping engines but I am not too sure which ones fit. Can I swap from a DOHC engine to a SOHC engine? I'm not too interested in turbos or anything, but is a JDM EJ20 SOHC a valid replacement? When I look up EJ25 engines, JDM Motors says it is a replacement for the 2.5L engine but I am not sure. Which ones fit that also don't suffer from the head gasket problem that plagued a lot of the RS's? Is the last option just to rebuild the engine? Thank you. And read THIS. The main issue - i believe - w/the JDM SOHC is that the intake manifold and wiring harness won't work well w/your RS. and won't have the EGR. |

Looking for some help with doing a motor swap on my 2011 wrx
I’m new to Subaru’s and I just bought a 2011 wrx premium 2.5, and I have the active valve control on the intakes I believe. But sadly #3 cylinder is low on compression, I found a low miles EJ255 DOHC out of a 05 legacy, is anyone able to tell me if that motor will swap into my car? Are the sensors that need to be swapped, will I need to use my heads off of my motor? Or should I just look for a motor closer to my year? Thank you for any advice in advance.

Read this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subaru_EJ_engine#EJ255
The LGT 2.5 is lower compression, and probably does NOT have the air pump yours does if using the full long-block. But throw your WRX's Intake Manifold on it and it should run. I'd suggest getting a tune (open-source or Cobb) to dial it in - due to the different engine and lack of air pump. Or just use the shortblock. It'll still be slightly lower compression, and there may be a few different ports but should be covered on here.>>>>> >>>You'll NEED to do some info-gathering if you're going to tackle the swap. Otherwise, find a good local Subie shop (not a dealer - they won't do swaps) for a reference. Also, I'm not a fan of used Subaru turbo engines. I'd prefer to buy a new shortblock ~$2K and stick it under your heads after they've been R&R'd. And do a Leak-Down test (yes, $$) but it'll tell you more precisely where the Low Comp on #3 is from. |

07 2.5i to 05 STi full swap questions
So I’m in the middle of doing a complete 05 STi swap into a 07 Impreza 2.5i and I have a few questions about wiring. Most of the wiring is already in place, I have a 05 donor car so instead of getting the harness merged, I took every inch of wiring out of the 05 STi. The only wiring I haven’t gotten to yet is the fuel tank wiring and thats where I’m getting a bit confused. I read on another thread that if you swap out the fuel sending unit, you don’t need to swap out the harness for the fuel tank, but the STi R180 rear differential has the temperature sensor, but is that the only difference? Is there a plug that I could plug the rear differential wire into? Just a plug that isn’t connected on the Impreza harness? Do I need to swap the whole fuel wiring? What about the tank?

2.2 Block Substitute for a 2.5 Block?
First I apologize if I overlooked if this has been covered, I went through the conversions area and didn't see anything that applied to this. So I need two short blocks for my kids 2002 Imprezas, currently 2.5 SOHC's. I have not found any locally but there is a yard with three 2.2's and I can hear them run (huge bonus) If i take all three the yard will give me a huge break so my question is can I use the 2.2 block in place of the 2.5? I read in some other postings you can but some said you need to use a different head gasket thickness as it lowers compression. I put much more value in this group then just google answers so any guidance is greatly appreciated!!!

What year???
Assuming you're wanting to do a full swap, not a 'frankenstein build'. ;-) 2.2 won't swap in after 2004, I believe due to differences. And there are 2 'Phases' of the 2.2: 1 and 2. Make sure the 2.2s are 1999+ NOTE: The 2.2 had single-port heads on the exhaust >>2.5 is dual-port so you'll need that exhaust manifold from the 2.2. ALSO, your Intake Manifold (IM) will only fit the '99+ SOHC 2.2 and 2.5, which is why you can't use the earlier 2.2 LONGBLOCk. |

2.2 Block Substitute for a 2.5 Block?
Quote:
So would you suggest just using the whole motor and swap the manifolds? I figured they were all about the 160,000 miles so I was figuring on head gaskets that is why I figured on just swapping the heads. I don't know honestly that much about the 2.2 motors and if they have the HG issues as well or not. Another yard just hit me up they have a 2.2 as well....hope this is feasible cause I will snag as man blocks as possible lol Thanks for the fast reply too, greatly appreciated!! |

Usually the HG will be leaking externally as a 'sign' on these. If not leaking (and who knows if the Seller just powerwashed them!) if you wanted to risk then, Yes, just install 'em.
But I'd also do the HG on ANY used Subaru engine I was going to touch. I don't know enough about the 'reverse' franken engine: 2.2 block w/2.5 heads But I think you'll be down on power due to lower compression. Remember to search all the Subaru forums as these engines were used in the '99 Legacy L (NON-Outback, SUS and GT) and the Impreza. The https://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/ site has lots of info, too. And those 2.5 are the same between the Subaru models of similar years....THAT has been covered ..... a LOT. :-) The Phase 2 2.2 are nearly the same as the 2.5, AFAIK, so I'd be suspect of their HG's too....just didn't sell as many. |

I did the reverse frankenmotor out of need. I have a EJ222 (Single port exhaust)that blew timing tensioner so I replaced with JDM NA EJ20 (dual port exhaust) only to have a year later a belt bearing give out. So, I opened the EJ222 and found no bent valves but I already had received a set of 251/3 heads.
All engines/heads are phase 2 btw! So did research So, did more research and EJ222 (phase 2) heads and 251/253 heads are identical except for the exhaust port (single vs double) and cams which you can switch out if you want but difference is minimal, so I went with the 251 as I already had a header and single port ones are hard to come by (inferno fab is $$), So I have a dual port EJ222 and love it! Now to build a monster with the 2.0! |

2.2 Block Substitute for a 2.5 Block?
Leonardo, Interesting info!!!! Why they made these clearance motors is beyond me after pulling one apart and seeing how little of work it would have required!!
Good news all the 2.2 ran great so I should have them all by Wednesday for a 125 each!! So your info makes me feel pretty good as well! Sorry about the tensioner I have my bolt snap off about 20k after the re-gasketing and wasn't impressed at all. |

So I have an 05 legacy gt that blew a head gasket recently and I also have an 06 wrx. From what Ive read, they both share practically the same engine and I was wanting to swap my wrx engine into the legacy due to body issues with the impreza. Was wondering if anyone had any tips or insight on how easy or complicated a project like this might be. Thanks!

Not sure about the WRX but I had an 05 LegGT as well and though the engine was closer to the STi but without the adjustable valve timing. Shortblock components share STi numbers. Pull LegGT engine and have a gasket job done and call it a day, its a strong motor. Use the WRX as a donor car and find a GC8 or GF8 and do a whole swap. I would! Look at my insta: GF8_Orlando

Hello, 2011 wrx ej255 So I got a spun bearing and bad heads. Can I put an sti engine instead of the ej255? What is required? pcm and turbo/ intercooler? Reprogram key? Does the Sti bolt up to a 5 speed?

Ej253/ej255 hybrid
I'm just trying to get some help in figuring out if my ej253 heads will work on a ej255 block. My intention is to either turbo or supercharger the engine. I know the 255 block is but for boost enhance why I picked it plus it was free. But people say the 255 pistons won't work with the 253 heads so this as me confused.
