Default 2021 Nissan X-Terra Returns As A Navara-Based SUV With Refreshed Looks

2021 Nissan X-Terra Returns As A Navara-Based SUV With Refreshed Looks
Quote:
Nissan has just unveiled its new 2021 X-Terra SUV for the Middle East, also known as the Terra in other markets. Unlike North America’s Xterra (without a hyphen) based on the F-Alpha platform that was discontinued after the 2015MY, the three-row SUV is built around the latest 2021 Navara. Compared to the existing Terra SUV sold in other markets, the X-Terra has been thoroughly updated inside and out, although the overall shape remains unchanged.

Just to make sure there’s no confusion, this is nothing more than a facelift of the Terra, albeit quite a substantial one. The front end now resembles that of the Patrol thanks to the bold new V-motion grille design, sculpted bumper and new headlights featuring modern C-shaped DRLs.

Seven exterior colors will be made available to buyers, with the palette also including bright brown and burgundy. The interior meanwhile features premium black and light grey materials, creating a more upscale ambiance.

Speaking of the interior, the new X-Terra is now said to offer best-in-class ride comfort thanks to its Zero Gravity seats in the front and second rows, while acoustic glass on both the windshield and side windows help keep out unwanted noise.

There’s also a fully redesigned dashboard, finished in soft-touch materials. The upper section has a flat design and the center console houses a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment display. Also new are some of the SUV’s active safety capabilities, where flagship Platinum grade variants get Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Warning, Intelligent Forward Collision Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Intelligent Driver Alertness and Intelligent Emergency Braking.

Like the Navara, the X-Terra now also gets Nissan’s latest three-spoke steering wheel, to go with USB-C and USB-A slots for front and rear passengers.

As for powertrain options, there’s a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline unit, sending 165 HP and 177 lb-ft (241 Nm) of torque to all four wheels using a seven-speed automatic gearbox. Customers who need to go off-road will be happy to know that the SUV comes with four-wheel lock, a limited slip differential and an electronic locking rear differential.

Nissan’s new 2021 X-Terra SUV will go on sale in the Middle East starting next month. At this point, it’s not known when the Terra in other regions around the world will get the X-Terra’s revisions.

Oh great. Another bland, boring, vanilla SUV.

The typical person that buys a vehicle like this is 180 degrees from an enthusiast so I find it hard to believe there's a bunch of people out there as enamoured with this news unless they are on the Nissan payroll.

A four cylinder and a Seven speed AT? I didn't know Nissan allows that with everything CVT'd. If it had a V6, I would take this over the Pathfinder we get.

Boo, missed opportunity to make a decent entry level off-roader. Instead we get another milk toast Nissan SUV.

Well, at least it's body on frame. Not many of those left. They should just bring back the 2nd gen Xterra and put the 2020/2021 Frontier drivetrain/9speed in, though.

Japan's export credit agency to lend $2 billion to Nissan for U.S. sales financing
Reuters Staff
TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's state-owned export credit agency has agreed to give Nissan Motor Co up to $2 billion as part of a credit agreement to help it finance car sales in the United States.

FILE PHOTO: The logo of Nissan Motor Corp. is displayed the company's showroom in Tokyo, Japan November 11, 2020. REUTERS/Issei Kato
The money is part of a $4.1 billion credit agreement for Nissan Motor Acceptance Corporation, a unit of Nissan North America, Japan Bank of International Cooperation (JBIC) said in a press release on Wednesday.

The money should help the Japanese company sell cars in the world's second-biggest automarket after China by allowing it to provide customers with loans that they can repay in monthly instalments, the export credit agency added in the statement.

The United States "is an important market for Japanese automobile manufacturers. Sales finance has become an important tool in business strategy", JBIC said.

"This case provides financial support for Nissan's overseas business development," it added.

JBIC has provided loans for overseas sales financing to other automakers, including a $78 million October agreement with Honda Motor Co in Brazil, and one in September for Toyota Motor Corp in South Africa. JBIC did not disclose the amount for that deal.

The latest agreement with Nissan is more than three times as much as a $582 million loan extended by JBIC in July to help it finance car sales in Mexico.

A JBIC spokesman said the government export credit agency applied the same lending standards as private banks.

Nissan, Japan's third-largest automaker, is focusing on key markets as it pulls back from the rapid expansion led by ousted Chairman Carlos Ghosn.

It is looking to raise market share with new models in the United States, China and Japan as they rebound from a demand slump triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We have financing from a variety of different ways and JBIC is one of them," a Nissan spokeswoman said.

This month, Nissan cut its operating loss forecast for the year to March 2021 by 28%, albeit still to a record of about 340 billion yen ($3.2 billion), helped by a rebound in demand, particularly in China.

2021 Nissan X-Terra Debuts After A Long Absence
But it won't be coming to America.

The Nissan Xterra was discontinued in the US market after the 2015 model year. Aside from the large Armada, Nissan no longer sells a body-on-frame SUV in North America. Go elsewhere, however, and there are options, specifically the Terra SUV, which is based on the Navara midsize pickup truck. But in one region of the world, the Terra is called X-Terra (note the dash mark) and it returns after a five-year market absence.

The 2021 Nissan X-Terra, teased just a few days ago, is for the Middle East market only but it's not entirely new. It's really a facelifted Terra but it's awfully appealing. The new X-Terra is a three-row SUV with a fresh design inside and out that sets it apart from the Terra sold elsewhere.

For starters, the SUV receives new LED headlights and taillights and an updated grille featuring the brand's new V-motion design. A set of 17-inch alloy wheels are standard and 18-inch machine-cut alloys are optional. The front and rear bumpers borrow some Patrol styling elements as well. A total of seven exterior colors are available while the interior has premium black and grey colors.

Depending on trim, cloth and leather upholstery are offered. The new soft-touch instrument panel design features a nine-inch infotainment system and the HVAC controls have received a more premium look. A three-spoke steering wheel is new while the Zero Gravity front and 60/40 split-folding second-row seats provide best-in-class comfort. Third-row seats have a 50/50 split, while acoustic glass applied to the windshield and side windows makes for a quieter cabin.

Additional safety systems are now part of the package with the premium Platinum grade receiving Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Warning, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, and Intelligent Forward Collision Warning.
Under the hood lies a 2.5-liter four-cylinder rated at 165 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque paired to a seven-speed automatic transmission. Two-wheel-drive is standard and the Premium trim is 4WD only. Nissan also added four-wheel lock, a limited-slip differential, and an electronic locking rear differential. Off-road lovers will find the Hill Descent Control and Hill Start Assist Systems most helpful.

Sales in the Middle East begin next month and there's no indication yet whether the Terra SUV will receive these same updates.

Yeah, pretty horrible power plant. I’m not convinced that’s the final power plant. I mean, NOBODY will be buying the thing in the US with that pathetic amount of power...

Apparently the Prado (roughly the 4Runner equivalent) starts with a 164hp 4 cylinder in the Middle East as well. I would have thought gas was cheap and abundant there? https://www.toyota.com.sa/en/vehicles/suv/Prado

The first model year (2010) of the current gen 4Runner did come with a 4 cylinder base engine. It only lasted one model year. There apparently is a market for it in other markets.
