I have filled my sub enclosure with polyfil to help drone out how loud the sub is. The problem really stems from the lack of crossover and gain controls for the sub. With the first three bands of the equalizer at -10 the sub is still too overbearing. I have plans this weekend to install a powered crossover to help with the sub. My idea is to use it to attenuate freqs above 90Hz (only three static freqs to set as the crossover), so that I can still route some of the low-mid range to the doors.

For those savvy with car audio, the connector to the sub includes line level voltages for the front right and front left speakers (+/gnd), in addition to a +12V and GND wire. There is no REM lead (needed for the crossover), as the +12V is already switched up front. Can I hook the +12V to the REM terminal? I have found conflicting info online for what the REM signal actually is?

Crossover, was really cheap. Boss BX15 was like $20 from amazon. Typically i wouldnt take the cheap way out, but its just the low end in a noisy car (ive been driving with the crossbars on.. think im gonna take em off.. )

And G, just rereading your post. I was under the impression that the Sub got its L/R from the front speakers. You are saying setting the fade to the front lowers the SPL from the sub? And while we are in the topic, pretty sure that Crutchfield lists the fronts as 6.5"s and the rears as 5.25"s? I havent ventured to disassemble the door panels yet (even though the tech who installed the sub left the pry tool under my seat). Can anyone corroborate that?

Don't forget that down under the toilet flush spins the other way (it must be true since I saw this on the Simpsons), so they should have rear-ended the car to simulate a frontal crash in the northern hemisphere where people aren't standing upside down.

I like the way the side view mirror cover just pops right off. Makes me wonder how flimsy that cover is now. I'm going to duct tape my mirrors now.

I'm not worried though. I got the Mach 5 option which includes the Auto Jack jumping action to avoid crashes. It includes the springing sound effects that Pops Racer authorized Subaru to use in the factory stereo head unit. I just need to remember which button that is on the steering wheel. I'll put a P-touch label over the button.

Set fade heavy on the front and it reduced the subwoofer.

First oil change today and installed a F108N Fumoto valve (thanks subiTWO for the size info).

The longer Fumoto valve does not hang below the plastic cover under the engine, even with my fancy addition so +1 for the longer valve that lets you attach tubing...

Notes:

1) The factory overtightened both the filter and the drain plug.

2) I removed the fill plug next to the oil filter and then pulled the oil drain plug and let the oil drain almost completely before messing with the oil filter.

3) In my case there was no mess at the filter when I removed it (there was either no oil left in it or it is held in place by a valve) -- so definitely drain the oil completely before you touch the oil filter.

The Fumoto valve fits great -- here are some pics:

And a little "safety" cap I made with a 1/2" plug from home depot and some of the 3/8" internal diameter vinyl tubing I bought. In order to fit the plug in the tubing I needed to dip the tubing into boiling water for a few seconds, it is a tight fit! With this tubing on the fumoto it would stop an oil leak if the valve were to open somehow.

In my case when I installed the Fumoto the finger valve is on the top (engine side), which is no problem because next time I will install the drain hose, and then open the valve (no fuss, no mess).

5.3 quarts of Amsoil OEM 0W-20 later, I'll see if that has any effect on MPG's...

Im impressed how well the cabin reacted. I would bet that the "driver" side door would still open easily after that frontal impact.

Thanks for posting those pix for the Fumoto valve. How does the length of the threaded part compare to the OEM drain plug? Will their be any "overhang" in the interior of the oil pan due to the the Fumoto valve being longer? Also, how easily accessible is the drain? Do you still have to lift your car up to use the Fumoto valve or can you access it with all the wheels on the ground?

Zeeper - thanks for the pics - I will say this though, in over 6 years and 220k miles on my Titan, the Fumoto valve has been solid - not an unintended drip at all from that valve.

The few times I have taken it to get the oil changed somewhere (mainly when it was too damn cold/windy to climb under the truck and lay on the driveway), they scoffed at it but are amazed at the flow from the valve

All the cars I own and do my own maintenance on from now on get a Fumoto valve!

