ASK ABOUT NEW RCE
SWAY BARS FOR STI

Default The "Will this suspension part fit my car?" thread.

This is a work in progress and took me a little while as it is, but I think it's a pretty decent start on finally making an all encompassing "fitment" thread. I tried to make it as easy to go through as possible while still covering everthing. It's still a little confusing. Blame that on Subaru, not me.

PLEASE if you notice I'm missing something, don't flame me.....just let me know! I'll change/add it as soon as I can. And yes, please double check my work.

I may rearrange the organization, but for the time being i'm focusing on content.

Struts

The following have a specific fitment for 02-03 WRX and RS, and all of the following spring and strut top fitment with these is the same as it is for the stock struts.

1. KYB AGX
2. KYB GR2
3. Koni Inserts (not a complete strut, see here for install http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1219607)
4. Tokico HP
5. Tokico D-SPEC
6. STi/SPT Version 7

To use OEM or aftermarket struts that have a specific fitment for 04-07 RS, WRX, or 04 STi, you must use 04+ style rear strut tops and 04+ springs.

05+ STi struts will not fit.

Wagons are different, see notes below.

Springs

Springs for 02-03 Impreza RS or WRX will fit.

Springs designed for 04+ Impreza will fit on your 02-03 Impreza struts or 02-03 aftermarket struts, but you must use 04+ rear strut top mounts and the Scooby921 strut spacer. Details on why the spacer is needed available here:
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=563382

Scooby921 Strut Spacer available here:
http://turninconcepts10.chainreactio...5e77d30c577da7

Aftermarket springs designed for Impreza STi will be too stiff for stock struts. OEM STi springs work well though.

You can use 04+ springs with 04-07 RS, WRX and 04 STi struts. You must then use 04+ style rear top mounts.

Strut tops and Camber Plates

All 02+ RS, WRX, and STi front strut top mounts and front camber plates will fit the front.

02-03 rear strut tops fit the rear only with 02-03 springs.

04+ style rear strut top mounts require 04+ style springs.

2002-2007 2.5RS, TS, and 2.5i strut tops are softer then both WRX and STi strut tops (which are the same stiffness). confirmed?

WRX and STi strut tops are the same stiffness. STi strut tops are NOT Group N strut top mounts, which are even stiffer.

Camber bolts

All 02-07 Impreza RS, WRX and STi camber bolts are interchangeable and 14mm.

Strut Bars

Front and rear strut bars from any 02-07 RS, WRX, and STi will fit.

Coilovers

Any complete coilover for 02-07 RS, WRX and 04 STi will fit.

05+ STi coilovers will not fit.

Swaybars and Swaybar mounts/bushings

All rear swaybars for any 02-07 RS and WRX will fit. STi rear swaybars will mount on the outside of the endlinks and their effectiveness is reduced.

04+ RS, WRX, and STi rear swaybar bushings will not fit 02-03 swaybar mounts.

04+ RS, WRX, and STi rear swaybar mounts will fit and are an upgrade but require 04+ swaybar bushings.

Front swaybars for 02-07 WRX will fit, except on RS models.

02-07 Impreza RS require a specific sway bar to clear the non-turbo headers. WRX and STi front swaybars will not fit an RS.

Endlinks

Wagons require wagon specific front endlinks.

Front endlinks from any sedan 02-07 RS, WRX, or STi will fit the sedan.

Rear endlinks from any 02-07 RS and WRX will fit sedan and wagon. STi rear endlinks will not fit.

Other

All rear lateral links and trailing arms for 02-07 RS and WRX, and 04 STi will fit, except from a wagon. Rear Lateral Links from a STi will require rear STi endlinks and STi rear swaybar. Also see notes on wagon differences.

All front control arms for 02-07 RS, WRX and STi will fit. See notes on wagon differences.

All Anti-lift kits for 02-07 WRX and STi will fit.

Fender Braces do not fit non-turbo models.

WRX Wagon, OBS and 2.5 TS Wagon Differences

Struts

Struts are specific to the Wagon. While sedan OEM and aftermarket struts and coilovers will fit, you will lose negative camber.

This can be corrected with camber bolts and/or camber plates.

The only upgraded struts that retains stock camber numbers are KYB GR2s and Koni inserts in gutted OEM wagon struts.

Springs

Using sedan springs on a wagon often results in a saggy rear end. Prodrive WRX springs are a notable exception. Wagon specific versions are available from a few manufacturers.

Swaybars

Wagon front swaybars are shorter then sedan and require a specific wagon fitment. Sedan bars have been used successfully in certain cases with certain endlinks.

Endlinks

Wagons require wagon specific front endlinks, unless you swap to sedan front control arms.

Other

Front control arms are different. Upgrading to sedan control arms gives you a wider track. It allows you to run sedan front swaybars, of which there are more choices. It also allows you to run sedan struts without losing negative camber, or you can keep your wagon struts and gain negative camber. You will be required to use a sedan front swaybar and sedan front endlinks. It is recommended to use sedan front axles as well, but not required.

Rear lateral links are different. Switching to sedan lateral links requires switching to sedan rear axles.

Front and rear strut bars from any 02-06 RS, WRX, and STi will fit.

Front strut bars for 02-05 Impreza fit the 06-07 WRX but with some difficulty regarding the AC lines. There are a few 06-07 specific front strut bars.

Coilovers

Any complete coilover for 02-07 RS, WRX and 04 STi will fit.

05+ STi coilovers will not fit.

All Anti-lift kits for 02-07 WRX and STi will fit.

Fender Braces do not fit non-turbo models.

2006 Impreza and 2005-2007 Impreza STi use the same steering rack bushings. All other applications will not fit.

Struts

STi Version 8 OEM or STi Version 8 Arai Pink Struts and Ohlins Fixed Perch Struts (for 04 STI) are the only direct replacement struts for 2004 STi.

