Default The Subaru CEL thread

Purpose: Did your Scooby throw a cel?

Help us to see what is common with subarus, every car line has problems accross the line, with the thread we can see what kind of problems subaru is experiencing, what are the most common causes of the CEL to come on on a scoobie.

So please post, your cars, year, make, model and mileage, what cel code you have gotton, the code and definition.

If it was fixed, please include what was done to rectify the the problem.

Things not to post.
If you have a high flow cat and keep getting cat efficiency codes.

this is a reference thread meant to help those who have from stock to slightly moddified vehicles.

lets see how it goes.

Thanks everyone.

Please try to use this format for posting to the log, then add your comments below the entry.

Default P0420 Cat below efficiency

P0420 - Cat. below efficiency threshold: Bank 1.
2000 Legacy OBW LTD.
61k

I have a 2000 Legacy OBW Ltd. with 61K on the clock. My car is BONE STOCK as far as the engine is concerned. I got a P0420 "Cat. below efficiency threshold: bank 1". I was told by the AutoZone clerk that this is an O2 sensor going bad and I needed to replace the sensor. I have since been told by McDade and HndaTch627 that this is really my cat going bad. Updates to come.

Tony

*Update* OK I have to fess up to being dumb. I had replaced the spark plugs before I got the code and I had used Bosch Platinum regular plugs, not the "plus 2 or 4" gimicks just regular platinum plugs. I know that I had been warned about using Bosch plugs but they were the only things available at the time. I ended up calling the stealer (Southern States) and talking to Quincy the lead Suby mechanic. I told him that I had done the 60K service and he said "You put Bosch Platinum plugs in it didn't you.". I told him I had and he told me to get them out and replace them with NGKs. I was able to find regular copper NGK "V-power" plugs that crossed to the original Champion plugs. Once I put the plugs in and drove it a couple of days the light went out but I still had it cleared by AutoZone. I have been driving it now for about a week in the fixed state with no light and much better fuel economy.

I've had that twice. I had 49k on the clock. The dealer replaced the cat. 10k miles later, I've not seen that CE light.

Now I'm getting another code, P0065. I've had 6 CE lights since Thanksgiving.

A friend had the same code on his RS a few weeks ago. Turns out that a solenoid mounted on a bracket behind the power steering resivoir. I took it apart and cleaned it, seemed to work and the light was off, but as mentioned before, its back on. I also installed a Ganzflow intake at the same time and after 120 miles, I've got yet another CE light. I'll get it scanned tomorrow and post what it is.

BTW, the Ganzflow and K&N are my only modifications to the intake/fuel system.

I recently had a P0420 (cat efficiency low, bank 1) on my 00 RS. I have a Stromung 2.25" cat-back, Borla headers, and 47K miles. The mechanic i went to (Honda and Subaru specialist) says he sees these types of codes alot in cars with high-flow exhausts and headers. A lack of heat shielding on the headers can supposedly also cause this, since the exhaust loses too much heat before getting to the cat.

I was told this will cause no harm, but the cats may not be working as well as they could.

This is a catch 22: I have a Borla/ Apexi N1, 48K miles. I have been throwing CEL's a lot lately. (don't know the code yet) I took off the header yesterday to put in STi motor mounts and ThermoTec Header wrap. The inside of the header has heavy carbon fouling. So...somehow the O2 sensor is seeing an erroneous lean condition and is over richening the mixture, which is fouling the plugs, O2 sensor, Cat.....everything.

My other thought is maybe the Borla has a high enough flow that it blows the gasses through the cat too fast to burn fully?

I'm sure the header wrap will help, but I wish I knew which wire on the O2 sensor was the sense lead so I can test it at closed loop.
Are the 00' RS O2 sensors 0-5 volt? Is STOICH 2.5 volts?
Any help is greatly appreciated!

Have either of you ever received a recall notice from Subaru for your o2 sensors or reprogram of the ECM? I had that code several times and once the dealer replaced the cat, it went away. I had the standard mid-pipe but Stromung rear box. I've also heard that that setup will throw that code frequently, but its meaningless after a while.

Oh, my pe0065 is currently off. I took apart the solenoid behind the power steering resivoir and cleaned it. Seems ok now, but I'll give it a few hundred miles before I declare it fixed.

Gee, I thought there was already a "reference thread" for CELs in the Warranty Issues & SOA Problems forum titled WRX Check Engine Light Log, started on April 5, 2001 by a moderator with, currently, 296 posts.

Great idea to Balkanize the information.

Not everyone on this board has a WRX , so spare me, further more that thread/log was started to use as ammo with SOA to get on the ball with all the CE light problems everyone was having with the 'new' wrx.

Also this thread has NOTHING to do with warranty or SOA, its is exactly as stated a log to so members can quickly find information on codes that they may have.

if I can find another full subaru line based cel log thread in this forum I will merge them.

please stick to the subject.

Ive edited some posts to be able to pick out the codes easier, please try to use this format

I argue that the WRX DOES represent the Impreza line. Subaru reports Impreza sales as an amalgam of RS, TS, Outback Sport and WRX sales. Last year Subaru reported that it sold a total of 38,226 Imprezas, of which 22,910 were WRXes (see http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/st...1869518&EDATE=). In other words, 60 percent of all Imprezas sold last year were WRXes.

However, Keep your thread for the small proportion of non-WRX Imprezas. Merely insure that the WRX CELS are reported in the long-running thread that was established for this purpose and has helped members in the past: WRX Check Engine Light Log.

Small proportion?!? 22,910 WRX's were added to our roads PREVIOUSLY occupied by Imprezas since the early 90's. There are a whole lot more non-WRX Imprezas on the roads than WRX's, and for that matter, this club was founded when there were ZERO USDM WRX cars on the road. When it comes to Imprezas, the WRX is the exception, NOT the norm, pal.

edit: I apologize for the OT posting I have shared in, but this guys false sense of exclusivity, sour attitude, and misinformation is a joke.