I didn't measure the factory drain plug side by side with the Fumoto, but looking at the factory plug the threads on the Fumoto are 1/2 as long as the factory plug (which means the factory plug sticks up into the pan, not an issue because you remove it). I would think that the Fumoto will offer full drainage of the oil pan, it is not sticking way up inside of it.

I did jack up one side -- for pics, to verify the fumoto valve was installed correctly, etc-- there is probably enough room to do an oil change now that the valve is installed without having to jack it up but it is still a squeeze (even with the sport that is a bit higher off the ground).

I don't think I could have done the first oil change without jacking it up -- removing the oil drain bolt required a wrench and a I had to push it with my foot to get it loosened.

Next time I just need to stick a tube on the valve and flick the lever. However I have a 2 ton floor jack, so bringing up one side 4-5" is not too difficult and it makes it easier to get under there so I will probably use it when I do my oil changes.

I don't plan on it leaking, and it isn't now of course, but the $1.49 I spend for a plug for that little cover I made is cheap insurance.

Great post. So you don't need to remove any plastic shields to get to the drain plug? Since the "nipple" doesn't point down, I think I'll get the F-108N from Amazon (free shipping) instead of the F-108S (short nipple). Did you get the cap where they have the tubings at Home Depot?

Default New Impreza Sport Limited

Hello All - just purchased a new 2012 Impreza Sport Limited. I have about 950 miles on it so far and have been rather disappointed in mileage. I have just skimmed the thread and it seems like the vast majority of us are experiencing the same results. I have been feathering the throttle due to break in and still my average mpg is around 26.5mpg computed by fuelly. I drive 85% highway,15% city. We are not even getting the recommended city mpg.
I also have a 2011 Outback that got good mileage right from the start. I cannot see the car actually loosening up to get the stated mpg quotes.

Positives:
-Solid handling out of the box.
-general fit and finish
-leather interior
-visibility
-interior volume/usability
-solid steering

Negatives:
-tires - a complete miss by Subaru - drove thru a parking lot ice glaze at 5mph,car was just along for the ride, completely dangerous. How can you put tires like this on an awd platform?
-fuel mileage -what is going on here!
-audio system - my old 2000 VW Jetta TDi had better guts/quality

Has anyone received any real information from their dealers as to why we are getting so poor of mileage results or are we just getting the party line about winter blends/break-in/driving habits?

Thanks to all for their posts.

Regarding your comment about the tires, there is only so much you can do on ice. Even with snow tires you will slide, and these are all seasons.

Are they low-rolling-resistance tires?

I have been wondering how the trend of gaining a the last couple of MPGs in the EPA rating through tire choice would effect real-world driving grip.

I bought mine off ebay for $28.50 including shipping (no tax). That is why I wanted a confirmed size because exchanges and ebay are not compatible most of the time.

The plastic shield does not need to be moved, there is plenty of clearance for the longer nipple so if you are buying that's the one to get -- the extra few bucks is worth the convenience of using a drain tube keeping everything clean.

In case it is not clear from the picture, it is an inch or so higher than the bottom of the plastic shield even with the extension I added, so no worries about the longer valve hitting anything.

The cap was in with air supply hoses I think -- any 1/2" cap will do -- if you buy smaller than that you will need a clamp. The 1/2" cap heat fitted to the vinyl tube isn't going anywhere.

I've driven in the snow with them and the OEM tires are not bad. On ice you probably need snow tires, but untreated ice is best avoided, even with snow tires.

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....odel=AVID+S34D

The tires the Sport models, and possibly others, run on. Tire Rack review show it as a terrible tire, but I haven't experienced that yet. I'm surprised Subaru put a 320 treadwear, V speed rated tire on a fuel efficient car! It seems like a very "sporty" tire for a car they are advertising as a fuel sipper. I like it, even though the tires cost a lot to replace ($220 a tire installed!).

I will be going into a Manhattan tomorrow and it is supposed to be slushy. I will see first-hand how these tires do tomorrow.