*There is now a KYB GR2 strut available in 04 STI fitment.

Koni Inserts have a 04 WRX fitment; however they will not fit in 2004 STi strut bodies due to the inverted design of the STi struts. They can be fitted to any 02-07 Impreza WRX or RS strut body. Fitting them to wagon strut bodies will result in extra negative camber. This assembly will fit a 2004 STi without issue. See here for install http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1219607

The following OEM and aftermarket struts for 02-03 Impreza can work in 2 ways.

1. KYB AGX

See strut section above for spring fitment when using 02-03 struts.

Strut tops and Camber Plates

All 02+ RS, WRX, and STi front strut top mounts and front camber plates will fit the front.

02-03 rear strut tops fit the rear only with 02-03 springs.

04+ style rear strut top mounts require 04+ style springs.

Swaybars and Swaybar mounts/bushings

All rear swaybars from any 04-07 STi will fit. WRX rear sway bars will not fit.

Front swaybars for 02-07 WRX sedan will fit.

Front swaybars for 02-07 Impreza RS will not fit.

Front swaybars for 02-07 Impreza Wagon will not fit.

Endlinks

Front endlinks from any sedan 02-07 RS, WRX, or STi will fit the sedan.

Front endlinks from any 02-07 wagon will not fit.

Rear endlinks from any 04-07 STi will fit.

Rear endlinks from any 02-07 WRX or RS will not fit.

Other

All rear lateral links and trailing arms for 02-07 RS and WRX, and 04 STi will fit, except from a wagon. Rear Lateral Links from a WRX will require rear WRX endlinks and WRX rear swaybar.

All front control arms for 02-07 RS, WRX and STi will fit, except from a wagon. Control arms are aluminum for STi and have greater caster, except in 07 which have the same amount of caster as the WRX.

All Anti-lift kits for 02-07 WRX and STi will fit.

It's best to use 93-01 specific springs.

04+ Impreza springs will not fit.

I think this would be more helpful if it was broken out by car. Example: Right now post 2 is "2002-2003 WRX, WRX Wagon, 2.5RS, 2.5 TS Wagon, Outback Sport" but I think it would be easier if it was just "2002-2003 WRX Sedan" Its more work for you, but a lot easier for people to follow.

Also, KYB GR2 is available in 02-03 Wagon fittment.

Sweeeeeeet, thanks. I guess just PM me stuff (on this name, not racecomp, it'll be easier for me) or post them here and i'll add/edit as needed.

uknuck gave me a bunch of stuff to go through, and i need to edit some nomenclature and make things a little easier to follow.

Also, KYB GR2 is available in 02-03 Wagon fittment.

Are you sure? I thought the KYB GR2 wagon fitment was essentially just the GC8 fronts and standard WRX rears, but i could be wrong and have no idea what i'm talking about. Anyone?

And yeah, that would be easier if i broke it up more. I'll probably rearrange it a little to make it simpler.

That's the case for the AGX but for the GR2 they list the following

2002-03 Station Wagon
Right Hand 334300 334302
Left Hand 334301 334303

which are different from both the 93-01 Impreza and 2002-03 sedan P/Ns. Catalog here.

As a wagon owner, I thought it would be much more intuitive have each post segregated instead of adding in a Wagon Differences part near the bottom of a particular post. Let's take post #2 for example....I think it would be much easier to have that individual post separated into two sections based on the body style. Please see example below:

2002-2003 WRX, 2.5RS

It seems like all parts will fit the sedan version of the Impreza so nothing special will be listed here. Like normal, I think it would be cool to list all of the sub-categories:
Struts
Springs
Tops
Coilovers
Strutbars
Swaybars

2002-2003 WRX Wagon, 2.5 TS, Outback Sport

Same as above but only as it pertains to the wagon body:
Struts
Springs
Tops
Coilovers
Strutbars
Swaybars

From what I gather, there are a couple parts that require some modification for them to fit on the wagon. If a certain strut will work on the wagon, perhaps you can actually list it and add in a special note suggesting that modification might be necessary. Example:

Tokiko D-Spec (modification required to and perhaps a link to a thread showing the modification instructions)

I was looking over this information and it seemed a little dense; especially after having to scroll up and down repeatedly to reference the wagon differences section.....and I've had Imprezas off and on since 03! Imagine how helpful this type of organization would help someone new to the community.
Now, this suggestion isn't necessarily about the content that you're posting but I think the presentation of should be just as important and what's posted up.

Tony

Edit: let me know if you want me to change the font since it looks a bit distracting from the original couple of posts.

Once i get all the information in, i'll come up with a better organization scheme. I definitely should list all the subcategories...good call.

is there a thread that goes into detail on the scooby921 spacer with pics etc?

Now that I own a 99Rs, I feel left out. Any plans on making a listing for them?

Added some notes on lateral links + endlinks, strut tops, and a few other content things. Added some clarification on certain parts. Rearranged things a little to make them a little less confusing. Tried to further separate the wagon sections. Still focusing mostly on content for now, but also taking suggestions on organization. Need to add some more notes on camber bolts. Subaru did their best to make this as confusing as possible.

Starting GC8 section.

Andrew,
Based on what I was able to cobble together from folks on here, STi takeoffs were okay on our WRX struts. They have the same comparable spring rates to WRX pinks (Pinks are 223/195) and ride a few MM taller than the Pinks do (not a bad thing IMO). They were at the threshold however and anything more taut (or lower) would kill the Struts.
I know you are a suspension guru (its your bidness) so I am not voicing this for dissension, but for feedback.
Thoughts?

That is true....I meant to say aftermarket STi springs will be too stiff. The OEM STi springs work well. Editing now.