Well since you have reported the post for no good reason as at all
if the super mods see fit that it is not viable then so be it.

Why are you insisting on arguing, is this thread really bothering you? Dont click on it if it is. Why are you beings so apposed to a thread that is designed to help?

WRX ce lights and WRX codes have absolutly nothing to do with the rest of the subaru line, so please give it a rest.

Im politly asking you, if you have nothing to contribute to this thread that is pertinent and helpful, do not post here.

thanks

P1443 Evaporative emission control system vent control function problem

I got this one today. I have a 02 WRX Auto. Mods are exhaust, Unichip, intercooler hoses, and CAI.

Does anyone know what this means?

Thanks,

There is a soleniod that is controled by the ecu that is activated, when circusmstances are met for evaporative emmissions to be vented back into the engine.

I dont think any of your mods would affect that function. Since you do have mods, and ya know how finicky subaru is, you may want to just clear the code and see if it comes back, if it does I would take it to the dealer and have it checked.

I don't know why Torch's search on that trouble code failed to uncover the WRX Check Engine Light Log thread. A quick scan of that thread will reveal at least 30 reports of this trouble code. In most cases, including mine, the problem was resolved by sending the ECU to Subaru HQ for a reflash.

Well .....2 of the most common reasons for a non blinking CEL:

1. not tightening the gas cap
2. overfilling the tank by trying to round off the sale to some $.

Other common reasons are O2 sensor and knock sensor.

I personally had the overfill problem which I fixed with a reset.

OK...just my .02

My wife's car:

'96 Outback Auto, 2.5, 155k miles, stock

PO 400 - EGR Flow Malfunction

Has had the code for quite some time. The CEL comes on about every 50-100 miles after clearing the code. Doesn't effect driveability at all.

I got a check engine light last night but I have yet to get it pulled, I will be doing that after work today. But since were on the topic of Check Engine lights. When you pull a code don't you have to connect the two green harnesses and two black harnesses under the dash? Is that what there used for? Someone told me this and I'm not sure. The reason I ask this is cause I have both the green harness and one black harness and to black wires dangling there which seemed to go in the other black harness? I noticed when I had my dash of the other day but I have never touched them before or have ever had any codes pulled off my car before? Do you think Subaru will fix this for free, even though I have 78k miles now? Its there fault, they forgot the harness.

I'm not sure yet of what the code is but I'm pretty sure whats causing it. I just installed 2 10" subs and 2 222W amps and I already had a light weight battery. The lights dim evertime the bass hits even when going 70 mph at 3k rpm. I don't think the ignition getting enough power to fire properly.

ImprezedRS,

Connecting those wires will do nothing but make your CEL flash. On the OBDI cars (pre95) that was part of the self diagnosing computer, not on the later cars though. On your car, to the left of the steering column, on the lower side of the dash, will be a little door-type thing that flips down, that's where the OBDII port (plug in) is.

Will Subaru fix it for free? Highly doubtful...your car has too many miles to be covered under warranty, and they sometimes make people pay to pull codes on warranty fixes. Many parts stores are pulling and clearing codes for free to get people in to buy parts, check that out first.

It is probably something to do with your amp and power supply situation. Might need an Optima battery and HD alternator to keep the juice flowing. If your voltage gets below 12v, your car WON'T run, so get get it fixed ASAP, or you might be using your AAA...

Thanks outback2.5HO, yeah I doubt that Subaru would fix it, all I wanted was the black harness put back on, the one that is missing. As far as getting the code pulled I have a friend that works for a Toyota dealership that is going to do that tonight. I have never done the scanning before so I didn't know about those black and green connectors but I did know about the OBDII port though. Yeah if it is the system that is causing this then the system will go before I will change the battery. I will never put in a hevy Optima battery. I like my lightweight battery, 13.5 pds compared to the stock I think was about 38 pds. I saved as much weight as I would with a carbon fiber hood.

Well I will post the results tonight of what my code is.

Code: P0500 Vehicle speed sensor malfunction &
P1540 Vehicle speed sensor malfunction 2
2000 Impreza 2.5 Rs
Mileage: roughly 78k
Fix for problem: Havn't done it yet but need to check the wiring for my TCII and the reconections from removing the FieldsSFC-Hyper R. Its says if it is not throwing the P0720 Output speed sensor (vehicle speed sensor 2) circuit malfunction code and the speedo works to check the wring to make sure it has a 10ohm connection in the wiring from the ECU harness to the Gauge Cluster Harness. So I know it must be something in my wiring. I had him clear the codes and it has yet to throw the code again, so I tthink it was just a glitch. But I will be checking it again.

Also the OBDII reader said that the code was set off at 2250rpms and at 0mph . Thats funny since I was already in third speeding up to 60 when the Check Engine light came on.

0107, & 0113
2000 Impreza RS
(mods=full header back exhaust, cobb intake)
Possible solutions= possible changing of MAP sensors
Actual solution = my MAP sensor wire came loose and just needed to be plugged in again.

below is a cut and paste from my original thread about this.

Dammit!...My car chrew a CEL light Sat. night on my way home.

I was stuck in traffic, when I saw an opening on the right lane. I gunned it and noticed the CEL when I was about 5000 or so RPM's. Then the car started giving me lip. Instead of idling like it's supposed to, it would rev up and then rev down like if it was following the beat of a ticking clock. My MR2 used to do that when it was low on coolant or was about to overheat, but the temp guage on the RS didnt' budge.
I took the car in today to have the CEL code pulled and I got a: 0107, and 0113 code.
I've included the pics of the print out so that, anyone who knows what that means, can tell me what happened
